Tourism Minister G. Kishan Reddy Addressed 1st Incredible India International Cruise Conference 2022 in MumbaiGovt working on comprehensive national tourism policy

On May 14, 2022, the 2 day 1st Incredible India International Cruise Conference 2022(IIICC-2022) was held at Mumbai, Maharashtra which was inaugurated by Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways(MoPS&W) along with Minister of State (MoS) Shri Shripad Naik, (MoPS&W).Union Minister Gangapuram Kishan Reddy, Ministry of Tourism Addressed the event. IIICC 2022 was held on 14th and 15th May, 2022.

  • It was jointly organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India and FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry).Mumbai Port Authority, Sagarmala, Indian Ports Association are also part of organizers.   • The conference was an invitation for domestic and international tourists to ‘Come, Cruise in India’.
  • Union Minister Gangapuram Kishan Reddy Stated that government is working towards a comprehensive national tourism policy to give an impetus to the tourism industry.
  • The mascot for the event is named as ‘Captain Cruzo’.

Key Points:
i.The Central Government is making efforts to clean and rejuvenate our rivers including Namami Gange Project to provide a major boost to river-based tourist activities.
ii.On the second day of the conference, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy participated in the two Business sessions namely ‘Potential of River Cruising’ and ‘Cruise Tourism: Success Stories and Destination Development’. 
iii.Minister of State (MoS) Shripad Yesso Naik, Ministry of Tourism virtually laid the foundation stone for the third Chemical berth at Pir Pau Jetty and remotely inaugurated Kelshi Lighthouse in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra and Dhanushya Kodi Light House in Tamilnadu.
iv.It is estimated that, the iconic sea-cruise terminal coming up at BPX Indira Dock Mumbai International Cruise Terminal is expected to be commissioned by 2024.

Formation of HLC for the development of Cruise Tourism:
The Central Government has set up a High-Level Committee (HLC) to create an enabling ecosystem for the development of cruise tourism in India. The committee comprises government officials and cruise industry players.

  • This HLC will assist the Task Force with its ideas and suggestions to the committee
  • It should be noted that government has set up a Task Force under the Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and the Shipping secretary as its vice-chairman.

Eight MoUs signed at IIICC 2022:
Eight Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between Mumbai Port Trust, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and various cruise services operators in the presence of Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. These are as follows:
i.Mumbai Port and Angriya Sea Eagle Ltd for home porting their cruise ship in Mumbai for the upcoming cruising season.
ii.Mumbai Port and Waterways Leisure Tourism P. Ltd   for home porting their cruise ship in Chennai for the upcoming cruising season.
iii.Mumbai Port and Training Ship Rahaman for being an existing service provider in the field of Maritime Training for Cruise Vessels, it will endeavour to recruit Indian seafarers to support Indian Maritime Vision 2030.
iv.Mumbai Port and The Apollo Group USA for being an existing service provider to cruise operator in India, with approximately 600 seafarers.
v.Chennai Port and Waterways Leisure Tourism P. Ltd.  for home porting their cruise ship in Chennai for the upcoming cruising season.
vi.Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Antara Luxury River Cruises  for River Cruise between Varanasi (UP) and Bogibeel (Dibrugarh, Assam) via Kolkata under the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route.
vii.IWAI and Adventure Resorts and Cruises  for Development of Long Cruise on Kerela Backwaters (NW-3).
viii.IWAI and JM Baxi River Cruise between Varanasi and Bogibeel via Kolkata under the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route
Points to be noted:
i.Globally the river cruise market has grown at around 5% over the last few years and is expected to constitute around 37% of the cruise market by 2027.
ii.The Chairman of IWAI is Sanjay Bandopadhyay.

WEF 2022: 5 Indian Start-Ups Joins in 2022 Technology Pioneers Network
About 100 innovative tech firms have joined the Technology Pioneers Network 2022, with five of them being Indian start-ups. This was announced a ahead of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2022 annual meeting which going to be held from May 22 – 26 in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Permitted Lending by Commercial Banks to NBFCs & SFBs to NBFC-MFIs for on-lending to Priority Sectors banks can provide credit to nbfcs for on-lending to priority sectors

i.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) permitted commercial banks to continue providing credit facility to NBFCs (Non-Banking Financial Companies) for the purpose of on-lending to certain priority sectors. 
ii.The same is applicable for lending by Small Finance Banks (SFBs) to NBFC-MFIs (Microfinance institutions).
iii.This facility was earlier allowed till March 31, 2022.
About Reserve Bank of India (RBI):
i.RBI was established on April 1, 1935, in accordance with the provisions of the
RBI Act, 1934.
ii.The Central Office of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Calcutta but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.
iii.Though originally privately owned, since nationalization in 1949, the Reserve Bank is fully owned by the Government of India.

Dr. Manik Saha Sworn in As the New CM Of TripuraDr. Manik Saha on taking oath as Chief Minister of TripuraOn May 15, 2022, Dr. Manik Saha, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Tripura and a Rajya Sabha member, was sworn in as the Chief Minister (CM) of Tripura.

  • He was sworn in as the 12th CM of Tripura, and Governor Satyadeo Narayan Arya administered the oath of office to him in the Raj Bhawan in Agartala, Tripura.
  • His appointment followed the sudden resignation of his predecessor, Biplab Kumar Dev, who took office as the BJP’s first CM in Tripura in 2018.

About Dr Manik Saha:
i.Dr. Saha graduated from Lucknow’s King George Medical College and was a Professor of Dental Surgery by profession.
ii.Before joining the BJP in 2016, he was a member of the opposition Congress party.
iii. In 2018, he was appointed as the state BJP president.
iv.Dr. Saha was elected to the Rajya Sabha (upper house) in the biennial elections held in April 2022. He was the first BJP member of the Rajya Sabha from Tripura.

Rajiv Kumar Assumes Office as 25th Chief Election CommissionerRajiv Kumar takes charge as 25th Chief Election Commissioner

On May 15 2022, The Former Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar assumed charge as 25th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), replacing the Incumbent Sushil Chandra who retired on May 14 2022.

  • Rajiv Kumar’s major task will be to hold and oversee the President and the Vice-President elections, which are due to be conducted in July-August 2022.

About Rajiv Kumar:
i.Rajiv Kumar is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of 1984 batch.
ii.He held posts like Chairman of Public Services Enterprises Selection Board, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India and also as Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India (ECI) since September 2020 
iii.He retired from the IAS in February 2020 as the Union Finance Secretary.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Becomes President of UAE Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan elected as UAE President

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (popularly known as MBZ) has been unanimously elected President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by the Federal Supreme Council. He is also the Ruler of Abu Dhabi (UAE).

  • According to the Ministry of Presidential Affairs (UAE), he will succeed the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, former President of the UAE, and his appointment is made in accordance with Article 51 of the Constitution.

The Federal Supreme Council made the decision at a meeting held at Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi (UAE), which was chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.
About Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan:
i.He was born on March 11, 1961, and is the third son of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
ii.He is the half-brother of the former president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and has been the UAE’s de facto ruler for years, specifically since Khalifa suffered a stroke in 2014.
iii. Sheikh Mohammed previously served as the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, one of the seven city-states that make up the UAE.
iv.He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi and has led significant conservation efforts in the UAE and globally to protect falcons and houbara bustards.

  • This is only the third time the UAE has selected a president since its independence in 1971.
  • The most recent was in 2004, when Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan succeeded his and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a month after his death in 2004.

Somalia Elects Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as New PresidentSomalia elects Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as new president

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Somalia’s former leader, has been elected as President of Somalia, defeating Mohamed Abudallahi Mohamed (also known as Farmajo).Farmajo served as President of Somalia since 2017.
The polling took place at Halane Camp in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital.The 2022 election was limited to Somalia’s 328 Members of Parliament (MP). Given that the winner needs at least 184 votes to win, Mohamud received 214 votes to Farmajo’s 110 votes. 
About Hassan Sheikh Mohamud:
i.He hails from the central Somalia region of Hiran. He holds a master’s degree in technical education from Barkatullah University in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. 
ii.He was a co-founder of SIMAD university in Mogadishu.
iii.He is the leader of the Union for Peace and Development party, which has a majority in the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
iv.He served as president of Somalia from 2012 to 2017 and was beaten by Farmajo in the presidential election 2017.
About the Presidential Election 2022 Somalia:
i.Somalia has not held a one-person-one-vote democratic election since 1969 due to the country’s instability.
ii. This is only the third time that an indirect presidential election has been held in Somalia. Previous ones were held in Kenya and Djibouti, neighbouring countries of Somalia.

Adani Group Set to Buy Ambuja Cements, ACC for $10.5 bn from Holcim Ltd

Adani clinches $10.5 bn deal to buy Ambuja CementsAdani Group which belongs to Gautam Adani is set to acquire swiss multinational company Holcim’s stake in Indian companies Ambuja Cements and its subsidiary ACC for $10.5 bn (around Rs 81,361 crore), including the open offers.

Acquisition

  • The value for the Holcim stake and open offer consideration for Ambuja Cements and ACC is USD 10.5 billion, which makes this the largest-ever acquisition by Adani, and India’s largest-ever M&A transaction in the infrastructure and materials space.
  • Holcim, through its subsidiaries, holds 63.19 per cent in Ambuja Cements and 54.53 per cent in ACC (of which 50.05 per cent is held through Ambuja Cements).
  • Deutsche Bank, BarCap and Standard Chartered were financiers to the deal. Deutsche Bank was the financial adviser to Adani Group.

Union Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched Gatishakti Sanchar PortalMinister of Communications, Electronics, and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw launched Gatishakti Sanchar Portal

i.On May 14, 2022, the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Communications (MoC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(Meity) launched the GatiShakti Sanchar portal for Centralised Right of Way (RoW) approvals. It was launched on the lines of PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP), and can be accessed at http://www.sugamsanchar.gov.in
ii.This portal will provide a robust mechanism to achieve the goal of Broadband for All as envisaged in the National Digital Communication Policy (NDCP)-2.
iii.The portal has been developed by Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP)-based MP state Electronics Development Corporation on behalf of Department of Telecommunications (DoT), MoC.
iv.The timely disposal of RoW applications, within a span of 20 to 22 days from around 100 days, will enable speedy infrastructure creation resulting timely rollout of 5G Network also.

NAL Initiates Taxi Trials For Evaluation Of Indigenously Developed Digital Anti Skid Braking System For SARAS Mk 2NAL initiates taxi trials for evaluation of indigenously developed digital antiskid braking system for SARAS Mk 2

The digital anti-skid brake management system designed for SARAS Mark 2(SARAS MK II), 19 seat Light Transport aircraft, has been successfully validated by the National Aerospace Laboratories(NAL) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. NAL is part of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR) labs, has developed a state-of-the-art brake by wire electro-hydraulic braking system for civil aircraft for the first time in India.

i.Taxi Trial of the Anti-Skid Brake System was conducted at the speed of about 30 knots and the results were highly satisfactory.
ii.Digital Anti-Skid Braking System integration on SARAS Mark 2 will benefit operation from airfields with short runways to boost regional air connectivity.
iii.Yet more 15 to 20 taxi trials would be conducted to evaluate the system performance.

Components of SARAS Mk2

The NAL-developed SARAS Mk 2 aircraft features the most modern high-performance integrated avionics and flight control computer, including a multicore power PC, VPX bus architecture, and an ARINC 635 compliant real-time operating system with a safety-critical partitioned virtual wall.

  • In June 2019, the Union government gave the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR- NAL) approval to develop the SARAS-Mk2-19 Seat Light Transport aircraft.
  • Multirole commuter aircraft with unique features like the pressurized cabin, short take-off and landing, operation from hot and high altitude airfields, operation from semi-prepared runways, autopilot for CAT-II landing, glass cockpit, digitally controlled mechanical systems
  • It is also slated to be the most-versatile aircraft of its class for connecting remotely located Tier-II and Tier-III towns under the UDAN Scheme.

UDAN Scheme

  • UDAN means Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik, which means Let the common citizens of the country fly. A regional airport development program of the Government of India and part of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) of upgrading under-serviced air routes.
  • Its goal is to make air travel affordable and widespread, to boost inclusive national economic development, job growth and air transport infrastructure development of all regions and states of India.

Team India Men’s Badminton won the 32nd edition of Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thomas Cup 2022, badminton world men’s team championship, after beating the 14-time champion Indonesia by 3-0 held at the Impact Arena, in Bangkok, Thailand from May 8 to May 15 2022.

  • The Third and Fourth Podium were secured by Denmark and Japan respectively.

Key Highlights:
i.In the First Men’s Singles, the World championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen defeated Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting by 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 to give India a 1-0 lead.
ii.In the First Doubles game, the duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo by 18-21, 23-21, 21-19 extending India’s lead to 2-0.
iii.And finally in the Second Men’s Singles, the World championship silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth defeated Jonatan Christie by 21-15, 23-21 and secured a historic victory for India by leading 3-0.

2022 Italian Open: Novak Djokovic Won Men’s Singles & His 38th Masters 1000 Title; Iga Świątek Won Women’s SinglesItalian Open Djokovic Beats Tsitsipas For Record-Extending 38th Masters 1000 Title

The World no. 1 Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has won the 79th edition of the 2022 Internazionali BNL d’Italia of Rome title after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in Men’s Singles by 6-0 7-6 (7-5) held at Foro Italico, Rome, Italy, between May 2 to May 15 2022.

  • In the Women’s Singles, Iga Swiatek (World No. 1 by Women’s Tennis Association) defeated Ons Jabeur by 6-2, 6-2 to claim her fifth tournament victory. It was also her 28th win in a row.

Key Points:
i.Novak Djokovic won his 38th Masters 1,000 title after the victory over Casper Ruud in the semi-finals held on May 14 2022 and he is only the fifth man in the Open Era to reach the 1,000 wins milestone after Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafael Nadal.
ii.The 38th Masters 1000 title is also his 87th overall ATP title (Association of Tennis Professionals Title). 
ii.The Italian open 2022 title is his first title in this year (2022) and sixth in Rome (Previously in the year 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015 & 2020).

Former Australian Cricketer Andrew Symonds Passed AwayFormer Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds dies

Andrew Symonds, former Australian all-rounder, died in a car accident outside Townsville in Queensland state of Australia.
About Andrew Symonds:
i.Andrew Symonds was born on 9 June 1975 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
ii.He played 26 test matches and 198 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Australia and won Two back-to-back 50 over World Cups in 2003 and 2007.
iii.In 198 ODIs, Symonds scored over 5000 runs, including six hundreds and 30 half-centuries and also took 133 wickets.
iv.After retiring as a player in February 2012, Symonds became a popular commentator for cricket broadcasters.
v.Symonds has played for Deccan Chargers in the first three seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2011.

The United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Families is annually observed across the globe on 15th May to create awareness about the issues related to the family and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families. 

The day offers a platform to highlight the role of the family in the development process.
The theme of International Day of Families 2022 is “Families and Urbanization”.
The 2022 theme aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable, family-friendly urban policies.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution 44/82 on 9th December 1989 and proclaimed the year 1994 as the “International Year of the Family”.
ii.In 1993, UNGA adopted the resolution A/RES/47/237 titled “International year of the Family” and decided to devote one of its plenary meetings at the 48th session in early December 1993 to launch the International Year of the Family. 
iii.The resolution also decided that beginning in 1994, 15th May of every year shall be observed as the International Day of Families.

National Dengue Day 2022 – May 16 National Dengue Day - May 16 2022

National Dengue Day is annually observed across India on 16th May to create awareness about Dengue, a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. 
The day also aims to increase the preventive measure and preparedness for the control of dengue in India. 
Background:
National Dengue Day is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoH&FW) , Government of India which aims to create awareness about dengue and its preventive methods. 
About National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC):
NCVBDC is under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. 
NCVBDC is the central nodal agency for the prevention and control of six vector-borne diseases (VBDs).

International Day of Living Together in Peace 2022 – May 16International Day of Living Together in Peace - May 16 2022The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Living Together in Peace is annually observed across the globe on 16th May to promote inclusion, tolerance, solidarity and peace amongst the diverse communities of people.
The day also aims to uphold the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony.

  • International Day of Living Together in Peace 2022 is meant to signify “United in differences and diversity”.

Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/72/130 on  8th December 2017 and declared the 16th May of every year as the  International Day of Living Together in Peace. 
ii.The first-ever International Day of Living Together in Peace was observed on 16th May 2018.

International Day of Light(IDL) is annually observed across the globe on 16th May to celebrate the role of light in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy.

  • The observance of the International Day of Light calls to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential to foster peace and sustainable development.
  • The day marks the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman.

Vesak Day or Buddha Purnima – 16th May 2022 Vesak Day - May 16 2022

Vesak Day or Buddha Purnima is annually celebrated by members of the Buddhist community across the world on the first full moon day of the month of Vaisakh, which usually falls in April-May of the Gregorian calendar. 
The Buddha Purnima 2022 falls on 16th May 2022. 

  • The Buddha Purnima 2021 was celebrated on 26th May 2021. 
  • The Buddha Purnima 2023 will be observed on 5th May 2023. 

The day is observed based on the Asian lunisolar calendar.
Background:
The day marks the birth, enlightenment(nirvana), and death(parinirvana) of Siddhartha Gautama, or Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism who later became “The Buddha”.

  • Lord Buddha or Gautama Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini, Nepal in the year 623 B.C.

It is celebrated with great fervour in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and numerous other South East Asian countries including Thailand, Tibet, China, Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia, Cambodia and Indonesia & many other countries.
UN recognition:

The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/54/115 in 1999 and recognised the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May each year, the Day of Vesak, as the most sacred day to Buddhists, who commemorate the day of birth of Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment and his passing away.
