IWAI & CSL signed MoU to build India’s 1st Hydrogen Fuel Cell Catamaran Vessel and Electric Hybrid Vessels

On November 11, 2022, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to build India’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell catamaran vessel for Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh(UP).

  • CSL has also signed MoU to construct electric catamaran vessels for UP and Assam.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Heavy Industry Mahendra Nath Pandey, Chief Minister(CM) of UP Yogi Adityanath at Varanasi, UP.

Key Points:
i.The hydrogen fuel cell catamaran will be an airconditioned vessel with 100-passenger capacity. It will reduce carbondioxide emissions by 250 MT (metric Tonne) annually.
ii.The design and development of this vessel will be undertaken by CSL in collaboration with KPIT Technologies Limited, Pune (Maharashtra).

  • It will be designed to Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) standards.

ii.The vessel will be deployed at Varanasi after test and trial runs in Kochi (Kerala).
iii.Based on the success of the project, the technology can be adopted for greening of cargo vessels and small country crafts.
Building of 8 Hybrid electric Catamaran vessels:
CSL also inked an MoU for the construction of 8 Hybrid electric Catamaran vessels viz. six hybrid electric catamaran vessels for UP and two for Assam with an outlay of Rs 130 crores.
i.The vessels will have a capacity of 50 persons and will be deployed in Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura-Vrindavan of UP and Guwahati in Assam.
ii.It will reduce carbondioxide emissions by 200 MT annually.
iii.It will be designed to IRS standards.

Highlights of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to Bengaluru, KarnatakaPM Modi visit to Bengaluru HighlightsThe Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi, visited Bengaluru in Karnataka, to inaugurate the second terminal of Kempegowda International Airport, to flag off South India’s first Vande Bharat Express & Kashi Darshana train at KSR railway station, and to unveil the 108-foot-high bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.
PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the newly built Terminal 2 of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which is built at an investment of Rs. 5,000 crores.

  • The terminal, nicknamed “Terminal in a Garden,” is an eco-friendly structure built using bamboo and can accommodate 2.5 crore passengers per year.

He has flagged off the ‘Chennai-Mysuru Vande Bharat Express’ train at the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Railway Station in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • This is the first Vande Bharat Express train in South India and the fifth such train in India.

PM Narendra Modi unveiled the 108-foot bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, labelled as the “Statue of Prosperity.”

  • The statue was built to honour Nadaprabhu Kempegowda’s contribution to the development of Bengaluru.

According to the “World Book of Records,” it is the “first and highest bronze statue of a city founder.”

Aquaconnect becomes 1st Indian Fisheries Start-Up to get ISO 27001 Certification

US Treasury removes India from its Currency Monitoring List

On November 11, 2022, According to the report ‘Macroeconomic and Foreign Exchange Policies of Major Trading Partners of the United States’ the United States (US) Department of Treasury removed India along with Italy, Mexico, Thailand and Vietnam from its Currency Monitoring List of major trading partners that merit close attention to their currency practices and macroeconomic policies.

  • India had been on the list for the last two years.

This move followed the US’ Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen visit to New Delhi where she held talks with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She also addressed the the US-India Businesses and investment Opportunities event in New Delhi.

Currency Monitoring List:
An economy meeting two of the three criteria in the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015 is placed on the Watch List. the country meeting all three criteria are labelled as a ‘currency manipulator’.
The US Treasury Department assess the macroeconomic and exchange rate policies of the US’ trading partners for three specific criteria:

  • A significant bilateral trade surplus with the United States is a goods and services trade surplus that is at least USD 15 billion
  • A material current account surplus is one that is at least 3% of Gross domestic product (GDP), or a surplus for which the Treasury estimates there is a material current account “gap” using the Treasury’s Global Exchange Rate Assessment Framework (GERAF).
  • Persistent, one-sided intervention occurs when net purchases of foreign currency are conducted repeatedly, in at least 8 out of 12 months, and these net purchases total at least 2% of an economy’s GDP over a 12-months.

Key Points:
i.In this biannual report, Treasury reviewed and assessed the policies of major US trading partners, comprising approx 80% of US foreign trade in goods and services, during the four quarters through June 2022.
ii.China, Japan, Korea, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan are the seven economies that are a part of the current monitoring list.
iii.Once again, Switzerland has exceeded the thresholds of all 3 criteria and it is being labelled as a “Currency Manipulator.

FAO Report: “Food Outlook” – November 2022 Edition; Warns of Concerns as Global Food Import Bill Approaches USD 2 Trillion

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) has published a report titled “Food Outlook”: Biannual Report on Global Food Markets (November 2022 edition) that projects higher-than-anticipated increase in world food import bill, with an estimated USD 1.94 trillion (~USD 2 trillion) in 2022.

  • According to the report, many economically weaker countries pay more while receiving less food, while importing nations deal with price hikes for basic commodities like grains and vegetable oils, signalling a rise of food insecurity.

Food Outlook by FAO
FAO’s Food Outlook is a biannual publication (May/June and November/December) that focuses on developments affecting global food and feed markets.
Note: The FAO’s food import bill covers a wider range of items, from fruits and vegetables to seafood, cocoa, tea, and spices, as well as beverages and staples like grains and meat.
Key Cautions:
i.According to the Food Outlook report, the new forecast indicated an all-time high and a 10% increase over the record level of 2021.
ii.High-income nations are responsible for the bulk of the bill increase, which is primarily attributable to rising global prices, while volumes are also expected to rise.
iii.The aggregate food import bill for the group of low-income nations is likely to stay nearly unchanged, despite a predicted 10% decrease in volume terms.
iv.Food imports will surpass the all-time record by USD 180 billion, or 10% in 2021, with high-income and upper-middle-income countries pushing the increase.
v.The global import bill for agricultural inputs such as fertilisers, fuel, and seeds are predicted to reach a record USD 424 billion in 2022, an increase of 48% from 2021 and up to 112% from 2020.

BANKING & FINANCE

SEBI introduces Regulatory Framework for Online Bond Platform Providers; Tweaks takeover code to Facilitate Disinvestment of PSUsSebi introduces regulatory framework for online bond platform providersi.The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced a regulatory framework to facilitate online bond platforms providers that are selling listed debt securities w.e.f. November 9, 2022.
ii.In this regard, SEBI has amended NCS (Issue and Listing of Non-Convertible Securities) Regulations, 2021.
iii.SEBI also amended its Takeover Code to facilitate transactions involving change in control/disinvestment of State-owned enterprises or Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
iv.SEBI notified rules reducing the minimum holding requirement of Real Estate Investment Trust (REITs) units by sponsors to 15% from 25% at present to encourage more companies to float REITs.

RBI Approves Amalgamation of Shree Sharada Sahakari Bank with Cosmos Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the amalgamation of Shree Sharada Sahakari Bank Ltd. in Pune, Maharashtra, with The Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd. in Pune, Maharashtra.

  • RBI has approved the scheme in accordance with the authority granted under Section 44A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 as amended vide the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2020 (39 of 2020).
  • This merger in the cooperative banking sector is the first of its kind since the RBI issued a circular on the absorption of smaller banks by larger entities in March 2021 and 16th of its kind by Cosmos Bank.

With effect from October 30, 2022, all Shree Sharada Sahakari Bank Ltd. branches in Pune would function as branches of The Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd. in Pune.

RBI Revokes Authorisation Certificate of Chennai-Based GI Technology
The RBI has revoked the Certificate of Authorization (CoA) of GI Technology Private Limited, citing governance concerns and non-compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • GI Technology Private Limited is a Payment System Operator (PSO) based in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) that issues and operates prepaid payment instruments.

The RBI has cancelled the CoA in accordance with Section 8 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.

  • Following the termination of the CoA, the company is no longer permitted to issue or operate prepaid payment instruments.
  • However, customers or merchants who have a valid claim on the firm as PSO, can approach the company for settlement of their claims.

HDFC Bank Partners with Arzooo to Offer Purchase Cards to RetailersHDFC Bank partners with Arzooo to offer purchase cards to retailers with up to Rs 1 crore creditHDFC Bank Partnered with Arzooo to launch Purchase cards that are exclusively designed for offline small and mid-sized retailers with an aim to roll out over one lakh cards in the next 12 months.

  • The existing 40,000 retail partners on the Arzooo platform will now be able to manage their working capital efficiently.

Features:
i.The purchase cards are provided with interest-free credit for up to one month with a credit limit of up to Rs 1 crore.

  • In addition, the card is also integrated with the Arzoo mobile application for ease of use during checkout.

ii.These credit cards will provide easy access to huge untapped markets in tier II and tier III cities, especially those that are in demand of white goods, white goods means Large electrical goods used domestically such as refrigerators and washing machines, typically white in colour.
iii.In 2022, Arzooo disbursed around Rs. 100 Crore worth of credit to retailers. The growth of retailers who took credit was over 800 % and also the sales on the Arzooo platform grew by 400% due to access to capital along with an increase in demand.

West Bengal Govt’s Lakshmir Bhandar bags the SKOCH Award

West Bengal (WB) has bagged the prestigious SKOCH award in the women and child development category for its popular ‘Lakshmir Bhandar‘ scheme. The award recognizes both the government and 2 crore women of the state who have been empowered by the scheme.

  • The WB government launched the scheme in August 2021 to provide financial support to a woman head of a family, aged between 25-60 years.
  • The scheme provides Rs 500 per month to people in the general caste category and roughly Rs 1,000 per month to those in the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories.

Note: The SKOCH award is awarded for several reasons, including strong governance, inclusive growth, excellence in technology and applications, change management, corporate leadership, empowerment, and a few others.

Minister for Power RK Singh Launches Green Energy Open Access PortalGreen Energy Open Access portalOn 11th November 2022, Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, R K Singh launched the Green Energy Open Access Portal to promote clean and green energy initiated by the Government of India (GoI).

  • The web portal was designed and developed by Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO), the central nodal agency for the implementation and operation of the portal.
  • Attendees – Krishan Pal, Minister of State(MoS) for Power; Alok Kumar, Secretary (Power); S R Narasimhan, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), POSOCO along with other senior officers were also present on the occasion.

About the portal:
i.This portal can be accessed for the processing of applications related to green energy open access by the stakeholders including open access participants, traders, Power Exchanges, National / Regional / State Load Despatch Centres, and Central/State transmission utilities.
ii.The portal has been launched with an aim to ensure affordable, reliable, sustainable, and green energy for all and also to continue several other initiatives.
iii.It also provides a transparent, simplified, uniform and streamlined procedure for granting open access to green energy that will be key to facilitating the deepening of electricity markets and enabling the integration of Renewable Energy (RE) resources into the grid.
Key highlights:
i.The Green Energy Open Access rules support India’s vision of a transition to clean energy with the participation of all generators, DISCOMs, and other stakeholders.
ii.The Green Energy open Access is allowed to any consumer with load limit reduced from 1000 kW to 100 kW and allows consumers to access green power easily through transparent, simplified, uniform and streamlined procedure

  • The Approval for Green Energy Open Access will be granted to a Consumer in a time-bound manner within 15 days.

iv.Background – On 6th June 2022 Ministry of Power notified the Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy through Green Energy Open Access) Rules, 2022 for the promotion of the generation, purchase and consumption of green energy including the energy from waste-to-energy plants.

President Droupadi Murmu Launches e-KUMBH Portal in Bhubaneswar

On 11th November 2022 the President of India, Droupadi Murmu,  launched e-KUMBH (Knowledge Unleashed in Multiple Bharatiya Languages) portal which contains engineering courses and books would be available in 12 scheduled Indian languages from Jayadev Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

  • She also released 20 engineering books, 9 for graduation and 11 for diploma students of engineering, are translated by the Technical Education Department in collaboration with the Institute of Odia Studies and Research (IOSR). The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) signed an MoU with IOSR on 18th October 2021, to introduce engineering education in the Odia language.
  • Glossary of 50,000 technical terms in Odia language developed by Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT).

Key highlights:
i.The introduction of learning in regional and local languages ​will develop creative thinking and analytical skills among students along with intellectual development by providing equal opportunities to urban and rural students.

  • It also help in building a well-educated, aware and a vibrant society.

ii.Until now, AICTE had completed translation of engineering courses available only in English into 12 scheduled Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Punjabi, Odia and Assamese.

  • The book translation in Urdu and Malayalam languages is under process.

China successfully Launches Cargo Spacecraft for its Space Station in orbitchina successfully launches cargo spacecraft for its space station in orbitOn 12th November 2022 China successfully launched its cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-5 upon the Long March-7 Y6 rocket, to deliver supplies for its Tiangong space station from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in the southern island province of Hainan.

  • The construction of China’s space station is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

Highlights:
i.BackgroundIn October 2022, China launched the second lab called Mengtian module, the low-orbit space station to be part of its Tiangong space station.
ii.China will carry out two more missions including the Shenzhou-15 crewed spaceship and bringing the Shenzhou-14 crew back to Earth, after the launch of the Tianzhou-5 cargo craft
About Tianzhou-5
i.The Tianzhou-5 is a fully sealed cargo spacecraft that carried a total of 6.7 tonnes of supplies, including around 5.2 tonnes of life supplies and equipment along with 1.4 tonnes of propellant, sufficient to serve the demand of China’s future mission Shenzhou-15.
ii.Tianzhou-5 has expanded its storage capability with 8 storage tanks compared to previous models which had only four tanks.

NASA Partners with Pratt & Whitney for Developing Low-emission Aviation Engine TechnologyNASA partners Pratt & Whitney to develop low-emission aviation engine tech

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has awarded the cost-share contract to Pratt & Whitney with a total value of USD 13.1 million under the project Hybrid Thermally Efficient Core (HyTEC) to advance new combustor designs for small core engines to revolutionise air travel and combat climate change.
About HyTEC Project:
i.The HyTEC project is part of NASA’s Sustainable Flight National Partnership, which aims to improve aircraft engine combustors to ensure the future of commercial flight is cleaner, more efficient and sustainable.

  • It also supports the aviation industry’s goal to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 2050 with various new innovations.

iii.The HyTEC project will develop highly efficient jet engines to support the future of sustainable aviation by using less energy, running on renewable fuels instead of fossil fuels, and enabling electrified propulsion for single-aisle commercial aircraft.
About the partnership:
i.Through the HyTEC project, Pratt & Whitney will demonstrate the compatibility of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) with advanced combustors for small-core engines.
ii.The project also includes developing and testing fuel and air mixers for optimal efficiency and measuring the emissions along with noise emitted using Jet A fuel and high blends of SAF.
iii.Background – In October 2021, NASA awarded Pratt & Whitney with two contracts under the HyTEC project to develop technologies for a high-pressure turbine which includes next-generation ceramic matrix composites (CMC) materials, that are capable of operating at higher temperatures.

  • Both Pratt & Whitney and NASA have already led to several key advances in sustainable propulsion technologies including low-pressure-ratio fans, low-emissions combustors and high-performance hot sections.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav launches ESIC Online Maternity Benefit Claim Portal

On 10th November 2022, Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister of Labour & Employment, launched the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation’s (ESIC) Online Maternity Benefit Claim Portal during the commemoration of the 102nd birth anniversary of Dattopant Thengadi at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.

  • Maternity Benefit is provided to insured women in the form of cash benefits in the event of certain situations, such as advanced pregnancy, after delivery, or in the tragic event of confinement or miscarriage, and who meet the eligibility standards.
  • ESIC pays a maternity payment of 100% of the salary to the insured woman for 26 weeks to compensate for income loss after childbirth.
  • During the fiscal year (FY) 2021-2022, 18.69 lakh women recipients received maternity benefits of Rs 37.37 crore.

OBITUARY

Renowned Indian Mathematician, Padma Shri Awardee Dr RL Kashyap Passed Away

On 11th November 2022, Padma Shri Awardee Dr Rangasami Lakshminarayan Kashyap, renowned Indian Mathematician and Professor, passed away at the age of 84 in Gubbalala (Bengaluru), Karnataka.
About RL Kashyap:
i. Rangasami Lakshmi Narayan Kashyap was born on 28th March 1938 in Mysore, Karnataka.
ii. He was an Indian applied mathematician and a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University, United States of America (USA) and also the Director of the Sri Aurobindo Kapali Sastry Institute of Vedic Culture.
iii. He has published over 250 advanced research papers in international journals.
iv. His doctoral work “Ho-Kashyap Algorithms” is studied as text in several universities across the globe.
v. He made an immense contribution to the field of study of Vedas. He has also translated all four Vedas, a total of over 25,000 shlokas (verse, proverb, hymn or poem), into English in over 18 volumes.
His Awards:
i. RL Kashyap received Padma Shri Award for Literature and Education in 2021.
ii. He has received numerous international awards for his contributions to machine intelligence, including the King-Sun Fu Award, the JC Bose Award, and others.

i. World Pneumonia Day was established under the Stop Pneumonia Initiative by the Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia in 2009 to raise awareness about Pneumonia.
ii. The 1st World Pneumonia Day was observed on 12th November 2009.
Key Points:
i. Every year, globally, pneumonia kills over 7 lakh children under the age of 5, including over 1.53 lakh newborns, who are especially vulnerable to infection.

  • At least one child dies every 45 seconds from pneumonia each day.

ii. Pneumonia accounts for 14% of all deaths of children under 5 years old, killing 740 180 children in 2019.
iii. Countries with the Largest Number of Child Pneumonia Deaths are The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

Public Service Broadcasting Day is annually observed across India on 12th November to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s first and only visit to All India Radio(AIR) in Delhi in 1947.
Public Service Broadcasting Day is also known as Jan Prasaran Diwas.
Background
i.On 12th November 1997, an event was organised at the AIR premises to commemorate the 50 years of Gandhi’s visit to AIR studios.
ii.In 2001, the 12th November was officially declared Public Service Broadcasting Day.

  • The day was conceptualised by Suhas Borker, Convenor, Jan Prasar.
