Union Minister Narayan Rane launched MSME Innovative Scheme & MSME Idea Hackathon 2022Govt launches Innovative Scheme to provide incubation

i.On March 10, 2022, Union Minister Narayan Tatu Rane, Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (M/o MSME) launched the MSME Innovative Scheme (Incubation, Design and IPR) along with the MSME Idea Hackathon 2022.
ii.The scheme is a combination of three existing sub-schemes viz. incubation, design, and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for MSMEs.
iii.The M/o MSME launch MSME Idea Hackathon to invite ideas from MSMEs, innovators and students through host institutes from March 10 to March 24, 2022.

Govt Creates Policy Advocacy Arm for Power and Allied Sectors

Govt creates policy advocacy arm for power and allied sectors

The government has set up a society, the Power Foundation, that is registered under the Societies Act, under the Power Ministry that will act as the top policy advocacy arm for the power and allied sectors which will assist states and businesses with cutting edge research along with developing ideas and solutions for India’s energy transition journey.

  • The society will be chaired by the Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh and the former Power Secretary Sanjiv Nandan Sahai has been appointed as the Director General by a search-cum-selection committee.

India’s Virtual Smart Grid Knowledge Centre in Manesar, Haryana inaugurated by Union Minister RK Singh

India gets first Virtual Smart Grid Knowledge Centre in Manesar new

As a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Programme, Union Minister Raj Kumar Singh, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), and Minister of State (MoS) Krishan Pal Gurjar, Ministry of Power (MOP) virtually launched the India’s Virtual Smart Grid Knowledge Center (Virtual SGKC) and Innovation Park.

  • The Virtual SGKC is located within the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL)/POWERGRID centre in Manesar (Haryana).

Developers:
i.It has been conceptualized and developed by the POWERGRID with support from the MOP, and National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) for demonstration and advancement of frontier smart grid technologies.
ii.The technical assistance is provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Key Points:
i.The Virtual SGKC, which will be one of the leading Centers of Excellence globally, has been developed to foster innovation, entrepreneurship and research in smart grid technologies of power distribution sector.
ii.The platform presently hosts more than 50 solutions from over 30 technology partners across 8 thematic areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, blockchain, etc.
iii.The solutions which are physically present at SGKC premises at Manesar are also hosted on this platform. 

  • This includes Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), smart homes, microgrids, Outage Management System (OMS), etc.

What is a Smart Grid?
Smart Grid is an Electrical Grid with Automation, Communication and IT (Information Technology) systems that can monitor power flows from points of generation to points of consumption. It can control the power flow or curtail the load to match generation in real time.

Bangladesh, India, Nepal finalized Enabling MoU to Implement BBIN MVABangladesh, India, Nepal move ahead on motor vehicle agreement project (1)

i.The nations of India, Bangladesh and Nepal finalized an enabling Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementing the Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicles Agreement (MVA) during a meeting held in New Delhi (Delhi) on March 7-8, 2022.
ii.This MVA aims to boost regional trade and people-to-people connectivity by fostering greater sub-regional cooperation.
iii.The pending ratification of the MVA by Bhutan was finalized.

BIS signs MoU with IIT Roorkee for establishment of its first  ‘BIS Standardization Chair Professor’Bureau of Indian Standards signs MoU with IIT Roorkee for establishment of ‘BIS Standardization Chair Professor’

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R) signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The agreement establishes the BIS Chair Professor in the field of Standardization and Conformity Assessment. 

  • This is the first Standardization Chair of BIS in an educational institution and will also provide financial support to IIT-R.

Key points:
i.The BIS Standardization Chair will work in  research and development, teaching and training with regards to  Standardization and Conformity Assessment.
ii.It will provide leadership in areas of civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, earthquake engineering, water resources management, sustainable energy projects, biotechnology in medical sciences etc.
iii.It will also  promote the development & Innovation in  Indian Standards in course curricula of IIT Roorkee and also facilitate  short term courses on standardization in IIT Roorkee.

Indian Railways’ 1st GCT commissioned in Asansol Division of Eastern Railway

Indian Railways' 1st Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal

Under the Prime Minister’s GatiShakti initiative,and the Ministry of Railways policy on ‘Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal’ (GCT) , the Asansol Division of Eastern Railway commissioned private siding of Maithan Power at Thaparnagar, Jharkhand.

  • This is the first such GCT commissioned by Indian Railways since publication of GCT policy in December 2021. 

Highlights: 
i.In 2009 the Maithan Power Project was started in Jharkhand  and  the power generation was started in  2011. 

  • Till now the requirement of coal to the power project was being made through a road which is expected to convert into 120 inward coal rakes per month. 

 ii.The new power project will increase the earnings of Indian Railways upto  Rs 11 crore per month.

i.Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi launched the GatiShakti initiative in 2021.
ii.It is Rs. 100 lakh crore  ‘National Master Plan for Multi-Modal Connectivity’ project.

AIM, NITI Aayog & KidEx Partners to Leverage IKIGAI to Host AIM’s flagship ProgramsAtal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog & KidEx collaborate to promote innovation & entrepreneurship

Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), an initiative under NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India), has partnered with KidEx Venture Private Limited(KidEx) to leverage KidEx’s IKIGAI, a technology platform to host AIM’s flagship programs like “Tinkerpreneur”, “ATL Marathon” and other similar Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) related challenges.
The programs will be available to more than 1 Crore school students on the AIM network across India. 

  • The technology platform of KidEx, has been evaluated over the last 1 year, during which more than 1 lakh students from around 1500 schools have used the platform and found it convenient & engaging resulting in a Net Promoter Score of more than 85%.

Note: KidEx is a Startup India recognized company, started by alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur & Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Calcutta. 
Features of the Partnership:
i.Under this partnership, AIM and KidEx will outreach more than 10 lakhs young learners and enable them to get exposure to the AIM proprietary programs on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in a timeframe of 2 years. 
ii.Under this partnership, KidEx will provide an enhanced experience for our innovators, teachers and mentors. 
iii.The smart and intuitive technology solutions of KidEx will augment the innovation experience for ATLs. 
iv.KidEx will be adopting 100 schools under the ATL initiative and provide free licenses for KidEx’s flagship products for implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

  • The flagship products of KidEx, launched in 2020, aims to enable the holistic development of children through experiential learning of age-appropriate activities and the discovery of the innate potential of children. 

Events under the partnership:
i.The first engagement of the partnership will be held on 1st May 2022, with AIM Bootcamp, ATL Tinkerpreneur for students of more than 9600 schools.
ii.The 9-week virtual Bootcamp will equip students with 21st century digital and entrepreneurship skills.
iii.The event is available for free for students of ATL network schools in classes 6 to 12.

ISRO will select 150 students for its YUVIKA ProgrammeISRO to pick 150 students for 'Young Scientist Programme'

A  special programme for school students “YUva VIgyani KAryakram” (YUVIKA) or “Young Scientist Programme” is organized  by the  Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It will provide basic knowledge related to space technology, space science and space applications to young students, especially rural areas students.
Objective- 
To create awareness about the emerging trends in science and technology amongst the young minds.
Highlights:
i.Under the YUVIKA-2022 residential programme, 150 students who are studying in Class IX as on March 1, 2022 will get selected across India from different schools. ISRO outlined  the programme to “catch them young”.
ii.It will start  from May 16 2022 to May 28 2022 (two weeks) and the program include talks, experience-sharing by eminent scientists, experimental demonstration, facility and lab visits etc.
iii.It will also encourage more students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based research /career.
The programme will be held at five ISRO centres —

NW2 & NW1 Connected via IBP Route: India Completes 1st Voyage, MV Lal Bahadur Shastri with Foodgrains from Patna docks at Pandu
Brahmaputra (NW2) gets connected with Ganga (NW1) via Indo Bangladesh Protocol RouteOn 6th March 2022, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister(CM) of Assam received the self-propelled vessel MV Lal Bahadur Shastri, carrying a total of 200 MT of food grains for the Food Corporation of India (FCI), which completed the maiden pilot run from Patna to Pandu via Bangladesh, in Guwahati, Assam. 

  • Route of the maiden voyage:  The MV Lal Bahadur Shastri set sail from Patna on National Waterway-1(NW1) (river Ganga) and passed through Bhagalpur, Manihari, Sahibganj, Farakka, Tribeni, Kolkata, Haldia, Hemnagar; Indo Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) Route through Khulna, Narayanganj, Sirajganj, Chilmari and National.

Chief Minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP of Lok Sabha for Guwahati, Queen Oja joined the celebration along with Sanjay Bandopadhyay, Chairma, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

TPL  Becomes the World’s First LAB Manufacturing company with BIS Certification

Tamilnadu Petroproducts Ltd. (TPL) became World’s first linear alkylbenzene (LAB) manufacturing company to receive the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification from the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

  • The certificate is in line with the requirements of the Linear Alkyl Benzene (Quality Control) Order, 2021.

DefExpo 2022 Postponed Due to Logistics Problems

The 12th edition of DefExpo-2022 , Naval & Homeland Security Systems Exhibition, India’s flagship defence exhibition, which was proposed to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from 10th to 14th March 2022, has been postponed.The reason for the postpone is the logistics problems experienced by participants, and the new dates will be announced later.
The Defence Exhibition Organisation (DEO), under the Ministry of Defence, is the organiser of the exhibition. 
The theme of DefExpo 2022 is “India-The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub”. 

  • A bilateral military industry conference with Russia and an African defence ministers conclave were planned for the event. More than 900 companies from 55 nations have confirmed their participation in DefExpo 2022.

CRISIL Retains India’s GDP Growth at 7.8% in FY23Crisil retains GDP growth forecast at 7.8 per cent for 2022-23

CRISIL Ratings Limited, a domestic rating agency and a subsidiary of CRISIL Limited has reiterated its december 2021 forecast of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at 7.8% for FY23 despite the Russia-Ukraine war.
Highlights:
i.The war is pushing the oil and commodity prices upwards which affects global growth and also India’s growth. The Brent crude has been traded as high as USD 139 per barrel and as low as USD 105 per barrel recently.
ii.CRISIL also highlighted that the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation will be at 5.4% in FY23 if the price of crude oil averages USD 85-90per barrel.
iii.The higher price of crude oil will widen India’s Current Account Deficit (CAD) to 2.2 % in FY23 (i.e.) $10 increase in prices of crude oil increases the CAD to GDP ratio by about 40 basis points.
Additional Info- Morgan Stanley has lowered its GDP growth forecast for India by 50 basis points to 7.9 per cent for FY23 and has raised the CPI inflation forecast to 6 per cent.

Former Finance & Revenue Secretary AB Pandey appointed as NFRA Chairperson Former Revenue Secretary AB Pandey appointed as NFRA Chairperson

The Government of India (GoI) has appointed Ajay Bhushan Pandey, former Finance & Revenue secretary of India, Ministry of Finance, as new Chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA).
i.The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge or till he attains the age of 65 years.
ii.The ACC has also appointed 2 full-time members for NFRA,

  • Praveen Kumar Tiwari, former Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General, a retired Indian Audit and Accounts Service official.  
  • Smita Jhingran, Principal Director General at Central Board of Direct Taxes, an Indian Revenue Service officer.

About Ajay Bhushan Pandey:
i.He was the Finance Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Government of India from March 2020 – February 2021.
ii.He was the Revenue Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Government of India from November 2018 – February 2021.
iii. Prior to becoming the Finance & Revenue Secretary of India, he was acting as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) from September 2015 – October 2019.
iv.As Finance Secretary of India and CEO of UIDAI, he was credited with executing three major reforms in India – Aadhaar, GST, and Direct Tax reforms.
v.After retirement he headed a three-member committee constituted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJ&E) to review the criteria for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservations.

An independent regulatory body set up by the Government of India as envisaged under the provisions of Section 132, Companies Act, 2013 to oversee the quality of accounting and auditing standards in India.

  • Present Chairperson –  Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairperson of Competition Commission of India (CCI) – given additional charge as Chairperson to NFRA in October 2021, till a new appointment to the post is made.

UCO Bank becomes a stakeholder of IDRCLUCO Bank to acquire 3 pc stake in debt resolution company IDRCL

On March 9, 2022 – the UCO Bank became one of the stakeholders of India Debt Resolution Company Limited (IDRCL) by acquiring 3% of stake.According to the bank, its holding of 3% in IDRCL amounts to Rs.1.50 crores, requires no approval and the agreement is in accordance with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.

  • The acquisition will be completed within 10 working days from the date of agreement.
  • Post investment, UCO Bank will hold up to 3% of equity shares in IDRCL.

About India Debt Resolution Company Limited (IDRCL):
IDRCL is a service company/operational entity which will manage the asset and engage market professionals and turnaround experts.Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Public FIs will hold a maximum of 49% stake and the rest will be with private sector lenders.
Background:
i.The Government of India (GoI) suggested setting up a Public Sector Asset Rehabilitation Agency (PARA) in the Economic Survey 2016-17 in view of rising Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) in banks and declining credit growth.
ii.The Public Sector Enterprises can transfer their stressed assets to the agency clearing up their books.Following this, the Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman proposed for the formation of Bad Bank in her Budget Speech on 1st February 2021.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World cup 2022 ‘Rifle and pistol’ took place at Cairo, Egypt, from 26 february 2022 till 8 March 2022. Indian shooters have topped the medals tally with a total of 7 medals.

  • India Led the medal tally with 7 medals including 4 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze.Norway Secured the Second position and France secured the third.

Indian Fast-Bowler Sreesanth Retires From Indian Domestic (First class and All formats) Cricket

Indian fast bowler, Shanthakumaran Nair Sreesanth has retired from Indian domestic (first class and all formats) cricket. Being born in Kerala, Sreesanth has represented India in 27 – International (Intl) Tests, 53 – One Day Internationals (ODI) and 10 – Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) and secured a total of 169 Intl wickets. Sreesanth was also on the winning sides of 2007 T20I World Cup and 2011 International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup.
i.Sreesanth is the first fast bowler from Kerala to take a Hat-Trick in Ranji Trophy games 2004-05.
ii.He has also played for Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Rajasthan Royals in Indian Premier League (IPL).

Labour Ministry Launches e-Book of NCS Project; Bhupendra Yadav releases Book titled ‘Role of Labour in India’s Development’

Dr Shashank Goel, Additional Secretary/Director General of Employment, Ministry of Labour and Employment(MoLE) launched an e-Book touching upon the journey of National Career Service (NCS) at Shram Shakti Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi. 

  • The e-book was launched during the Iconic Week celebration held from 7th to 13th March 2022 as a part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
  • The e-book provides a glimpse of major achievements and success stories of the NCS portal since its inception in 2015.

About National Career Service (NCS): 
i.National Career Service (NCS) is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Labour and Employment implemented as a Mission Mode Project for the transformation of the National Employment Service to provide a variety of employment-related services like job matching, career counselling, vocational guidance, information on skill development courses, internships etc.
ii.3 aspects of NCS are, 

  • NCS portal – One Stop destination for Relevant Job.
  • Career Centers – Hubs of career-related services.
  • Call Center – Toll-free number for queries (1800-425-1514).

NCS portal: 
i.The NCS portal was launched by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on 20th July 2015 to provide employment-related services digitally
ii.The scope of the portal is expanding to provide more and more services to the youth.
Key Points:
Under the NCS project, more than 94 lakh vacancies have been mobilised on the NCS Portal and more than 2 lakh Jobseekers have got jobs through job fairs organised under the NCS Project.  
Labour Minister Bhupendra Yadav Releases Book Titled ‘Role of Labour in India’s Development’
Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, released a book titled “Role of Labour in India’s Development” in New Delhi, Delhi. The book is published by the V V Giri National Labour Institute(VVGNLI), an autonomous body of the MoLE, as a part of the ‘Iconic Week’ of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. 

  • The book features 12 articles written by eminent academicians and practitioners on the contribution of labour in the development journey of India.

Justice Vipin Sanghi named Acting Chief Justice of Delhi HC

The President of India has appointed Justice Vipin Sanghi, the senior-most Judge of the Delhi High Court (HC) as its Acting Chief Justice according to Article 223 of the Constitution of India.The Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) issued a notification about his appointment on March 11, 2022.

  • The incumbent Chief Justice of Delhi HC, Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel retires on his 62nd birthday i.e March 12, 2022.
  • Justice Vipin Sanghi will perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court with effect from March 13, 2022.
  • He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on May 29, 2006 and was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on February 11, 2008.

Note:  Article 223 of the Indian Constitution: “Appointment of Acting Chief Justice

  • When the office of Chief Justice of a High Court is vacant or when any such Chief Justice is, by reason of absence or otherwise, unable to perform the duties of his office, the duties of the office shall be performed by such one of the other Judges of the Court as the President may appoint for the purpose.

About Appointment of Chief Justices of High Courts:
i.The Chief Justices of High Courts, other than the High Court of Delhi are appointed by the President of India, as provided under Article 217 of the Constitution, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India and the Governor of the State.
ii.The Chief Justice of the High Court of Delhi is appointed by the President of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
iii.The retirement age of High Court (HC) Judges is 62 years, whereas the retirement age of Supreme Court (SC) Judges is 65 years in India.
