India is on the rise with 222% growth in open access solar installations: Mercom India Report

India adds 1.2 GW open access solar capacity in 2021

According to Mercom India Research’s newly released report titled “Mercom India Solar Open Access Market Report Q4 & Annual 2021,” India has added 1.2 Giga Watts (GW) of new solar open access capacity in the calendar year (CY) 2021, marking a growth of 222% during the year.
As of December 2021, the cumulative installed solar capacity in the open access market was over 5 GW, whereas in the year 2020, India had an installed open access solar capacity of 383 Mega Watts (MW), which shows that there is a growth in the demand for open access solar installations.
The top 3 states in installation of open access solar capacities of the CY 2021 are Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra respectively.
Key Facts:
i. India added 298 MW of solar operations capacity in Q4 2021 and installations were 75% more compared to 2020.
ii. Uttar Pradesh had the maximum installations with 113 MW and accounted for 38% of the total capacity additions in Q4 2021.

Union MoS Jitendra Singh Releases India’s Arctic Policy in DelhiUnion Minister Jitendra Singh releases India’s Arctic Policy in DelhiUnion Minister of State (MoS) for Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh released India’s Arctic policy titled ‘India and the Arctic: building a partnership for sustainable development’ in New Delhi.India is one of 13 nations holding Observer status in the Arctic Council.

  • It is available on the website of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) at https://www.moes.gov.in.
  • Thirteen Non-arctic States have been approved as Observers to the Arctic Council.They are France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, China, Poland, India, Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Singapore.

Objective: 
i.To promote the agenda of strengthening national capabilities and competencies in science and environmental protection, maritime and economic cooperation with the Arctic region.
ii.To enhance understanding of the impact of climate change in the Arctic and deepen India’s participation in  climate, economic, and energy security related issues. It studies linkages between polar regions and the Himalayas.

2nd India-Indonesia Security Dialogue held in Jakarta, IndonesiaIndia-Indonesia hold second security dialogue in Jakarta

On 17th March 2022, the second India-Indonesia Security Dialogue (IISD) was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The 2nd IISD was co-chaired by Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser (NSA) of India and Mohammad Mahfud, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of Indonesia. 

  • Both have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Security Dialogue between the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia and the National Security Council Secretariat of India.

IISD: 
The IISD is a forum that brings together the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia and the National Security Adviser of India to discuss and enhance cooperation between the two countries on political and security issues.
Key Points:
i.At the 2nd IISD, Mohammad Mahfud and Ajit Doval discussed several shared priorities between both countries, which included a review of the current global and security issues, countering terrorism and violent extremism, and enhancing maritime, defence, and cyber security cooperation.
ii.They also recognised the importance of traditional friendly relationships and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia.
iii.This IISD will support strengthening cooperation between both countries and will help to overcome the common challenges and identify opportunities for close collaboration in the field of political and security issues.

The first IISD, held in 2018 in New Delhi, Delhi, was led by Ajit Doval, NSA of India and  H Wiranto Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of Indonesia. 
The 1st IISD agreed on operational cooperation in security and counter-terrorism.

Defence Minister inaugurates DRDO’s Flight Control System Integration complex in Bengaluru

The Union Defence minister, Rajnath Singh inaugurated a new Flight Control System (FCS) integration complex at the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru Karnataka.  

  • The seven storey FCS Integration  building was constructed by  Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with the help of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in an area of 1.3 lakh square feet with the record of 45 days in Bengaluru,Karnataka.
  •  It will be used as the research and development (R&D) activities to develop the avionics for fighter aircraft and FCS for the fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

What is Avionics? 
A  category of electronic systems and equipment specifically designed for use in aviation.
Key points:
i.The in-house developed hybrid technology used by DRDO for the construction of FCS Complex at the ADE.

  • Hybrid  technology consisted  of conventional, pre-engineered and precast methodology 

ii.The foundation stone for the project was laid on 22 November ,2021, and the construction began on 1 February , 2022. 
iii.It was built as per the standard national building code, the technical support was provided by teams from IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras & IIT Roorkee.
Related information:
India and France are planning to sign a deal for the joint development of a 125 KN engine for the indigenous fifth generation AMCA project.

  • The collaboration is between DRDO  and French engine maker Safran.

Progressive Reduction of MMR in India: Kerala Outperforms India’s Achievement in Reducing MMRKerala’s MMR drops from 42 to 30

The Registrar General of India has released a Sample Registration System (SRS) special bulletin on Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) for 2017–2019. India’s MMR has reduced to 103, a decrease of 10 points, when compared to the previous data of 113 in 2016–2018, a decline of about 8.8%.
i.Since India is showing a persistent decline in MMR from 130 in 2014–2016, 122 in 2015–17, 113 in 2016–18, and 103 in 2017–19, it will soon achieve the below 

  • National Health Policy (NHP) target for MMR of 100/lakh live births by 2020.
  • United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target for MMR of 70/lakh live births by 2030.

ii.Kerala has recorded the lowest MMR of 30/lakh live births when compared to India’s MMR of 103, putting it far ahead of the nation.
iii.Three states such as Kerala, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have shown a remarkable decline of more than 15% in their MMR.
iv.Four states namely West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh have shown an increase in MMR.

HAL & Safran sign to set up Helicopter Engines MRO Facility in GoaHAL, Safran to set up Helicopter engines MRO facility in Goa

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines(Safran) are set to establish a new facility of Helicopter Engines MRO Pvt Limited (HE-MRO), a Joint Venture of HAL and Safran at Sattari, North Goa, Goa. 

HE-MRO Facility:
i.HE-MRO will be operational by the end of 2023 with a capacity to repair 50 engines a year and the full-capacity goal of 150 engines in upcoming years. 
ii.The facility has an expansion capacity for other engines in the future.
iii.The world-class MRO Centre of HE-MRO will provide MRO services for Safran TM333 and HAL Shakti engines installed on HAL-built helicopters to increase the operational readiness of the Indian Armed Forces.
iv.This centre will play a major role in building customer satisfaction and supporting the Government of India’s vision for aerospace MRO in India.
HAL & Safran signed MoU:
HAL and Safran have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) to extend their cooperation and explore opportunities for new helicopter engines in civil and military markets. 
Signatories:
The MoU was signed by Florent Chauvancy, Executive Vice-President, OEM Sales & Marketing of Safran and Amitabh Bhatt, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of  HAL.
About the MoU:
i.The MoU is in line with the commitment of the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision towards achieving self-reliance in defence technologies and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul).
ii.The MoU will also focus to strengthen the partnership between Safran and HAL directly or through such joint venture on future helicopter engine technologies and platforms. 
Additional info:
i.Shakti, the Indian variant of the Safran Ardiden 1H1 co-developed with HAL, is installed on HAL’s Dhruv and Rudra. 
ii.It has also been selected to power the HAL-designed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH).
iii.The Ardiden 1U variant powers the new Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), a three-ton single-engine aircraft
iv.The engine was certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation(DGCA) (India) on 26th July 2021.
Note:
Indian armed forces are one of the largest operators of Safran designed helicopter engines, with more than 1000 engines, including 250 TM333 and over 500 Shakti.

HSL, Eker Group, And Vaan Moto Collaborate to Build Speed BoatsHSL inks MoU with Eker Group, Vaanmoto to build speed boats

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has signed a tripartite agreement to produce speed boats with Eker Group of Norway and Vaan Moto of Kerala in order to explore new opportunities in the field of high-speed boat production and accelerate business growth.
i.The trio has entered into this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build speed boats in India as part of India’s AtmaNirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to make the country self-sufficient.
ii.Under this MoU, high-end boats are to be built with smart, flexible solutions with superior maneuverability that can be operated from shore up to a maximum speed of 75 knots. Additionally, it has a complement of four crew and four passengers and is equipped with navigation and communication gadgets.
iii.These platforms can easily adapt to the roles of Search and Rescue, surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Mine Countermeasures, ambulance, fire, harbour control and close protection.

NMDC signs MoU with IIT Kharagpur for Drone-Based Mineral ExplorationNMDC signs MoU with IIT Kharagpur for Drone-Based Mineral ExplorationIndia’s largest iron ore manufacturer National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) Limited has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Drone-Based Mineral Exploration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.
This partnership will produce spectral products, methodologies, and algorithms for mining exploration employing drones (UAVs), which will lead to the development of software spectral tools for mineral excavation and mining technology capacity-building programmes.
 Key Points:
i.NMDC has been exploring a wide range of minerals, including the minerals mentioned under the United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources (UNFC).
ii.With this collaboration, NMDC will become India’s first Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) to perform Drone-based Geophysical Surveys and Hyperspectral Studies for Mineral Exploration, setting a new standard in the field of mineral exploration.
iii. NMDC is exploring for various minerals in Madhya Pradesh as well as diamonds in the Beloda – Belmundi block in Chhattisgarh. It is also the first CPSE in the Central Indian Diamond Province to use space geophysics, as well as the first to use online monitoring of data exploration on the BHUVAN platform.
iv.By launching a policy on drones, the Indian government has taken the first step in regulating and monitoring drone usage and operations in India, where they are now employed in agriculture, urban planning, forestry, mining, disaster management, surveillance, and transportation, among other industries.

UN World Happiness Report 2022: India Ranks 136 out of 146; Finland TopsFinland named world's happiest country for fifth straight year
As per the 10th United Nations’ World Happiness Report 2022, India’s rank has been improved by 3 spots to 136 out of 146 countries from 139 in 2021 with a score of 3.777.

  • For the 5th year in a row, Finland continues to occupy the top spot being the happiest country in the world.
  • Afghanistan was ranked as the unhappiest nation, followed by Lebanon, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Botswana.

Moody’s Lowers India’s Growth Projection for 2022 to 9.1%, 2023 to 5.4%Moody's slashes 2022 India growth estimate to 9-1% on lower capexAs per the Global Macro Outlook 2022-23 report of Moody’s Investors Service, it has lowered India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth forecast for 2022 by 0.4 percent to 9.1 percent from its earlier projection of 9.5 percent.

  • The growth forecast for 2023 was also lowered to 5.4 percent from the prior estimation of 5.5 percent.

Key Points:
i.The year-end inflation for India has been projected at 6.6 percent in 2022.
ii.The Indian economy grew 8.2 percent in 2021, after a contraction of 6.7 percent in 2020.
iii.G20 Economies’ Growth: Moody’s has also lowered G20 economies’ growth forecast to 3.6 percent in 2022 compared to an earlier estimation of 4.3 percent (in February) and the growth forecast for 2023 is projected at 3 percent.
iv.Moody’s ratings for India is currently Baa3 Stable.
Cause for lowering the growth projection:
i.Due to increased fuel and fertiliser imports, which could limit the Indian government’s capital expenditure.
ii.Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has modified the global economic backdrop, creates risks of damagingly high input costs and consumer inflation over a period due to increasing commodity prices driven by existing and expected supply shortages.
iii.The financial and business disruptions and rise in economic costs due to increased security and geopolitical risks.

Prof Narayan Pradhan Selected for 31st GD Birla Award for Scientific Research Narayan Pradhan selected for GD Birla Award for Scientific Research

Professor Narayan Pradhan was selected for the 31st GD (Ghanshyam Das ) Birla Award for Scientific Research 2022 for his outstanding contribution in the field of material sciences. It was given by the KK Birla foundation.

  • Narayan Pradhan provided his expertise in crystal modulations to help design new shapes of  tiny lighting materials.
  • In 2021, Professor Suman Chakraborty, a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur was  selected for the 30th GD Birla Award for Scientific Research.

Highlights:
i.The research was mainly focused on understanding the chemistry and physics of light-emitting semiconductor nanocrystals.
ii.The  research group contributed to the surface construction of the newly emerged light-emitting halide perovskite nanocrystals, which are expected to be the next-generation lighting materia for photovoltaics and making LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes).

i.Educational background- He graduated from Odisha’s Fakir Mohan College and obtained a  master’s degree in chemistry from the Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, Odisha.

Miss World 2021: Poland’s Karolina Bielawska won 70th Edition of Miss World Poland's Karolina Bielawska wins Miss World 2021

Karolina Bielawska from Poland has won the 70th edition of the Miss World (Miss World 2021) pageant that was held in Coca-Cola Music Hall, San Juan, Puerto Rico. 
She was crowned Miss World 2021 by 69th Miss World (Miss World 2019), Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica. 

  • She is the 2nd woman from Poland to win the Miss World Title. Aneta Kreglicka, Miss World 1989, was the first. 

Indian-American Shree Saini who represented the United States of America(USA) in the pageant, is the 1st runner up at the Miss World 2021 followed by Olivia Yace of Côte d’Ivoire, 2nd runner up.

ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS  

ICICI Bank, Punjab & Sind to pick up stakes in bad bank NARCL

ICICI Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank have signed agreements to pick up stakes in National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL).

  • ICICI Bank will be investing Rs 137.5 crore to acquire a 5% stake,and
    • Punjab & Sind Bank will put in Rs 55 crore for a 2% stake.

The equity investment will be done in tranches, and the 1st investment of Rs 28.18 crore is expected to be completed by 31st March 2022 and the final investment will be done to ensure prompt resolution, including recovery of NPA (non-performing assets) accounts.

American born golfer, Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods has been inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame 2022 which located in United States. He has won 82 all-time Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) TOUR, also Tiger Woods is tied with Sam Snead for the most wins in PGA TOUR history. Woods has also won 18 Major (PRO) championships. Woods accomplished the “Tiger Slam” in 2000-’01, he also is a two-time winner of THE PLAYERS Championship (2001, 2013) and became the first two-time winner of the FedExCup (2007, 2009). He has also won 7 consecutive PGA TOUR wins (2006-2007).
i.Susie Maxwell Berning, Tim Finchem, the late Marion Hollins and Tiger Woods were the inductees of World Golf Hall of Fame 2022.

Finance Minister Of Tamil Nadu Palanivel Thiaga Rajan Presented The Budget For FY 2022-23Tamil Nadu Budget 2022-23 Education, state’s new gold standard

The Finance Minister (FM) of Tamil Nadu (TN), Palanivel Thiaga Rajan presented the budget for Financial Year (FY) 2022-23. The state slashed the revenue deficit by over Rs 7,000 crore in 2022-2023 and the fiscal deficit will decline from 4.61 per cent to 3.80 per cent. 
i.The budget focused on education and agricultural sectors.
Debts, Revenue Expenditure and Receipts:
i.The projected total outstanding debt of the government as of March 31, 2023 is set to be Rs 6,53,348.73 crore (within the limits set by the 15th Central Finance Commission).
ii.Total revenue expenditure in the revised estimates (RE) 2021-22 has been estimated at Rs 2,59,150.97 crore as against budget estimates (BE) of Rs 2,61,188.57 crore.
iii.The total revenue receipts including the central transfers, are estimated to be Rs 231,407.28 crore in budget 2022-23.  
iv.The state’s Own Tax Revenue (SOTR) is estimated to be Rs 142,799.93 crore for 2022-23.
v.The revenue growth of the value added tax (VAT) has not been achieved since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act.
Schemes And Implementations:
i.The Government has allocated Rs 5,157.56 crore to provide free electricity to all farmers across the state.
ii.With the allocation of Rs 698 crore, the government provides a monthly incentive of Rs 1000  for college education of girl students who studied classes from 6 to 12 in government schools.
iii. ‘Thalikku Thangam’ scheme, which provided gold and financial assistance for women’s marriages, has been reshaped into a Higher Education Assurance Scheme.
iv.Rs 7,000 crore will be used to modernise government schools over five years.
Other Schemes:
i.With a budget of Rs 15.32 crore with Union and State Government fund, Sustainable Cotton Cultivation Mission is implemented to enhance the Cotton yield during the year 2022-23.
ii.The government has allocated Rs 33,007.68 crore to the Agriculture department for the year 2022-23.
iii.Measures to increase soybean cultivation in Tanjore, Salem, Tiruvallur, Nellai and Villupuram districts of the state.
iv.The government will also allocate Rs 5 crore as additional 20 percent of subsidy to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) farmers.
