India & Egypt Begins 3rd Joint Military Exercise ‘Cyclone 2025’ in RajasthanJoint military exercise ‘Cyclone 2025’ between India and Egypt begins in RajasthanThe 3rd edition of the India-Egypt joint military exercise ‘Cyclone 2025’ commenced at the Maharajan Field Range, Rajasthan, aiming to enhance defence cooperation and improve special forces interoperability in desert conditions. The exercise will run for 14 days from February 10-23, 2025.

  • Exercise ‘Cyclone 2025’ also aims to improve cooperation between the two armies and strengthen their relationship by holding discussions and practicing military drills together.

Background:
i.Exercise Cyclone is a joint military exercise conducted between India and Egypt since 2023.
ii.This exercise is aligned with Chapter VII of the United Nations(UN) Charter.
iii.The 2nd edition of the exercise was conducted at Anshas, Egypt from 22nd January to 1st February 2024.
About Cyclone 2025:
i.Focus: The joint Military exercise will focus on combat in urban areas and rescuing hostages.
ii.Participants: The Indian Army is represented by the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), while the Egyptian contingent consists of the Egyptian Commando Squadron and the Egyptian Airborne Platoon.
iii.Motto: “Together we train, together we excel,” is the motto of Cyclone 2025.
iv.Operation: It will include counter-terrorism operations, raids, reconnaissance, and other specialized missions, along with special forces skills such as sniping, combat free fall, surveillance, reconnaissance, and target designation.
v.Features: The exercise will feature military demonstrations and discussions, with training on Improvised Explosive Devices (IED)s, countering them, and providing first aid in combat.
Note: ‘Exercise Desert Warrior’ is another joint exercise carried out by the air forces of India and Egypt.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi Announced India Achieved Historic Milestone of 100 GW Solar Power CapacityIndia Achieves Historic Milestone of 100 GW Solar Power CapacityIn February 2025, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that India has achieved a historic milestone of surpassing 100 Giga Watt (GW) installed solar energy capacity. With this, India consolidates its position as a global leader in Renewable Energy (RE).

  • This achievement reflects India’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future and marks a major step toward realizing its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030 set by the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

i.As per MNRE, India’s solar power sector has witnessed an exponential increase of 3450% in capacity over the last 10 years, increasing from 2.82 GW (in 2014) to 100 GW (in 2025).
ii.As of January 31, 2025, total installed solar energy capacity of India stands at 100.33 GW, with 84.10 GW under implementation and an additional 47.49 GW under tendering.
iii.Solar energy emerged as the key contributor to India’s RE growth, representing 47% of the total installed RE capacity.

  • Top 5 performing Indian states, contributing significantly to India’s total utility-scale solar installations are: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu (TN), Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh (MP).

India Introduces New HS Code for GI-Recognised Rice Varieties India introduces new HS code to allow exports of GI-recognised rice varietiesOn February 1, 2025, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance (MoF) proposed an amendment to the Customs Tariff Act to assign Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes to Geographical Indication (GI) recognized rice varieties during the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 (FY26). The HSN code is a numerical classification used in global trade.

  • This amendment introduces specific Harmonized System (HS) codes for the export of rice varieties recognised under the GI registry.
  • This marks the first instance globally of assigning HS codes to GI-tagged rice, aiming to streamline exports and ensure traceability.

Details of the Amendment:
i.The newly introduced HS codes are:1006-30-11 for Parboiled rice and 1006-30-91 for White rice.
ii.These codes pertain to rice varieties that have received GI recognition, facilitating their export without the need for special notifications from the MoF.
iii.As of March 2020, the Indian Patent Office has granted GI tags to 20 rice varieties, including:
Navara, Palakkadan Matta, Pokkali, Wayanad Jeerakasala, Wayanad Gandhakasala, Kalanamak, Kaipad, Ajara Ghansal, Ambemohar, Joha, Gobindobog, Tulapanji, Katarni, Chokuwa,Bhadara Chinoor, Mushqbudji, Marcha, Khaw Tai (Khamti), Lal Chawl and Kalonunia.
iv.Subsequently, between April 2023 and March 2024, additional varieties such as Bhadara Chinoor, Mushqbudji, Marcha, Khaw Tai (Khamti), Uttarakhand’s Lal Chawl, Kalonunia, and Koraput Kalajeera received GI tags.

  • Andaman Karen Musley Rice Musley rice, grown by the Karen community in the Andaman Island,recently received GI tag.

  • HS assigns specific 6-digit codes to various commodities, facilitating international trade.

ii.The HS is governed by “The International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System.”

MoA&FW Revised Market Intervention Scheme GuidelinesGovernment revises Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) guidelinesIn February 2025, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) has revised guidelines for the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). As per the revised norms, the Government of India (GoI) has made MIS a component of the integrated scheme of Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay SanraksHan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA).
i.It has been mandated that MIS will be implemented only when there is a minimum reduction of 10% in the existing market price as compared to the last normal year.
ii.As per the revised guidelines, procurement limit of crops under MIS has been increased from the existing 20% to 25%.

MoD inks Rs 642 crore contract with BEL for 28 EON-51 systems for IN
In February 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked a Rs.642.17 crore contract with Bengaluru(Karnataka) based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of 28 EON-51 Electro-Optical Fire Control Systems (EOFCS) for the Indian Navy(IN).

  • This agreement was signed in New Delhi(Delhi), aligns with the ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured))’ category, emphasizing indigenous design, development, and manufacturing.
  • The EON-51 systems are slated for installation on 11 New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) and three Cadet Training Ships (CTS).

i.The EON-51 is a fully indigenously developed system, designed to bolster the Indian Navy’s operational efficiency by enabling the search, detection, and classification of all types of targets through its electro optical and thermal imagers.
ii.These advanced systems enhance the IN’s operational capabilities by providing superior search, detection, classification, and engagement of targets through state-of-the-art electro-optical and thermal imaging devices.

IN Chiefs’ Conclave 2025 for future of warfare & maritime strategy
The Indian Navy (IN) Chiefs’ Conclave 2025 took place at Nausena Bhawan, the IN headquarters in New Delhi (Delhi) from February 8 to 9, 2025.

  • The conclave gathers eight Former Chief of Naval Staffs (CNS) alongside the current CNS, Dinesh Kumar Tripathi.
  • It took place as the IN works towards full self-reliance by 2047, focusing on strengthening its capabilities in the Indian Ocean region (IOR).

About IN Chief’s Conclave 2025:
i.It aimed to leverage the knowledge and collective experience of former CNS while also providing updates on the latest developments and policy initiatives of IN.

  • The former CNS were briefed on an operational update, covering policy initiatives, advancements in technology, materials, and operational logistics, as well as perspective plans.

ii.An exclusive session, Manthan, was held to discuss key issues, promoting an open exchange of ideas on future warfare, maritime strategy, shifting geopolitical dynamics, and evolving HR frameworks.
iii.It reaffirms the IN’s commitment to continuity, drawing on past leadership’s wisdom while shaping the future of India’s maritime power.
iv.A book titled “Legacy of Leadership: Naval Chiefs through Time” was released during the Conclave, showcasing the inspiring journeys of former CNSs.

  • It features personal stories, rare photos, and firsthand accounts, this “collector’s edition” provides a unique insight into their leadership.

Highlights of RBI 6th Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy for FY 25Highlights of RBI's 6th Bi-monthly Monetary Policy of FY25The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) met from February 5 to 7, 2025 and released the 6th bi-monthly monetary policy for the financial year 2024-25 (FY 25).  This was the first meeting chaired by Sanjay Malhotra after assuming charge as RBI Governor on December 11, 2024.  This session marked the 53rd meeting of the MPC and was the last one for FY 25.
Key Highlights:
i.The committee unanimously decided to:
Reduce the policy repo rate under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.25%, from 6.5 % effective immediately.
ii.Consequently, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate was adjusted to 6.00%, while the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate were set at 6.50%.
iii.RBI projected real GDP growth for FY 26 for Quarter 1 (Q1 April-June 2025) expected at 6.7%, Q2 (July-September 2025) at 7.0% and Q3 and Q4 at 6.5% each.
iv.RBI Projects Retail Inflation at 4.2% for FY 26, Retains 4.8% Forecast for FY 25
v.RBI to Introduce ‘bank.in’ and ‘fin.in’ Domains to Enhance Cybersecurity

Angel One AMC Launched India’s 1st Nifty Total Market ETF & Index FundAngel One MF launches India’s first Nifty Total Market ETF and Index FundIn February 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Angel One Asset Management Company (AMC) Limited, wholly-owned subsidiary of Angel One Limited, has launched two New Fund Offerings (NFOs) namely, Angel One Nifty Total Market ETF, which is India’s 1st Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) and the Angel One Nifty Total Market Index Fund. 

  • The funds are passively managed; aim to monitor the performance of the Nifty Total Market Total Return Index (TRI), delivering a low-cost and efficient investment strategy.
  • Both these NFO of the scheme were opened on February 10 2025 for subscription and will close on February 21, 2025.

i.Both formats aim to track 750 stocks from the Nifty 500 and Nifty Microcap 250 indices across 22 sectors, including large (60%), mid (19%), small (10%) and microcap segments (4%), accounting 93% of India’s total market capitalization.
ii.The NFO is priced at Rs 10 per unit with no exit load, and minimum investment amount will be Rs 1,000 with subsequent investments allowed in multiples of Re 1.

Infibeam Avenues’ RediffPay Secures TPAP License from NPCI to Enter India’s UPI Ecosystem
In February 2025, Infibeam Avenues Limited, a leading Indian fintech company headquartered in Gandhinagar(Gujarat) , has announced that its subsidiary, Rediff.com India Ltd., has obtained a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) license from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for its digital payment platform, RediffPay.

  • This approval enables RediffPay to offer Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services, positioning Infibeam as a new entrant in India’s consumer-facing digital payments sector

i.Axis Bank as Payment System Provider (PSP) : Axis Bank Limited will serve as the PSP bank for RediffPay, facilitating UPI-based transactions. This partnership aims to ensure secure, real-time inter-bank payments, leveraging Axis Bank’s infrastructure and Infibeam’s fintech expertise
ii.Strategic Acquisition of Rediff.com:The license follows Infibeam’s acquisition of a 54% stake in Rediff.com in August 2024 for Rs.500 million (USD 5.7 million).

RBI Imposes Rs.35.60 Lakh Penalty on Federal Bank & Karur Vysya Bank for Regulatory Non-Compliance
In February 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalties totaling Rs.35.60 lakh on Federal Bank Limited and Karur Vysya Bank Limited for non-compliance with specific regulatory directions.
Reason for penalty.
i.Federal Bank has been fined Rs.27.30 lakh for not complying with RBI directions on interest rates of deposits.An inspection revealed that the bank had opened certain savings deposit accounts in the names of entities that were not eligible to hold such accounts.
ii.Karur Vysya Bank has been penalized Rs.8.30 lakh for not complying with RBI directions on the loan system for bank credit delivery. The bank did not ensure that the outstanding loan amounts met the specified percentage of the sanctioned working capital limits for certain borrowers.
iii.Legal Framework and Penalty Imposition:The penalties were imposed under the provisions of Section 47A(1)(c) read with Section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The RBI conducted statutory inspections and reviews of compliance reports for both banks.

SBI MF expanded its stake in Axis Bank to 5.0238%
In February, 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra) based SBI Mutual Fund (MF) managed by SBI Funds Management Limited (SBIFML) expanded its stake by 0.036% in Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Axis Bank Limited. This expansion, made through open market operation (OMO), amounts to 11,44,160 equity shares.
i.Before this acquisition, SBI MF held a 4.9878% stake in Axis Bank, equivalent to 15,44,18,049 shares
ii.After the acquisition, SBI Mutual Fund (SBI MF) stake in Axis Bank was raised to 5.0238%, equivalent to 15,55,32,209 shares.

Pakistan Partners with China for Chang’e-8 Lunar Mission in 2028Pakistan Joins China's Chang'e-8 Lunar Mission For Exploring Moon's South PoleOn February 5, 2025, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) of Pakistan and the China National Space Administration (CNSA), China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to include Pakistan’s first lunar rover in China’s Chang’e-8 mission, scheduled for 2028.

  • The Chang’e-8 mission aims to explore the Moon’s south pole, a region of scientific interest due to its potential resources and unique environment.
  • This mission is a precursor to the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project, which China plans to establish in the 2030s.

About China’s Chang’e-8 mission:
i.Chang’e-8 is a planned Chinese lunar mission set for 2028, focusing on exploring the Moon’s south pole.
ii.International Collaboration: Pakistan’s SUPARCO will contribute a 35-kilogram (kg) (440 Ib) rover to the mission.
iii.Objective: The mission aims to study lunar soil composition, radiation levels, plasma properties, and test new technologies for sustainable human presence on the Moon.
iv.Payload: The lander will carry 10 scientific payloads, including landing and topography cameras, a seismometer, a moon-based Earth radiometer, a multispectral imager, a soft X-ray telescope, and instruments for ecosystem and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) studies.
v.Landing Sites: Preliminary landing sites for Chang’e-8 include regions around Leibnitz Beta, Amundsen crater, Cabeus crater, and the Shackleton-de Gerlache Ridge at the lunar south pole.
Note: 
In May 2024, Pakistan launched the iCube Qamar CubeSat satellite aboard China’s Chang’e-6 mission, which successfully entered lunar orbit.

Para Archery Asia Cup 2025: India Tops with Six Gold MedalsPara Archery Asia Cup India end campaign with six gold medalsIndia concluded its participation in the ‘2025 Para Archery Asia Cup’ in Bangkok, Thailand with an outstanding performance of securing 6 Gold Medals and topping the medal tally.

  • India’s Para-Archers bagged a total of 12 medals in the competition: 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze.
  • India’s Para Archery contingent, consisting of 27 members, participated in the  Asia Para Cup – World Ranking Archery Tournament 2025 features 11 events which was held from February 2-11, 2025.

Highlights:
i.Sarita Kumari secured gold in the Women’s Compound Open category, narrowly defeating Nur Syahidah Alim from Singapore with a score of 143-142.
ii.Shyam Sundar Swami triumphed in the Men’s Compound Open, overcoming Ken Swagumilang from Indonesia with a score of 143-141 to win India’s sixth and final gold.
He also won the silver
iii.Rakesh Kumar earned bronze in the Men’s Compound Open following a shoot-off victory against Wiro Julin from Malaysia after both archers scored 140.
iv.Pooja Jatyan fell short in the Women’s Recurve Open final, losing 6-0 to Zina Lavrinc of Slovakia (Slovak Republic), settling for silver.
v.Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh claimed bronze in the Men’s Recurve Open, defeating Nurfaizal Hamzah with a 6-2 scoreline.
vi.Adil Mohamed Nazir Ansari secured a bronze in the Men’s W1 (Recurve/Compound) with a 120-116 win over Yung Man Tai from Hong Kong, China.

i.Para-archery classification ensures fair competition by grouping athletes based on the severity of their impairments. This system allows athletes with different disabilities to compete equitably.
ii.Para-archery features 3 primary classification categories:

  • Recurve Open: For athletes with impairments affecting one side or either the top or bottom half of their bodies, typically maintaining core muscle function.
  • Compound Open: Similar to Recurve Open, this category allows athletes to use compound bows.
  • W1: For athletes with more severe impairments affecting at least three limbs, the torso, and both upper and lower body function.

International Day of the Arabian Leopard 2025 – February 10International Day of the Arabian LeopardThe United Nations (UN’s) International Day of the Arabian Leopard is observed annually on February 10 worldwide to raise awareness for the conservation of the critically endangered Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr).

  • 10 February 2025 marks the 2nd observance of International Day of the Arabian Leopard
  • The UN aims to restore the Arabian leopard as a flagship species for conservation and sustainability in its native region, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity for maintaining healthy and resilient ecosystems.
  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the Arabian leopard as Critically Endangered on its Red List.

Background:
i.Arabian Leopard Day was first launched by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) in 2022.
ii.In June 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously adopted a resolution 77/295 designating February 10 as the International Day of the Arabian Leopard to support RCU and its conservation partners.
iii.The first International Day of the Arabian Leopard was observed on February 10, 2024.
Significance:
i.This day promotes public involvement in efforts to restore leopard populations and other endangered species, benefiting ecosystems.
ii.It also encourages individuals to learn about and contribute to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).
Arabian Leopard:
i.The Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) is a critically endangered subspecies found in the Arabian Peninsula and is the largest wild cat in the region.
ii.It is one of the smallest leopard subspecies, with male’s average weight of 30-40 kilogram (kg) and female’s 25-35 kg in weight.
iii.Its fur is pale and buff-colored, featuring small, closely spaced rosettes.
iv.It is found only in a few isolated pockets of habitat in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
v.Threats: Urbanization, farming, overgrazing by livestock, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade
vi.Conservation efforts: Habitat protection, restoration of natural prey populations, public education to reduce human-leopard conflict, stronger law enforcement, and active management of remaining populations are essential.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science – February 11 2025The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS) is observed annually on February 11 across the globe to highlight the importance of promoting equal access and participation for women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The day also emphasizes gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls within the scientific community.

  • February 11 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the IDWGIS and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

Note: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN-Women lead the celebration, in collaboration with numerous institutions and civil society organizations dedicated to advancing women and girls in science.
Background:
i.On December 20, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on science, technology, and innovation for development.

World Unani Day 2025- February 11 World Unani Day - February 11 2025World Unani Day is observed annually on February 11 across the globe to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mohammad Ajmal Khan, also known as Hakim Ajmal Khan, a prominent social reformer and renowned Unani scholar. He is widely recognized as the pioneer of Unani medicine in India.

  • This day serves to promote the Unani system of medicine, highlighting its unique principles and strengths.
  • The theme for World Unani Day 2025 is “Innovations in Unani Medicine for Integrative Health Solutions-A Way Forward“. 

Background:
i.In recognition of Hakim Ajmal Khan’s contributions to the advancement of Unani medicine, the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy), Government of India (GoI), designated his birth anniversary (11th February) as World Unani Day.
ii.The inaugural World Unani Day was celebrated on 11th February 2017 at the Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM) in Hyderabad, Telangana.

  • The theme of SID 2025 is “Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online.”

Background:
i.In 2004, SID was originally launched by the European Union (EU) SafeBorders project and was later adopted by the Insafe network, a European Network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs) in 2005
ii.SID is organised by the Insafe network and INHOPE (the International Association of Internet Hotlines) on behalf of the European Commission, as part of the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL).
iii.The SID was first observed on 6 February 2004 and was celebrated in 14 countries, including 13 EU countries and Australia.
