Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah E-Launches Onboarding of Cooperatives On GeM PortalUnion Minister Amit Shah e-launches onboarding of cooperatives on GeM portal

On August 9, 2022, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Cooperation, e-launched the onboarding of cooperatives on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal in New Delhi, Delhi. The programme was organized by the Ministry of Cooperation, the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI), and GeM.

  • A total of 589 cooperatives have been selected as being eligible for onboarding on GeM.

Significance
i. On August 9, 2022, another historic day in India took place, especially for the cooperative sector, as cooperative societies in India were granted access to GeM.
ii.According to the Gandhian principles embodied in the Indian Constitution’s Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP),Article 43 states that: The State shall endeavour to promote cottage industries on an individual or co-operative basis in rural areas.
Key Developments in the Cooperative Sector
i. On June 1, 2022, the Union Cabinet approved the decision allowing cooperatives to be registered as buyers on the GeM platform.
ii.All qualified cooperatives with a turnover and deposits of Rs. 100 crore would be able to place orders on the GeM portal in the first phase.

Paytm Partners with Piramal Finance to Offer LoansPaytm partners with Piramal Finance to offer loans

Paytm has partnered with Piramal Capital & Housing Finance Limited(PCHFL) for expanding the distribution of merchant loans to the small cities and towns of India.

  • Merchants can avail loans of up to Rs. 10 lakh with a tenure of 6 months to 24 months.

Process to avail loan:
i.Merchants can avail loan by tapping the ‘Business Loan’ icon on the Paytm for Business App home screen.
ii.Merchants can give consent to give Know Your Customer (KYC) details from the CKYC to complete the loan application process after selecting the loan amount, total payable, daily instalment and tenure.
iii.Personal details like Permanent Account Number (PAN), date of birth, email address will be confirmed and later credit score will be checked for loan eligibility and KYC details will be verified.
iv.After the verification process, the loan amount will be disbursed instantly to the merchant account.

SIDBI & ONDC Ink MoU to Accelerate E-Commerce for Small Industries; Microsoft Joins ONDC to Launch E-Commerce App for IndiaSIDBI, ONDC ink MoU to accelerate e-commerce for small industriesSmall Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI)and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a pioneering initiative to democratize India’s e-commerce ecosystem, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to coordinate the operations of institutions involved in related endeavours.

  • The collaboration aims to transform the landscape of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by integrating them into the ONDC network and accelerating their participation in e-commerce.

Microsoft has joined the ONDC platform as the first significant technology company, with the intention of introducing social e-commerce to the Indian market.

  • Further, it will launch a shopping app in India that would be accessible via the ONDC network and enable customers to discover the best price offered by retailers and sellers.

ONDC is an open protocol network that will allow any network-enabled application to identify and engage in local commerce across categories such as mobility, grocery, food ordering and delivery, hotel booking, and travel, among others.

  • It is an initiative of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI).

SBI Formalises Policy to Finance Makers of Lab-Grown DiamondsIn a first, SBI formalises policy to finance makers of lab-grown diamonds

State Bank of India (SBI) is the first Indian lender to frame a policy to fund lab-grown diamonds which are replicas of the natural diamond stones.

  • Recently factories are being established in Surat, Gujarat to produce lab-grown diamonds and many diamond houses are being relocated from Mumbai, Maharashtra to southern Gujarat.
  • The policy would be largely term loans for machinery import and a part would be disbursed as working capital.

Key Highlights:
i.These lab-grown diamonds are priced at 30-40 percent lower than the natural or earth-mined diamonds.
ii.SBI’s Diamond Bourse branch, the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, Maharashtra and the Commercial branch in Surat, Gujarat have been identified for the business.
iii.The SBIs guidelines on funding to produce lab-grown diamond houses include practices like treating non-fund limits on par with funded limits, critically examining the dependency on single buyer as percentage of annual sales, obtaining business credit report on overseas buyers from agencies like Dun & Bradstreet, and maintaining balance-sheet of buyers.
About the lab-grown Diamonds:
i.The lab-grown Diamonds were 1st produced by General Electric in the 1950s by the synthetic diamond technology that involves recreating the pressure and temperature existing in the bowels of the earth in a lab.
ii.Since the local production capacity for lab-grown stones is not available, Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the apex industry body imported USD 358.3 million worth unpolished lab-grown diamonds in April and June 2022.

HDFC Bank Inks Pact with TReDs Platform M1xchangeHDFC Bank inks pact with TReDs platform M1xchange

Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) Bank has partnered with M1xchange promoted by Mynd Solutions Private Limited in the Trade receivables Discounting System (TReDs) platform with an aim to provide more liquidity to small businesses at competitive interest rates.
About the partnership:
i.HDFC Bank will benefit with shorter turn-around time and lower administrative costs in booking additional new-to-bank (NTB) corporate buyer relationships.
ii.TReDS system is a discounting platform that is regulated by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) enables Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to auction their trade receivables online and borrow funds from the financial institutions which offer loan at the lowest rate of interest.
About M1xchange:
M1xchange TReDS is a digital marketplace to sell the receivables to banks and Non Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) set up under the approval of RBI to facilitate the discounting of invoices and bills of exchange across India.

  • RBI has given approval for M1xchange under the Payment and Settlement System (PSS) Act 2007.

Indian Men’s Football Team(The Blue Tigers) captain Sunil Chhetri was named the 2021-2022 All India Football Federation (AIFF) Men’s Footballer of the Year for the seventh time. In the Women’s Category,  Manisha Kalyan bagged her maiden award for the 2021-22 season.
Highlights:
i.Sunil Chhetri and Manisha Kalyan were nominated as the winners by their respective national team coaches Igor Stimac and Thomas Dennerby.
ii.In other awards, Martina Thokchom was named the 2021-22 Women’s Emerging Footballer of the Year, and Vikram Partap Singh was named 2021-22 Men’s Emerging Footballer of the Year.
Sunil Chhetri:
i.He won the AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year for the first time in 2007 and went on to win the award in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018–19 seasons.
ii.He has scored 84 goals for India in 129 appearances and became the third highest goal scorer among active international football players only behind Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo (117) and Argentina’s Lionel Messi (86).

  • He is also the Player of the Tournament in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup 2021.

Indian American Aarya Walvekar crowned Miss India USA 2022

Indian American Aarya Walvekar from Virginia, The United States of America(USA) has been crowned Miss India USA 2022 at the annual beauty pageant held in New Jersey, USA. 
The 2022 pageant marks the 40th anniversary of the Miss India USA, the longest-running Indian pageant outside of India.

  • 74 contestants representing 30 US states participated in three different pageants – Miss India USA, Mrs India USA and Miss Teen India USA.
  • Akshi Jain from Washington was crowned Mrs India USA 2022 and Tanvi Grover from New York was crowned Miss Teen India USA 2022.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games (CWG) or Birmingham 2022 was held at Birmingham, England (United Kingdom) from July 28 to August 8, 2022. It was an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Games were declared open by Charles, Prince of Wales.
i.England hosted this event for the 3rd time after London 1934 and Manchester 2002.
ii.The UK hosted this for the 7th time after London and Manchester, Cardiff 1958, Edinburgh 1970 and 1986 and Glasgow 2014.
Organizers:
It was organized by the Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games (BOCCG). It was jointly established by the UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Birmingham City Council and the Commonwealth Games England and was structured as a private company limited by guarantee.
India in Commonwealth Games 2022:
In CWG 2022, India stood at 4th position with a total medal tally of 61, consisting of 22 Gold, 16 Silver, and 23 Bronze medals. It was India’s 18th appearance at the event.

  • The Indian contingent was led by two-time Olympic medallist Pusarla Venkata (PV) Sindhu and men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh in the opening ceremony of CWG 2022. 

India Completed 200 CWG Gold Medals; 4th Nation to Achieve This Milestone
i.With this win, India achieved the landmark of 200 gold medals in CWG history, as India’s gold medal tally now stands at 203, which is the 4th best in CWG history.
ii.Australia topped the Gold Medal count in CWG history with 1003 gold medals, followed by England with 773 Gold Medals in second place and Canada in third with 510 Gold Medals.

ICC awards membership status to Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Cote D’IvoireICC awards membership status to Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Cote D'Ivoire

The International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded membership status to three countries –Cambodia and Uzbekistan from Asia, and Cote D’Ivoire from Africa during the ongoing ICC Annual Conference in Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK).
Key points:
i.The three countries were all awarded Associate membership status, taking ICC’s total members to 108 countries, including 96 Associates.
ii.After the introduction of two Asian countries, the total count of Asian countries became 25 while Cote D’Ivoire was introduced as the 21st country from Africa.
The criteria to get ICC Membership
i.The criteria is mentioned in ‘Participation and domestic structures’ of Clause 2.1 (d) of the ICC Membership Criteria.
ii.It includes having in place a proper structure with minimum team requirements for 50-over and 20-over tournaments, aside from clear junior and women’s pathways.
Note-

  • Ukraine’s application for ICC Membership was deferred until cricket activity is able to safely resume within the country.
  • Following Russia’s suspension at the 2021 AGM due to continued non-compliance, ICC has terminated the Membership of Cricket Russia.

i.Uzbekistan- the Cricket Federation of Uzbekistan’s (CFU) women’s cricket plan involving 15 teams playing organised competitions with a pathway programme for their Under-19 and Under-17 players.
ii.Cote d’Ivoire– the Cote d’Ivoire Cricket Federation has a strong grassroots programme and also runs a national league senior men’s competition with eight teams. They have also taken several initiatives to grow women’s cricket, including the appointment of a female Board member to drive this agenda.
iii.Cambodia –the Cricket Association of Cambodia (CAC) was awarded membership subject to the board demonstrating it has a satisfactory women’s pathway in place by the end of the year.

India’s Former International Athlete P V Kamaraj Passed Away

India’s Former International Athlete PV Kamaraj, who was a part of the 4x400m Indian men’s relay team that won bronze at the 1979 Asian Championships in Tokyo, Japan, has passed away in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was born in Pudhukottai, Tamil Nadu.

  • PV Kamaraj has won several medals in national meets including Gold, Silver, and Bronze in 400 hurdles between 1977 and 1980. 
  • He was also a trained coach in the National Institute of Sports (NIS) and coached the Tamil Nadu state team for many years.

‘Bravo Yadav’ Biography of Kargil hero Yogendra Singh Yadav by Deepak Singh

Famous content creator Deepak Singh has authored a new book titled “BRAVO YADAV – Journey of Honorary Captain Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav India’s Youngest Param Vir Chakra Recipient”, a biography of Param Vir Chakra (PVC) Awardee Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav. The book is published by Har-Anand Publications Pvt Ltd. 

  • The book narrates Yogendra Singh Yadav’s courage as a patriot and warrior, surviving the battle of Tiger Hill and being a key stoke towards India’s victory against Pakistan.
  • Yogendra Singh Yadav was born on 10 May 1980 in Uttar Pradesh. 
  • At the age of 19, he was honoured with PVC, India’s highest Military Decoration, for his action during Kargil War 1999. He is the youngest person to be awarded the medal (PVC).
  • PVC, frst introduced on the first Republic Day (26th January 1950), has been awarded 21 times (14 posthumously & 16 for actions in Indo-Pakistani conflicts).

ZSI released new book “Fauna of Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary” & a Survey report 

On 8th August 2022, The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) released a book named “Fauna of Thattekad Bird Sanctuary” and a report on the ‘Threatened animals of Kerala’ the institution receives the knowledge from zoological studies in India. 

  • Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is situated in the Ernakulam district of Kerala.
  • ZSI also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Calicut (Malappuram, Kerala) and the Dr Gafoor Memorial MES Mampad College (Malappuram, Kerala) to exchange scientific and academic knowledge with students and researchers to promote zoological researches through advanced pedagogical techniques.

Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs and Culture unveiled two books titled “Heartfelt- The Legacy of Faith” and “Modi@20: Dreams Meet Delivery” at “Vishwa Sadbhavana” event organised by the National Institute of Design (NID) Foundation at Melbourne in Australia.

  • ‘Heartfelt- The Legacy of Faith’, brought out by NID Foundation, documents Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s belief in the Sikh Guru’s and their teachings
  • ‘Modi@20: Dreams Meet Delivery’ by famed Oncologist in America Dr Bharat Barai, is a compilation of chapters exploring the fundamental transformation of Gujarat and India over the last 20 years. 

Meenakshi Lekhi also specified that PM Modi has undertaken many projects for resurrection, revamping, and reconstruction of different Gurdwaras under the PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme.

Background:
World Lion Day was initiated by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, Co-founders of Big Cat Initiative, and National Geographic in 2013.

  • The first World Lion Day was observed in 2013.

The main objective of  World Lion Day was to safeguard lions in their natural environment and to collaborate on safety measures with local people.

World Biofuel Day 2022 -10th August 2022 World Bio-Fuel Day - August 10 2022

World Biofuel Day is annually observed on 10th August to highlight the importance and significance of non-fossil-fuels or biofuels, the environment-friendly, sustainable, biodegradable and renewable fuels which is produced from animal waste, algae and industrial & Agricultural waste.

  • The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas(MoPNG) initiated the observance of World Biofuel Day in India in 2015.
  • The theme of World Biofuel Day 2022 is “Biofuels towards a Carbon Neutral World”

PM Modi Dedicated 2G Ethanol Plant in Panipat, Haryana 
On the occasion of World Biofuel Day 2022(10th August 2022), Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi, dedicated the 2nd generation (2G) Ethanol Plant in Panipat Refinery, Panipat, Haryana to the nation.

  • The 2G Ethanol Plant has been built by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) at an estimated cost of around Rs 900 crore.

Assam & Mizoram Signs Joint Statement on Resolving Border DisputeAssam,Mizoram govts sign joint statement on resolving border dispute

On 9th August 2022 the Governments of Assam and Mizoram signed a joint statement after a ministerial-level discussion held in Aizawl, Mizoram to resolve the boundary dispute between the two states.

  • Both sides have agreed to promote and maintain peace and also Deputy Commissioners of the bordering districts of both states shall meet at least once in two months.

Note – The next meeting between High-Level delegations of two states will take place at Guwahati, Assam in October 2022 where issues and claims will be deliberated in detail.
About the dispute:
i.The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam mainly comes from two colonial demarcations of Mizoram in 1875 by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BERF) while Assam is demarcated by the 1993 rules of demarcation.

  • Assam shares a 164.6 km long boundary with Mizoram and both sides have faced a number of conflicts in past years.

ii.In August 2020, the representatives of both states held talks in Aizawl, Mizoram and agreed to maintain peace and resolve the inter-state boundary dispute through dialogue.
ii.The delegates also discussed that the economic activities, including cultivation and farming, along the borders of the two states shall not be disturbed and will be allowed to continue regardless of the administrative control subject to Forest Regulations.
Note – In March 2022, Assam and Meghalaya governments had signed a historic agreement in New Delhi to resolve border disputes in 6 of the 12  areas of difference along its 884 km boundary.

  • According to the proposed recommendations for the 36.79 square km of land, Assam will keep 18.51 square km and give the remaining 18.28 square km to Meghalaya.

Tamil Nadu based NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL), a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Coal, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to develop 1,000 MW of solar power projects in Assam.

  • The agreement was signed  for setting up a joint venture company with equity participation of 51% by NLCIL and 49% by APDCL.

The MoU was signed by K. Mohan Reddy, Director (Planning and Projects), NLCIL, and R Kumar, Managing Director, APDCL in Dispur, Assam.

Highlights:
i.The establishment of this solar project will act as a stepping stone for NLCIL to achieve its ambitious plans of having capacity of around 17,171 MW, including 6,031 MW of renewable energy, by 2030.
ii.NLCIL operationalises mining along with a power generation capacity of 6,061 MW, including a renewable energy capacity of 1,421.06 MW with 1,370.06 MW of solar and 51 MW of wind-based power generation.
Note-
NLCIL is the first Central PSU to cross 1 GW capacity in solar power generation and is also a member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
