On November 30, 2017, Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh released ‘Crime in India – 2016’ published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Highlights of ‘Crime in India – 2016’:
Number of Murder cases across India decreased by 5.2% from 2015-16. In 2015, 32127 cases were reported, which reduced to 30450 cases in 2016.
- Number of cases under Rioting decreased by 5% in 2015-16. In 2016, 61974 cases were reported as compared to 65255 cases in 2015.
- Number of Robbery cases decreased by 11.8% in 2015-16 while Dacoity cases decreased by 4.5% during the same period.
- Cases under ‘Crime Against Women’ in the year 2016 (338954) increased marginally compared to 2015 (329243).
- Total 4831515 cognizable crimes were reported in 2016, which marks an increase of 2.6 percent over the year 2015 (4710676 cases).
- 4831515 cognizable crimes included 2975711 crimes under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 1855804 crimes under Special and Local Laws (SLL).
- Uttar Pradesh accounted for 9.5% of total IPC crimes reported in India. Uttar Pradesh was followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9%), Maharashtra (8.8%) and Kerala (8.7).
- From perspective of cities, Delhi City accounted for 38.8% of total IPC crimes followed by Bengaluru (8.9%) and Mumbai (7.7%).
Data Included for the first time:
- Chapters on Violent Crimes, Crime Against Children, Crime Against Women, Juveniles in conflict with law, Economic Crimes, Crime Against Scheduled Casts (SC)/Scheduled Tribes (ST), Cyber Crimes, Disposal of Cases by Police and Court and Crime Against Senior Citizens have been included in the report for the first time.
- Statistics on the seizures of Arms, Ammunitions, Drugs and Currency by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) – Assam Rifles, CISF, BSF, CRPF, NIA and SSB – has also been provided.
- Data of cases registered and disposed by Railway Protection Force (RPF) under Railway Act 1989 and Railway Property (unlawful possession) Act 1966 have also been included.
