PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates 2nd ICGH-2024 to Make India Global Hub for Green Hydrogen
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the 2nd edition of the International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH-2024) in New Delhi, Delhi, unveiling India’s comprehensive strategy to become a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of Green Hydrogen (GH).
- The event brought together key stakeholders in the green energy sector, underscoring India’s commitment to combating climate change and transitioning towards a cleaner energy future.
Note: GH has the potential to decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors like refineries, fertilisers, steel, and heavy-duty transportation.
Event Organisers and Partners:
i.The 2nd ICGH 2024 was organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India (GoI), in association with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST)
ii.The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and EY are the implementation and knowledge partners, respectively.
iii.Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) is the industry partner.
National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM):
i.The GoI launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in 2023 to make India a global hub for the production, use, and export of GH and its derivatives.
ii.NGHM leads to significant decarbonisation of the economy, reduces dependence on fossil fuel imports, attracts investment in the GH sector, etc.
iii.India has declared the goal to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZEs) by 2070, and GH is expected to play a key role in this effort.
Few Expected Outcomes of NGHM:
i.NGHM will build capabilities to produce at least 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of GH per annum by 2030, with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 Gigawatt (GW) in India.
ii.The targets by 2030 are likely to bring in over Rs. 8 lakh crore investments and create over 6 lakh jobs.
iii.Nearly 50 MMT per annum of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are expected to be prevented by 2030.
iv.It will also significantly reduce reliance on imported Natural Gas (NG) and Ammonia (NH3), with a cumulative reduction in fossil fuel imports over Rs. 1 lakh crore.
Note: India also aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. Hydrogen demand in India is projected to grow significantly, with plans to reach 29 MMT per annum by 2050.
India’s Renewable Energy Achievements:
i.India is the only Group of Twenty (G20) nation to have met its climate targets under the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule.
ii.India’s Non-Fossil Fuel (NFF) capacity increased by nearly 300% over the last decade
iii.India’s solar energy capacity grew by 3000% in the same period.
Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh Launched Several New Initiatives at the 4th Anniversary of PMMSY
On 11th September 2024, Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying (MoFAH&D) launched and unveiled several new initiatives and projects aimed to boost the fisheries sector and strengthen India’s blue economy at the 4th anniversary of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.
- During the event, he announced that Government of India (GoI) is working to increase the seafood exports to Rs 1lakh crore annually from around Rs 60,000 crore ( recorded in FY24)
Key Points:
i.Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh launched National Fisheries Development Program (NFDP) Portal which will act as a central hub for registry of various stakeholders from fisheries sector, information services, and support related to fisheries.
- He also released the operational guidelines for Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY).
ii.He also unveiled the guidelines for development of 100 coastal villages across coastal states and UTs into Climate Resilient Coastal Fisherman Villages (CRCFVs).

Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu inaugurates 2nd Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation in New Delhi
India hosted the 2nd Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation (APMC) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Delhi from 11th to 12th September, 2024. It was inaugurated by the Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), India. The two-day conference was organised by the MoCA, Government of India (GoI) in partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
i.Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, MoCA was unanimously elected as the chairman of APMC at the 2nd APMC. He was nominated by Singapore and supported by Bhutan.
ii.On 12th September 2024, The Draft Asia Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Civil Aviation (Delhi Declaration) was unanimously adopted at the 2nd APMC in the presence of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Delhi.

NHA & IIT Kanpur Signed MoU To Develop Digital Public Goods For AI in Healthcare
The National Health Authority (NHA) and Indian Institutes of Technology Kanpur (IITK), Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a digital public goods for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector.
Signatories: The MoU was signed by L S Changsan, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NHA and Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur in the presence of Apurva Chandra, Secretary of MoHFW.
About MoU:
i.Under this MoU, IIT Kanpur will develop a quality-preserving database, an open platform for comparing and validating AI models, a consent management system for research under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), and also develops a learning platform across a variety of machine learning model pipelines.
ii.The platform will be operated and governed by NHA, thereby revealing the AI’s potential for improving healthcare outcomes.
- It will provide benefits which include trustworthy models, improved data access and statistical quality preservation.
iii.This partnership helps the researchers to access the high-quality data and to collaborate with other health ecosystem players.
iv.It will also accelerate the development of AI-powered health solutions that address critical health issues.

On 12th September 2024, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), launched the Rangeen Machhli mobile app at Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
- It is developed by ICAR-CIFA with support from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
- The app will support the ornamental fisheries sector by providing vital knowledge resources to hobbyists, aquarium shop owners, and fish farmers.

About Rangeen Machhli App:
i.It provides multilingual information on popular ornamental fish in 8 Indian languages featuring educational modules for beginners and professionals in the ornamental fish industry.
- Basics of Aquarium Care module covers topics like aquarium types, fish, water filtration, lighting, feeding, and daily maintenance.
- Ornamental Aquaculture module focuses on breeding and rearing ornamental fish.
ii.It offers detailed guidance on fish care, breeding, and maintenance for hobbyists and farmers.
iii.The app also includes a Find Aquarium Shops tool with a dynamic directory updated by shop owners.
iv.It promotes local businesses by connecting users with reliable sources of ornamental fish and products.
SHS 2024 Campaign to be Held under the theme “Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata” from 17 Sep – 2nd Oct 2024
Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)-2024 , the annual National Social Mobilization Campaign, with the theme “Swabhav Swachhata- Sanskaar Swachhata”, is being observed from 17th September to 2nd October 2024.
The campaign is being jointly organised by the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS), and Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
- The theme of the SHS 2024 is promoting cleanliness as a daily habit. The objective of SHS 2024 is to facilitate large-scale advocacy and citizen participation in mega cleanliness drives, the clearing of dirty and difficult garbage spots (black spots), and sanitation worker recognition.
- The 3 key pillars of the 4S campaign are, Swachhata Ki Bhaagidari (Public participation and awareness in cleanliness), Sampoorna Swachhata (Mega cleanliness drives and transformation of Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs)), and SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir (Health and safety camps for sanitation workers).
i.The SHS campaign observed annually since 2017, has been a precursor to Swachh Bharat Diwas (SBD), which commemorates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October.
ii.2024 also marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), which was launched in 2014 with the ambitious goal of making India “Open-Defecation Free” (ODF) by 2nd October 2019.

IAF Contingent Participates in Exercise Eastern Bridge VII in Oman
The Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent comprising – Mikoyan-Gurevich (MiG)-29s, Jaguars fighter planes, and C-17 Globemaster III transport planes – is participating in the 7th edition of Exercise Eastern Bridge at Air Force base Masirah, Oman.
- The bilateral exercise began on September 11 2024 and will end on September 22 2024.
IA Participates in the 5th Al Najah Exercise
The 5th edition of the bilateral military exercise Al NAJAH between the Indian Army(IA) and the Royal Army of Oman began on September 13, 2024 at the Rabkoot Training Area in Salalah, Oman. It will end on 26th September, 2024.

Small Savings Schemes grow 13.8% led by Sukanya Samriddhi, Senior Citizen’s Scheme
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, small savings schemes grew by 13.8% up to February 2024, reaching Rs 18.1 lakh crore. These schemes, designed to finance government expenditure and promote saving habits, have shown consistent growth, particularly driven by the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS).
i.Seven small savings schemes, including Post Office Savings Scheme (PSS) and Post Office Recurring Deposits (PORD), recorded growth between 9% and 11%, with interest rates ranging from 4% to 9%.
- SSY and SCSS have seen the highest growth among all schemes.
ii.The outstanding balance of small savings schemes increased from Rs 6.2 lakh crore in 2015 to Rs 18.1 lakh crore in February 2024, with a 13.8% growth in February 2023.
iii.RBI mandated the frequency of credit information reporting to fortnightly basis w.e.f. January 1, 2025 to boost transparency in the system.
iv.CICs must now process credit information from credit institutions within five calendar days, a reduction from the previous seven-day window.

IREDA Signed MoU with SJVN & GMR For 900 MW Hydro Project in Nepal
New Delhi (Delhi) based Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA) has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SJVN Limited(formerly known as Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam) and GMR Energy Limited for the development and implementation of the 900 Megawatt (MW) Upper Karnali hydro-electric project in Nepal.
- The Board of Directors (BoD) of IREDA has granted in-principle approval for the project during their meeting on 16th July, 2024.
Signatories: The MoU was signed by SK Sharma, General Manager (GM) Finance and Administration (F&A) of IREDA; Jitendra Yadav, GM (F&A) SJVN; and SN Barde, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GMR Energy Limited in New Delhi.
i.The initiative aims at enhancing regional energy security by developing renewable energy infrastructure.
ii.It also aims to boost cross-border clean energy projects, maximise Nepal’s hydropower potential, and foster cross-border cooperation in the renewable energy sector.

SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn Mission Crew led by Billionaire Entrepreneur Returned to Earth
On 15th September 2024, SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn Mission Crew, led by an American billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, a pilot and the founder of electronic payments company Shift4, returned to the Earth following the successful completion of world’s 1st private spacewalk.
- The Dragon capsule of SpaceX which carried 4 crew members for the mission splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico near Dry Tortugas, Florida, the United States of America (USA).
- The mission achieved 1st ever private spacewalk while orbiting nearly 460 miles (i.e. 740 kilometers (kms)) above the Earth, lasted 1 hour and 46 minutes, and surpassing the International Space Station (ISS) and Hubble Space Telescope.
Note: The 1st-ever spacewalk was carried by the Soviet Union cosmonaut Alexei Leonov on 18th March, 1965.
Crew Members of the Mission:
The mission included 4 crew members: Jared Isaacman was the commander of the mission. While, Scott Poteet, a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel served as the pilot of the mission, Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, both senior engineers at SpaceX were the mission specialists.
About Polaris Dawn Mission:
i.It is the first of the three testing and development missions under the Polaris Program, collaboration between Jared Issacman and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
ii.The 5-day mission was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon9 rocket on 10th September, 2024 from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Centre of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Florida, the USA.
Key Highlights:
i.On 12th September 2024,Jared Issacman and Sarah Gillis became the 264th and 265th individual respectively to undertake a spacewalk and also became the world’s 1st private spacewalk.
- The crew members of the mission walked into the space by wearing SpaceX designed new Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suits.
ii.The mission has also achieved another milestone as it reached an orbit of over 870 miles (1,400 km) from Earth, which is more than twice the distance between Earth and the ISS. Also, it is the farthest any humans will have ventured since the end of the U.S. Apollo moon program in 1972.
ii.The crew of the Polaris Dawn mission became the 1st crew who has successfully conducted the test of SpaceX’s Starlink laser-based communications in space which will help in future space communications systems required for missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.
- Other than that, 4 astronauts conducted about 40 experiments, most about how weightlessness and radiation affect the body.

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Passed Away
On 11th September 2024, Alberto Kenya Fujimori Inomoto, the former President of Peru (officially the Republic of Peru), passed away at the age of 86 in Lima, Peru. He was born in Lima on 28th July 1938.
- Alberto served as the 54th President of Peru for the two consecutive five-year terms (1990 to 2000).
About Alberto Fujimori:
i. Alberto Fujimori, an engineer, professor and Peruvian politician, first entered politics in 1989 as the head of the new political party Cambio 90 (Change 90).
ii.He won in the 1990 presidential election and he was re-elected in 1995.
iii.In 2009, he was sentenced to 25 years in jail for human rights abuses, including authorising killings carried out by death squads, but he was released later.
iv.He was credited with restoring economic stability thanks to his “Fujishock” neoliberal policies.

International Day of Democracy 2024 – September 15
The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of Democracy (IDD) is annually observed across the globe on 15 September to promote and uphold the principles of democracy worldwide and raise awareness among the people about democratic values and rights.
- The 2024 theme of IDD is, ‘Ensuring Effective Governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at all Levels.’
Background:
i.On 8 November 2007, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/62/7, proclaiming the 15 September of each year as the International Day of Democracy.
