On June 25, 2020 Indian Weightlifting Federation(IWLF) Secretary Sahdev Yadav informed that 2 time Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, Weightlifter K. Sanjita Chanu will get the Arjuna award for 2018. This comes after the International Weightlifting Federation(IWF) cleared her doping charges.
Doping charges
- IWF has dropped the doping charges due to “non-conformities” in the handling of her sample.
- The doping charges were cleared on the basis of recommendation from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Key Info
The award is given to her as per the Delhi High Court order in 2018, where the selection committee was directed to consider her & keep the decision in a sealed cover until she was acquitted of the doping charges.
Background
i.Following her rejection for the 2017 Arjuna Awards, she filed a petition to the Delhi High Court challenging the decision to exclude her from the list of recommended candidates for the honour
ii.She was tested positive for a banned substance in May 2018.
Medals received by Sanjita Chanu: Won gold medals in the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games in the 48kg and 53kg categories respectively.
