The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) annually celebrates the ASEAN Dengue Day on 15th June to create awareness on dengue prevention and control at the regional and National level.
The day allows the ASEAN Members to promote the dengue prevention and control measures, in coordination with the World Health Organisation(WHO).
The theme of the ASEAN Dengue Day is “ASEAN Unite Against Dengue Amidst the Pandemic”.
Background:
i.The 10th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting held in 2010 declared the 15th June of every year as the “ASEAN Dengue Day”.
ii.The first official ASEAN Dengue Day was observed on 15th June 2011.
World Dengue Day Campaign:
i.The world Dengue Day campaign is a global dengue awareness campaign, started by the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ISNTD) in 2018.
ii.The campaign calls the United Nations and the WHO to designate a World Dengue Day.
iii.To marks observance of ASEAN Dengue Day 2021 and in the motive to establish the World Dengue Day, the ISNTD and the Asia Dengue Voice & Action (ADVA) have jointly organised the ISNTD-ADVA World Dengue Day Forum – Cross-Sector Synergies, which was held online from 13th to 15th June 2021.
India’s National Dengue Day:
Annually India observes the National Dengue Day on 16th May with the recommendation of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Dengue and its global burden:
i.Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV), found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas.
ii.Dengue is transmitted by female mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti(primary vector) and Aedes albopictus(secondary dengue vector in Asia).
Vaccine:
The first dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia (CYD-TDV) developed by Sanofi Pasteur was licensed in December 2015 and has been approved by regulatory authorities in around 20 countries.
