Government set to Sell the Subsidiaries of Air IndiaAfter Air India, government set to sell Alliance Air under asset-disposal programmeFollowing the privatisation of Air India (AI), the Government of India (GoI) started its asset disposal programme of AI’s subsidiaries.

  • Air India Asset Holdings Pvt Ltd (AIAHL), the wholly-owned regional subsidiary of AI consists of a company of ground handling, engineering, and Alliance Air to be privatised for clearing of its liabilities and disposal of assets.
  • Recently, Talace Pvt Ltd (the subsidiary of Tata Sons Private Ltd) won the final bid for acquiring the national carrier AI by submitting Rs 18,000 crore bid.
  • In 2019, GoI has formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) AIAHL for holding debt and non-core assets of the Air India group.
  • The 4 subsidiaries of Air India include Air India Air Transport Services Ltd (AIATSL), Airline Allied Services Ltd (AASL), Air India Engineering Services Ltd (AIESL) and Hotel Corporation of India Ltd (HCI) along with non-core assets, painting and artefacts, and other non-operational assets, were transferred to AIAHL.

SNV Aviation Pvt Ltd gets NOC from MoCA to operate ‘Akasa Air’ by 2022Rakesh Jhunjhunjwala-backed Akasa Air gets govt approvali.On October 11, 2021, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) gave NOC (No Objection Certificate) to SNV Aviation Pvt Ltd to operate commercial flights across India under the brand name ‘Akasa Air’ from summer 2022.
ii.This NOC will be followed by a security background check after which the airline will apply for AoP (air operator permit) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
iii.It should be noted that this proposed airline is backed by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the Big Bull or Warren Buffett of India; and former Jet Airways CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Vinay Dube.

Low-Income Countries’ Debt rose 12% to record $860 bn in 2020: WB ReportPoor countries' debt rose 12% to record $860 bln in 2020i.On October 11, 2021, World Bank (WB) in its report titled ‘International Debt Statistics 2022’ warned against a 12% debt rise of the world’s low-income countries to $860 billion in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report called for urgent efforts to reduce debt levels.
ii.Half of the world’s poorest countries were in external debt distress or at high risk of it.
iii.The external debt stocks of low- and middle-income countries combined raised 5.3% in 2020 to $8.7 trillion.

“Annually 22,000 Girls die of Pregnancy in Child Marriage” – ReportChild marriage kills more than 60 girls a day globallyGlobally, Child marriage kills over 60 girls a day, of which South Asia is responsible for 6 deaths a day, as per the “Global Girlhood Report 2021: Girls’ Rights in Crisis” report released by Save the Children International on the ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ (11th October).

  • The report estimates that annually 22,000 girl child die due to child marriage, with pregnancy & childbirth being the major cause of death.

Note – In 1978 Government of India had amended the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929 & raised the legal age for Marriage is 18 years for Girls and 21 years for Boys.
Overview of the Report:
i.West & Central Africa is responsible for over half the deaths related to Child marriage, nearly 9,600 annual deaths or 26 deaths a day. The region also records the highest number of Child marriages in the world.
ii.South Asia is responsible for 2,000 child marriage-related deaths every year, which is around 6 deaths a day, which is followed by East Asia & Pacific with 650 annual deaths or 2 daily deaths.
iii.Nearly 80 million child marriages were prevented in the last 25 years, but the situation worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic.
iv.Girl children faced increased risk of violence during the lockdown, and an estimated 10 million girls will be victims of Child marriage by 2030.
v.The report advises governments to prioritize issues related to girl child & gender-based violence.
vi.The organisation is calling on governments to Raise girls’ voices; Address immediate and ongoing risks of gender-based violence, including child marriage; Guarantee the rights of all girls; Ensure the safe and unrestricted participation of female humanitarian staff in all humanitarian response efforts; Join the Generation Equality movement.

  • This facility will enable the Whatsapp users to avail loan with minimum documentation and get approval in five minutes.

i.It will benefit WhatsApp’s 45 crore-plus users across India who can avail this 24×7 loan facility.

CCI Imposed Penalties on 2 Firms for Bid Rigging GAIL’s Tender; CCI Approved Internal Restructuring of TVS Group

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed monetary penalties on 2 firms, PMP Infratech Private Limited and Rati Engineering Private Limited, for allegedly rigging a bid floated by Gail (India) Limited in 2017-2018 to restore a site in Ahmedabad and Anand Areas of Gujarat.
The 2 firms have contravened the provisions of Section 3(3)(d) read with Section 3(1) of the Competition Act, 2002 which prohibit anti-competitive agreements including bid-rigging.
Penalty:
i.CCI imposed a penalty of Rs 25 lakh on PMP Infratech Pvt. Ltd and Rs 1 lakh penalty on individuals who managed and controlled the firm.
ii.CCI imposed a penalty of Rs 2.5 lakh penalty on Rati Engineering Pvt. Ltd and Rs 50000 on the individual who managed and controlled the firm.
iii.CCI has also passed a cease and desist order.
CCI Approves Internal Restructuring of the TVS Group:
Under Section 31(1) of the Competition Act, 2002, CCI has approved the internal restructuring of the TVS Group.  The approved internal restructuring of the TVS group is on the basis of a Memorandum of Family Arrangement, the Composite Scheme of Amalgamation and Arrangement and board resolutions.

  • The parties involved in the transaction include T V Sundram Iyengar & Sons Private Limited (TVSS), involved in the production & distribution of automotive components, Sundaram Industries Private Limited (SI), engaged in providing tyre solutions and manufacturing rubber compound, Southern Roadways Private Limited (SRW), engage in road transport, and parcel services and 12 others.

Welspun Corp Ltd to Develop World’s 1st Guideline for Transportation of Hydrogen Gas in Pipelines

Welspun Corp Limited(WCL), the World’s 2nd largest manufacturer of large diameter pipes based in Mumbai, has joined a global industry project to develop the World’s 1st guideline for the transportation of Hydrogen Gas in existing and new offshore pipelines.

  • WCL is the first company from India to join the H2pipe joint Industry project on Hydrogen Pipelines launched by the DNV AS Energy Systems Pipeline Technology, a leading industrial certification body.

Key points:
i.As a member of the steering committee, WCL will collaborate with 24 premier energy companies which include, Shell, BP, Total Energies, Equinor, Wood, Orsted, Gassco, Wintershall Dea, Intecsea, Subsea7, TechnipFMC and Saipem, to provide technical expertise in the H2pipe project.
ii.In this project, WCL will assist to develop a recommended practice for design, re-qualification, construction and operation of pipelines for hydrogen gas transportation in offshore pipelines and complement DNVGL ST F101(submarine pipeline systems) and other existing standards.
H2Pipe project:

H2Pipe Project is an industry-first project which will provide guidance to the global energy sector, which is shifting towards clean energy using alternate sources.

  • Hydrogen is one of the important elements of the energy transition.

Execution:
i.The H2Pipe project will be executed in multiple phases.
ii.Phase 1 will focus on the assessment of existing standards, including the offshore standard DNVGL-ST-F101, to identify the scope and additional considerations for hydrogen transportation.
iii.The following phases will be experimental to define the requirements and acceptance criteria for offshore hydrogen pipelines

Germany unveils world’s first driverless train  Germany unveils copyGerman rail operator Deutsche Bahn and industrial group Siemens unveiled the world’s first automated, driverless train in the city of Hamburg, Germany. According to them, it is more punctual and energy efficient than traditional trains.

  • Four more driverless trains will join the northern city’s S-Bahn rapid urban rail network.
  • These rails will start carrying passengers from December, using the existing rail infrastructure and will be sharing tracks with other regular trains.
  • It is part of a 60 million euro ($70 million) modernization of Hamburg’s rapid urban rail system.
  • The automated trains can transport up to 30 per cent more passengers, improve punctuality and save more than 30 per cent energy.
  • Although the train is fully automated, a driver will still be present to supervise journeys whenever there are passengers on board.

The book  provides an outlook for comprehensive overview of managing plastic waste by representing and discussing components of the entire plastic waste value chain.
Key points
i.The handbook has suggested urban local bodies across states adopt the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) model and  implement it as a public-private partnership (PPP) model for sustainable management of urban plastic waste.
ii.The materials reclamation facility or recycling facility is a specialized plant that receives, separates, and prepares recyclable materials for marketing to end-user manufacturers.
iii.The model is initially funded by private players, supported by urban local bodies (ULBs), and operated by service providers including local organizations and waste management agencies.

World Migratory Bird Day 2021 – October 9 World Migratory bird copyWorld Migratory Bird Day(WMBD) is annually observed across the globe on two peak days each year (second Saturday in May and in October) to create awareness of migratory birds and the importance of international cooperation to conserve the migratory birds and their habitats.World Migratory Bird Day 2021 was celebrated on 8th May and 9th October 2021.

  • World Migratory Bird Day 2020 was celebrated on 9th May and 10th October 2020.
  • World Migratory Bird Day 2022 will be observed on 14th May and 8th October 2022.

The theme of the World Migratory Bird Day 2021 is “Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird!”, which focuses on the phenomena of bird song and bird flight.
2 day meeting of Central Asian Flyway countries:
i.The two day Online Meeting of 30 countries (including India) under the Central Asian Flyway(CAF) region started on 6th October 2021.
ii.Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India addressed the meeting and highlighted the importance of conservation of migratory birds.

World Arthritis Day 2021 – October 12 World Arthritis Day - October 12 2021 copyWorld Arthritis Day(WAD) is annually observed across the globe on October 12th to create awareness about the existence and impacts of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases(RMDs).
Arthritis is a term used for more than 100 joint-related diseases, which causes swelling in or around a joint, resulting in pain, stiffness, and sometimes difficulty moving.
12th October 2021 marks the observance of the 25th WAD.
Background:
In 1996, the Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) established World Arthritis Day(WAD), as a global initiative to raise awareness of issues affecting people with RMDs.
EULAR celebrates WAD 2021 focusing on its Campaign entitled “Don’t Delay, Connect Today: Time2Work”.

The World Day Against the Death Penalty 2021 is dedicated to women who risk being sentenced to death, who have received a death sentence, who have been executed, and to those who have had their death sentences commuted, exonerated, or pardoned.
Background:
i.The World Day Against the Death Penalty was initiated by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, a coalition of NGOs in 2003.
ii.In 2007, the Council of Europe and the European Union officially recognized World Day as European Day Against the Death Penalty.
