The Railway Protection Force of Central Railway (CR), Pune division, Maharashtra launched a Robotic ‘Captain Arjun’ (Always be Responsible and Just Use to be Nice) to intensify the screening and surveillance of passengers. It was launched online by Arun Kumar, Director General (RPF), Railway Board in the presence of Sanjeev Mittal, General Manager, Central Railway, among others
- The BrainChild behind this innovation is Alok Bohra DIG/RPF, Central Railway.
How will it be useful?
Protect Anti-Social Activities: This robot was launched to screen passengers while they board trains and keep a watch on anti-social elements using Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. It is equipped with a motion sensor, one PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) camera and one Dome Camera. It also has an inbuilt siren, motion activated spotlight, with an in-built internal storage H-264 processor for recording in case there is a network failure.
Protection against COVID-19 Infection: It will also protect the passengers and the staff from possible infection as it does thermal screening and records the temperature in a digital display panel. If temperature is higher than reference range, it sounds an abnormal automatic alarm. It also has a sensor-based sanitizer and mask dispenser and can speak in local language.
Floor Sanitization: The robot has a floor sanitisation facility with good battery backup. It has rugged wheels which support all kinds of surfaces.

CR sets up Body Screening Facility ‘FebriEye’ in Mumbai’s CSMT, LTT Stations
In order to effectively scan passengers for symptoms of COVID-19, and to ensure contactless entry Central Railway has set up a body screening facility “FebriEye thermal cameras”, developed by Vehant Technologies have been set up at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- This is on the lines of effort towards passenger safety after automated ticket checking and managing access (ATMA) machine and Always be Responsible and robotic Captain Arjun.
- It is an AI-based thermal screening system that can record heat generated by the body of a person or an object to create a 2D image with different temperature levels. When passengers pass before the cameras, anyone with a temperature above the set range will be shown in a different colour pattern than the rest on the computer screen connected to the cameras.
