Historic title triumph India stun Indonesia 3-0 to win Thomas Cup

Team India Men’s Badminton won the 32nd edition of Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thomas Cup 2022, badminton world men’s team championship, after beating the 14-time champion Indonesia by 3-0 held at the Impact Arena, in Bangkok, Thailand from May 8 to May 15 2022.

  • The Third and Fourth Podium were secured by Denmark and Japan respectively.

Key Highlights:

i.In the First Men’s Singles, the World championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen defeated Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting by 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 to give India a 1-0 lead.

ii.In the First Doubles game, the duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo by 18-21, 23-21, 21-19 extending India’s lead to 2-0.

iii.And finally in the Second Men’s Singles, the World championship silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth defeated Jonatan Christie by 21-15, 23-21 and secured a historic victory for India by leading 3-0.

iv.Now India became the sixth country ever to win the Thomas Cup title. Only after Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Denmark and Japan.

v.India had previously reached the semifinals of the Thomas Cup in 1952, 1955 and 1979.

About 2022 Thomas Cup:

i.The 2022 Thomas and Uber Cup (officially known as TotalEnergies BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2022) is the 32nd edition of the Thomas Cup and the 29th edition of the Uber Cup, held at Impact Arena, Bangkok, Thailand from 8 to 15 May 2022.

ii.The biennial international badminton championship contested by the men and women’s national teams of the member associations of Badminton World Federation (BWF). 

iii.The 2022 Thomas cup and Uber Cup, marks the third time Thailand has hosted the Thomas Cup, and second time for the Uber Cup.

2022 Uber Cup:

South Korea won the 2022 BWF Uber Cup Final, badminton’s world women’s team championship,  defeating the 15 time Champions China(defending champion). The event was hosted at Bangkok, Thailand in the Impact Arena from 8 to 15 May 2022. South Korea lift the cup for only the second time in history after 12 years.

  • South Korea’s  Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan defeated China’s Chen Qing Chen & Jia Yi Fan in first Doubles.
  • South Korea’s Kim Hye Jeong and Kong Heeyong defeated China’s Huang Dong Ping & Li Wen Mei in 2nd doubles.
  • South Korea’s Sim Yujin defeated China’s Wang Zhi Yi in third singles.
