India Hosts BRICS Meeting of National Statistical Offices in Lucknow, UP
India hosted the Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries from August 3 to 4, 2026 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
- The two-day long meeting, held under the theme “Quality Statistics as a Driver of Change” .
Other Key Engagements:
14th Foundation Day BRICS CCI: The BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BRICS CCI) celebrated its 14th foundation day on July 24, 2026 in New Delhi, Delhi.
2nd Meeting of BRICS ACWG: India hosted the 2nd BRICS Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) Meeting as well as 2nd Meeting of the BRICS Expert Network on Asset Recovery from August 4 to 5, 2026 in Hyderabad, Telangana.
3rd BRICS Culture Working Group Meetings: Under India’s BRICS Presidency 2026, 3rd BRICS Culture Working Group (CWG) meetings is being held from August 5 to 6, 2026 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh(MP).
C-DAC and GSI Sign MoU to Advance Mineral Exploration and Disaster Management
In August 2026, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) signed an Umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi, Delhi to strengthen geoscience, mineral exploration and disaster management using Advanced Technologies.
Highlights of MoU:
Signatories: The MoU was signed by E. Magesh, Director General, C-DAC and Pradeep Singh, Additional Director General, GSI, in the presence of S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY.
Collaboration: The partnership will use C-DAC’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) and GSI’s geological expertise for AI-based geophysical data processing, 3D subsurface mapping, mineral targeting and domain-specific Large Language Model (LLM) development.
Disaster Management: The collaboration will support landslide monitoring using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), early warning systems and Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) studies.
Significance: The MoU will accelerate critical mineral and Rare Earth Elements (REE) exploration, strengthening India’s economic security and technological self-reliance.
About GSI: The GSI, under the Ministry of Mines, was established in 1851 with headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB), for geological surveys and mineral resource assessment.
IIT Hyderabad and Crimson Energy Launch India’s First Nuclear Training Programme ‘ANUGYAN’
In August 2026, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad), Telangana, in collaboration with Crimson Energy Experts India Private Limited (CEEPL), launched ‘ANUGYAN’ – Nuclear Technology Orientation Programme (NTOP), India’s first industry–academia programme in nuclear technology.
About ANUGYAN Nuclear Training Programme:
Objective: The three-month residential programme aims to bridge the talent gap by developing skilled nuclear professionals to support India’s goal of expanding its nuclear power capacity from around 8.8 GW (Giga Watt) to 100 GW by 2047.
Eligibility: The programme is open to engineering graduates, working professionals, Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) executives, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors, and industrial equipment manufacturers.
Curriculum: The programme covers key areas of nuclear engineering, including reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, radiation shielding, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), engineering design, nuclear safety, quality assurance, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) regulatory compliance, and simulator-based training.
Industry Integration: The programme combines academic learning with industry exposure, expert guidance from Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) institutions, and training aligned with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) regulations for future nuclear energy projects.
ICAR Develops India’s First T2T Genome of Pigeonpea Variety ‘Asha’
In August 2026, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) developed India’s first fully annotated Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) reference genome of the pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.) variety ‘Asha’, which was approved as the global reference genome to accelerate the development of climate-resilient, high-yielding, and nutritionally enriched pigeonpea varieties.
- The breakthrough supports the Government of India’s (GoI) Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses (2025–26 to 2030–31) to achieve a pulse production target of about 35 million tonnes(MT) by 2030–31.
About T2T Reference Genome of Pigeonpea:
Background: The achievement builds on the work of the ICAR–National Institute for Plant Biotechnology (ICAR-NIPB), which developed the world’s first draft genome of a pulse crop in 2011, followed by an improved version in 2017.
Genome: The reference genome comprises 752.65 million DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid ) base pairs assembled into 92 contigs, representing all 11 chromosomes, including 11 centromeres and 22 telomeres, ensuring chromosome-level completeness.
Annotation: Scientists identified 36,557 genes producing 48,008 messenger RNA (mRNA) sequences, with transcriptome mapping recording over 99.9% read alignment, confirming the genome’s high accuracy.
Repository: The genome assembly, designated NIPB_CcT2T_4, was deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database and released on 20 April 2026.
Jupiter Wagons and Lucchini RS Partners to Build Railwheel Manufacturing Platform in India
In August 2026, Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) partnered with Italy’s Lucchini RS Holding S.p.A. and SIMEST (Italian Society for Enterprises Abroad) S.p.A. to establish India’s first fully integrated private-sector railwheel manufacturing platform through Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Private Limited (JTRWF).
Highlights of the Partnership:
Investment: Lucchini RS (15%) and SIMEST (10%) will acquire a combined 25% stake in JTRWF worth EUR 28 million (Rs. 307 crore)
Platform: The partnership will establish a fully integrated railwheel platform covering raw material processing, forging, metallurgy, wheel manufacturing and final assembly, combining JTRWF’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar facility with the upcoming Odisha greenfield plant.
Technology: Lucchini RS will provide railwheel technology, engineering expertise and industrial support for technology transfer, product development and market expansion.
- The project is supported by the Government of Italy under the Sistema Italia framework, with SIMEST as investor and CDP providing financial and advisory support.

Niyo Forex and GlobalPay Secured Perpetual AD II Licence from RBI
In August 2026, Niyo Forex (operating via Kanji Forex Pvt Ltd) and GlobalPay (WSFx Global Pay Limited) secured perpetual and expanded perpetual Authorised Dealer Category II (AD II) licences respectively from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under the updated Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) 2026 regulations.
- These approvals allow both fintech firms to scale their cross-border payment operations, family remittances, and non-trade transactions
Key Details:
Significance of Licence: The regulatory approval enables the travel fintech company to continue and expand its foreign exchange operations, including trade and family maintenance remittances.
- Also, the new licence ensures long-term regulatory continuity for its forex business, allowing it to undertake an expanded set of permitted AD-II activities.
- Further, under the enhanced authorisation, Niyo Forex can expand its branch network without any requirement of additional approvals from RBI.
Other Fintech to Secured Licence: Apart from Niyo Forex, WSFx Global Pay (Global Pay), Bombay Stock Exchange Limited (BSE)-listed company, has also secured an expanded AD-II licence from the RBI under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA 2026), enabling it offer a wide range of foreign exchange and cross-border payment services.
- Eligible Transactions: The expanded licence enables the company to undertake non-trade current account transactions, except gifts and donations.
- Maximum Remittance Limit: The licence facilitates inward and outward trade remittances of maximum Rs 25 lakh.
- Appointment of Foreign Agencies: In addition, the company will be able to appoint forex correspondent agencies to expand the reach of regulated foreign exchange services.
- Target Audience: Through the licence, the company will cater to customers including individuals, students, travellers, exporters, importers, corporates and financial institutions through a wider range of RB-regulated forex and remittance services.

Air India and Azerbaijan Airlines Sign Codeshare Partnership
In August 2026, Air India and Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), part of AZCON Holding, entered into a codeshare partnership to enhance connectivity between India and Azerbaijan, while promoting business, tourism and cultural ties.
- The codeshare partnership was signed between Air India and AZAL, represented by Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Air India, and Jamil Manizade, CCO, Azerbaijan Airlines.

Codeshare services: Air India will place its ‘AI’ designator code on Azerbaijan Airlines’ daily flights between Delhi–Baku and Mumbai–Baku, enabling passengers to book travel through Air India.
Connectivity: The partnership allows seamless journeys through a single itinerary, including coordinated connections between Air India and Azerbaijan Airlines networks.

Prasanta Mahapatra Assumes Charge as SEBI Executive Director
In August 2026, Prasanta Mahapatra assumed charge as an Executive Director (ED) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He will oversee the Corporation Finance Investigation Department(CFID) and the Recovery and Refund Department(RRD).
About Prasanta Mahapatra:
Profile: He joined SEBI in April 1999 and brings over 27 years of experience in securities market regulation and supervision.
Career: During his tenure, he has worked across various departments, including the Market Regulation Department, Investigation Department, Enquiries and Adjudication Department, Market Intermediaries Regulation and Supervision Department, Corporation Finance Department, and Investment Management Department.
Key Roles: He served at SEBI’s Eastern Regional Office (ERO), Kolkata, West Bengal (WB) and was also a member of various domestic policy-making and advisory committees.
Previous Role: Before his elevation as ED, he served as Chief General Manager (CGM) in SEBI.

Taxonomy: The study established that the historically recognised ‘Hippocampus histrix’ actually comprises three distinct species, correcting decades of misidentification in museum collections and biodiversity databases.
Naming: The species was named after Amanda Vincent, an internationally renowned marine biologist, in recognition of her contributions to marine conservation and seahorse research.
Significance: The discovery represents the fifth recorded seahorse species from the Kerala coast and strengthens scientific knowledge of India’s marine biodiversity while supporting more accurate conservation planning.

Former Tripura and Bihar Governor and Padma Shri D. Y. Patil Passed Away
In August 2026, Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D. Y.) Patil, former Governor of Tripura and Bihar and a renowned educationist, passed away at the age of 90 in Kasba Bawda, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He was widely known as “Dada” and “Shikshanmaharshi” for his contributions to the field of education.
