Nationwide lockdown extended till May 3, 2020 to contain COVID-19 spreadPM announces extension of lockdown

On April 14, 2020, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Damodardas Modi extended the nationwide lockdown till May 3, 2020, to halt COVID-19 spread. He made 7 points appeal (Saptapadi) to the citizens of India as a preventive measure from COVID-19 disease. These are:
i.Extra care of senior citizens as they are prone to COVID-19 infection due to weak immunity.
ii.Follow the protocols of lockdown and social distancing.
iii.Adopt guidelines issued by the Ayush Ministry to boost immunity.
iv.Download the Aarogya Setu App launched by the central government to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
v.Help the poor within means and fulfil their basic needs such as food.
vi.Businessmen and companies should not terminate their employees.
vii.To respect ‘corona warriors’, i.e. doctors, nurses, sweepers and police officers on ground.
As of April 14, the total number of coronavirus cases in India stands at 10,363. Out of these, 8,988 are active cases, 339 people have died due to novel coronavirus, 1,035 people have been cured or discharged and 1 patient has migrated.

Fit India and CBSE organizing first-ever live fitness sessions for school students amid lockdownFit India and CBSE organise first-ever live fitness sessions

Fit India in collaboration with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is organizing a first-of-a-kind live fitness session under its Fit India Active Day programme for school children across the country from 15th April 2020 at 9:30 am. The decision has been taken due to the nation-wide lockdown till May 3, 2020, to counter COVID-19 which has restricted the activities of children.

  • These online sessions will enable children to practice fitness even at home in order to remain healthy.
  • The guidelines of the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurvedic, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) to stay healthy and to build immunity will also be shared with students during this programme.

-Students can access these live sessions by distinguished fitness experts, emotional wellness experts, and yoga professionals on the Facebook and Instagram handles of Fit India Movement and CBSE. Launched on 29 Aug 2019 by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi its aim is to make physical fitness as part of lifestyle by teaching and practicing the art of taking care of one’s body and health daily. In this regard, Fit India Mission mandated schools to organize a Fit India School Week in the month of November/December to attain a Fit India School Certification. Already 13868 CBSE schools have been part of several Fit India programmes in the past and 11682 CBSE schools have already got the Fit India flag.

Uttar Pradesh became first state to initiate Pool Testing of COVID-19

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has given its approval for pool testing to Uttar Pradesh (UP), making latter the first state to do so. The decision has been taken to maximize the sample testing on a daily basis as the cases of COVID-19 positive patients are increasing in the state. As of April 13, 2020, the tally for coronavirus positive cases in the state is 558.
What is pool testing?
If 10 samples are mixed and tested for COVID-19 and if they test negative, then it will indicate that all samples are negative. But if the test is not negative, then individual testing will be done. This will increase the testing capacity at a time as well as accelerate the process using RTPCR ( Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction).
Initiatives by UP govt to tackle COVID-19 impact:
-Commencement of telephonic consultation facility through which people can call on toll free number 18001805145 and can consult with the doctors.
-The committee led by Deputy Chief Minister (CM) Keshav Prasad Maurya is ensuring social distancing protocol in construction-related work while another committee headed by Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma is taking care of the syllabus for online education in the state.
-Life insurance worth Rs 50 lakh has been provided to health workers, police personnel and home guards.
-More than 3.54 crore families of the state have been given free ration in the first phase of the curfew.

External affairs ministry announced COVID-19 training program for healthcare professionals from SAARC countries

On April 14, 2020, The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced a training program on COVID-19 from April 17 for healthcare professionals from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, it will be carried out by the Central Government’s  Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme.

i.It is to take forward the Prime Minister’s (PM) ‘Prepare Not Panic’ for ‘SAARC fights Corona’.
ii.PM Narendra Modi has suggested that the health professionals of the member nations come together to fight the coronavirus pandemic at the India-initiated video conference of SAARC leaders on March 15.
iii.India has proposed to set up a common electronic for all the member nations so as to share expertise & best practice to jointly combat the spread of the COVID-19.

Jim Corbett National Park of U’khand becomes India’s 1st quarantine centre for animals

On April 14, 2020, Jim Corbett National Park , the India’s oldest forested wildlife sanctuary located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, has become the India’s 1st quarantine centre for animals with symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Key Points:
i.At least 10 quarantine centers are being set up within the complex to handle the corona virus prey animals & Cameras will be installed in the park to monitor the cold and cough symptoms of animals.
ii.Background: After humans, the threat of COVID-19 is now hovering over wildlife. The NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority) has alerted the officials of country’s sanctuaries, forests and zoos after the Coronavirus infection was detected in the Malayan tiger ‘Nadia’ in the Bronx zoo of US (United States).

Named after tiger hunter turned conservationist Jim Corbett, this national park is one of the famous tiger destinations in India.
It has rich biodiversity including around 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species. The park covers more than 1288 sq km over 3 districts of Uttarakhand, Pauri Garhwal, Nainital, and Almora.

BSNL in partnership with SBI launches Bharat InstaPay a UPI-based payment platform

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in partnership with the State Bank of India (SBI) has launched a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based payment platform, Bharat InstaPay to enable all types of channel partners of BSNL to digitize their payment transactions on a round the clock basis/ real- time basis.
Key Points:
i.In particular it will help the prepaid sellers to buy the services immediately for sale.
ii.It will improve BSNL’s credibility towards partners, & will  help in growth of partners’ business at a faster pace.
iii.1 time online verification process is introduced, which is to be done by the partners themselves by visiting the portal.

IMF cuts India GDP growth to 1.9%, projects while Barclays forecasted it to 0%IMF cuts India GDP growth to 1

International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its “World Economic Outlook, April 2020” has decreased India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Products) growth rate to 1.9% projection from 5.8 % for fiscal year 2020-21 starting April 1, 2020. It has also predicted that in FY 21-22 the Indian economy will recover strongly with a growth projection of 7.4%. This current projected GDP growth rate at 1.9% for 2020-21 is 3.9% lower than the January outlook and 5.1% lower than the projection made in 2019.

  • On the global front, the economy is projected to contract by –3% in FY 20-21 while it will grow by 5.8% in 2021 as economic activity normalizes due to the containment of COVID-19.
  • The ‘Great Lockdown’ to combat the covid-19 outbreak has marked the worst recession in world economy since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Projections by other Organizations:
-Investment bank Barclays Predicted India’s growth to 0% for calendar year 2020 from its earlier projection of 2.5%.
-Rating agency ICRA Ltd projected the Indian economic growth at anywhere between -1% and 1% in FY 20-21.

Telangana CM recommended the implementation of “Helicopter Money”helicopter money

While formulating strategies to curb the adverse impact of COVID-19, a term “helicopter money” landed on the internet surface. This term has been used by Telangana Chief Minister (CM) Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao during a video-conference with Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

  • In order to deal with the financial crisis powered by COVID-19, the Telangana CM has recommended that RBI should implement ‘helicopter money’ by way of quantitative easing (QE) policy. QE is followed all over the world, is the only way to deal with the situation.

Algerian Novelist Abdelouahab Aissaoui wins 13th International Arab fiction prize 2020author Abdelouahab Aissaoui wins International Prize for Arabic Fiction

On April 14, 2020  1st Algerian Novelist, Abdelouahab Aissaoui, to win the 13th International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) 2020 for his novel ‘The Spartan Court’ published by Dar Min in 2018 & will receive USD 50,000 and funding will be provided for the English translation. It is shortlisted from 6 novels, where the other 5 authors will each receive USD 10,000.
Essence of the book
It is a historical novel that relates the power struggle between Ottoman and French colonial powers in Algeria where it interconnects the lives of 5 characters in Algiers at the beginning of the 19th century (1815 to 1833).

Novelis Inc. of Hindalco acquired US’s Aleris for $2.8 billion deal

The Aditya Birla group’s Hindalco Industries Ltd. has acquired Aleris Corporation through its wholly owned subsidiary Novelis Inc. for an enterprise value of $2.8 billion (Rs 21,295 crores). Hindalco is now one of the world’s largest aluminium makers.

  • This acquisition took place after 2 years of signing the deal. It’s deadline was January 2020 but was delayed due to regulatory hurdles.
  • Novelis will acquire Aleris’ 13 plants across North America, Europe and Asia.

Aleris Corp was Ohio, United States (US)-based aluminium rolled products maker and has long-term supply contracts with aircraft makers Boeing, Airbus and Bombardier. The acquisition will also give Hindalco access to the aluminium supply market for the building and construction segments.

DRDO develops COVSACK for COVID-19 sample collectionCOVID-19 sample collection booth

On April 14, 2020 The Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), under  Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in consultation with the doctors of Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), Hyderabad, has developed  COVID Sample Collection Kiosk (COVSACK) for healthcare workers to safely collect COVID-19 samples from suspected patients.
Key Points
i.The patient under test walks into the kiosk and a nasal or oral swab is taken by a healthcare professional from outside through the built-in gloves, the shielding screen protects them from aerosols/droplet transfer which minimises the requirements of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) change by health care workers.
ii.After the patient leaves the kiosk, the 4-end sprayers fitted in the cabin disinfect the empty room by spraying the disinfectant mist for 70 seconds & then it is flushed by water and Ultra Violet (UV) light disinfection.
iii.In less than 2 minutes, the system is ready for the next use, voice command can be given by a 2 way communication system integrated with the COVSACK & is possible to configure COVSACK to be used either from inside or outside as required by the medical professionals.
iv.The COVSACK costs nearly Rs 1 lakh. DRDO has designed and developed 2 units, after successful testing & has delivered to ESIC Hospital in Hyderabad.

Pharma majors Sanofi & GlaxoSmithKline joined hands to prepare vaccine for coronavirus

On April 15, 2020, GlaxoSmithKline plc, a British multinational pharmaceutical company, has tied-up with France’s Pharmaceutical company Sanofi S.A., to develop the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine to deal with the current epidemic.
Key Points:
i.Both companies plan to conduct the first phase clinical trials in the second half of 2020. If it succeeds, it is planned to complete its development by the second half of 2021 for availability based on regulatory approval.
ii.Under the partnership, Sanofi will deliver the S-protein COVID-19 antigen, based on ‘Recombinant DNA’ technology. Based on this technology, Sanofi designed the product Recombinant Influenza in the US. At the same time, GSK of London will provide adjuvants (additives that boost the immune response and can reduce the amount of vaccine protein required per dose).

Researchers at NIT-Karnataka develops cost-effective disinfectant chamber called ‘ZERO-COV’

On April 14, 2020, In view of increasing pandemic coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, a team of researchers from National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K) at Surathkal, has designed a disinfection chamber called ‘ZERO-COV’ to disinfect personal protective equipment (PPE) tools, surgical masks, vegetables, packaged food items, currency notes and other day-to-day items within 15 minutes.
Key Points:
i.The chamber, developed by Arun M Isloor, professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at NIT-K, along with research scholar Syed Ibrahim, built on an old unused refrigerator and consumes 254 nanometres (nm) wavelength of C-type UV(Ultraviolet) radiation that can destruct or inactivate all surface contamination bacteria and viruses up to 99.9 %, including coronavirus.
ii.The chamber has been equipped with three UV- C lamps each consuming 11 watts of power to provide the radiation. It can be placed at the entrance of the house or office.
iii.This technology has been recommended by WHO (World Health Organization) & is being accepted by the scientific community for surface disinfection.

Government launches ‘CovidGyan’ a science communication initiative

Government launches a multi-institutional, multi-lingual science communication initiative, ‘CovidGyan’ on April 3 to bring together the collection of resources, which are generated by public supported research institutions in India & associated programs in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 so as to create public awareness, & to conduct a complete approach to understand the disease & ways to mitigate it.
Key Points
i.It will assist as a ‘go-to’ repository of information regarding COVID-19, & is user-friendly authentic, reliable, trustworthy and can be accessed through https://covid-gyan.in/
ii.It is designed with a number of features to provide accurate information by talks from eminent scientists in audio/podcast formats, infographics, posters, videos, Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs) and myth busters, and even links to scientific papers.
iii.The initiative is the idea of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) & several other partners have also joined including, Vigyan Prasar, India Bioscience, and the Bangalore Life Science Cluster (BLiSc), Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (InStem), Centre for Cellular And Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), and National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS).

Former Pakistani first-class Cricketer Zafar Sarfraz passed away at 50 due to CoronavirusPakistani cricketer Zafar Sarfraz

On 13th April 2020, Former Pakistani first-class cricketer, Zafar Sarfaraz ,50 years, who tested positive to COVID-19 passed away in a hospital at Peshawar, Pakistan. He was born on 30th October 1969 in Peshawar, North West Frontier Province, Pakistan.
Key Points:
i.Zafar Sarfraz, middle-order batsman played 15 First Class (FC) Games for Peshawar and played 6 List A Matches for Peshawar Cricket Team between 1988 to 1992.
ii.He became the coach of the Under-19 Peshawar Cricket Team after his retirement from playing competitive cricket in 1994.
iii.He also worked in the National Bank of Pakistan.
iv.He is the first professional cricketer to die from contracting the novel coronavirus in Pakistan.
v.He was the brother of Akhtar Sarfraz who was a Pakistani cricket coach and an international cricketer and a selector of Pakistani women’s cricket team who died on 10th June 2019 due to Colon cancer.

Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy launches ‘YSR Nirman’ online platform

Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister (CM) Jagan Mohan Reddy launches ‘YSR Nirman’ an online platform on April 6 to help various departments of the State to procure cement from suppliers for government works such as Polavaram irrigation project, housing and roads & also display availability of cement demand and supply on a real-time basis.
Key Points
i.The Government departments, district collectors, AP Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) and other suppliers will be given access to the portal with user IDs and Passwords, the District Collector will forward the consolidated demand to APCMA and it will then allocate the suppliers based on the quantity of cement.
ii.It connects various stakeholders such as Cement Manufacturers Association, manufacturing companies and government departments.
iii.This portal will help reduce the waiting time of buyers & will also complete the project on time without any delay & increases the accountability & transparency in the process.
iv.The State held a meeting with the cement manufacturers in February & decided that all the government departments should procure cement at Rs 225 for Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) & Rs 235 for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) a bag including Goods and Service Tax (GST).

UP govt launches Annapurna, Supply Mitra portals for citizens’ food needs

Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government has launched two portals namely the Annapurna portal and the Supply Mitra portals for the convenience of the food needs for the people of the state during the COVID-19 crisis. Alok Sinha, Commissioner of Agricultural Production, UP, launched the portal.
Key Points:
i.The Annapurna portal will help people get the knowledge of food products and packets.
ii.Supply Mitra portal will provide free home delivery of etables.
