MoCA Launches Next Phase of UDAN with MoUs with 22 States/UTs 
In September 2026, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) launched the next phase of the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) Scheme by signing 22 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with participating States and Union Territories (UTs) to strengthen regional air connectivity and aviation infrastructure across India.
Highlight of the Event:
Key People: The event was held at The Ashok, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi,Delhi and was inaugurated by Union Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Ministrty of of Civil Aviation(MoCA), in the presence of Union Minister of State (MoS) Murlidhar Mohol, MoCA; Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary, MoCA; and Vipin Kumar, Chairman of AAI.
22 MoUs:

• States Covered: Andhra Pradesh (AP), Bihar, Assam, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh(AR), Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu (TN), Uttar Pradesh (UP), Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand and West Bengal (WB).

Challenge Mode Portal: The MoCA also launched the Challenge Mode Portal for Aerodrome Development, enabling States and UTs to nominate airstrips and helipads for development or upgradation under the next phase of UDAN.
Route Bidding: MoCA released the Scheme Document for the next phase of UDAN Route Bidding. Airlines will be invited to bid for identified UDAN routes through a transparent and competitive process to improve connectivity, tourism, trade and employment.

President Amends Inter-State Council Order to Include Governors and Lt Governors in Meetings During President’s Rule
In September 2026, the President Droupadi Murmu amended the Inter-State Council Order, 1990 providing special conditions for the participation of the Governor/Lieutenant (Lt) Governor in the Inter-State Council Meetings, with the Inter-State Council (Amendment) Order, 2026, coming into force immediately upon its publication.
Order Key Highlights
Article Amendment: On September 9, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) notified the Inter-State Council (Amendment) Order, 2026.

• The amendment was made by the President under the powers conferred by Article 263 of the Constitution.

Governor Invitation: As per the notification, the Governor of a State shall be invited when a President’s proclamation under Article 356 is in force in that State.
Union Territory (UT) Provisions: In the case of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, New Delhi, Lt Governor shall be invited when a President’s order under Article 239AB is in force.

Overview of World Circular Economy Forum 2026 Held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) alongwith Bhupendrabhai Patel, Chief Minister (CM) of Gujarat, inaugurated the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2026 held from September 15 to September 18, 2026 at Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

• With this, India became the 1st South Asian country to host the WCEF, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, innovators and researchers from across the world to advance practical solutions for a circular economy.

About WCEF 2026:
Theme: The forum was held under the theme ‘Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity’.
Organised by: The forum was organised by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, Government of Finland; Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India (GoI); Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).
Key Release: The inaugural session witnessed the release of two publications: ‘Best Practices for Reuse of Treated Sewage’ and ‘Driving Sustainability – A Guide to India’s Circular Economy and EPR Initiatives’.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Lays Foundation Stone for ISRO’s Advanced Radar Facility 
In September 2026, Assam Chief Minister (CM) Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) Advanced Radar Research Facility (IARRF) at Chandrapur in Kamrup Metropolitan district, Assam.

• The foundation stone was laid on 21 September 2026 in the presence of ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan, and ISTRAC Director M.R. Raghavendra..

Key Highlights
Purpose: The facility is being established under the Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis (NETRA) programme to strengthen India’s Space Situational Awareness capabilities and safeguard space assets through advanced monitoring and tracking of satellites and other space objects.
First System: The first radar installed at the site will be a cloud-research radar, which is expected to become operational and be commissioned by February 2027.
Land Support: The Assam government has allocated around 200 bighas (approximately 70 acres) of land free of cost for establishing the facility.
About ISRO: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), established on August 15, 1969, by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai after superseding the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), is headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and is currently led by Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan.

IIT-BHU and University of Michigan Sign MoU for Electric Mobility Research Collaboration 
In September 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) (IIT-BHU), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, United States of America (USA), strengthening its international research collaboration in electric mobility with a focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable mobility innovation.

• The MoU was signed at the Electric Vehicle Centre (EVC), University of Michigan, by Prof. Amit Patra (Director, IIT-BHU) and Prof. Todd Allen (Associate Dean for Research, University of Michigan).

About IIT-BHU-University of Michigan MoU: 
Objective: The partnership aims to promote joint research, innovation, and academic exchange in electric vehicles, leveraging IIT (BHU)’s expertise in e-mobility and the University of Michigan’s advanced EV system capabilities.
Features: The collaboration includes joint research projects, faculty collaboration, student engagement programmes, and the development of a long-term white paper outlining future research directions in electric mobility.
Projects: Two ongoing sanctioned projects were presented with scope for expansion into new initiatives in electric mobility and sustainable transportation systems, along with the formation of a dedicated Materials Research Team to advance innovation in EV-related materials.

Government Dissolves Digital Communications Commission After 37 Years 
In September 2026, the Government of India (GoI) dissolved the Digital Communications Commission (DCC), the apex inter-departmental decision-making body under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications after nearly 37 years of functioning.

• The DoT issued the resolution on 19 September 2026, which took effect upon its publication in the Gazette of India on 21 September 2026.

Highlights of DCC Dissolution:
Background: Formed in April 1989 as Telecom Commission and renamed DCC in October 2018 under the National Digital Communications Policy, 2018.

• It handled major telecom policy, administrative and financial matters as an apex inter-departmental body.

Financial Powers: Projects up to Rs 100 crore were decided by the DoT Secretary, up to Rs 500 crore by the Telecom Minister, and Rs 500–1,000 crore to the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC).
Cabinet Approval: As per reports, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to wind up the DCC on 16 September 2026, followed by the DoT resolution dated 19 September 2026.
Last Meeting: At its 3 September 2026 meeting, the DCC finalised satellite communication spectrum decisions, including 5-year administrative assignment extendable by 2 years and 5% Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) on Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR).

PM Narendra Modi Unveils Logo for Birth Centenary Celebrations of Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji
In September 2026, the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi unveiled the logo for the birth centenary celebrations of Padma Vibhushan Yatikula Chakravarti Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji in Delhi, New Delhi.
About Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji:
Early Life: He was born as Venkataramana on April 27, 1931, at Ramakunja in Karnataka and entered the monastic order at a young age.
Pejavara Matha: He served as the head of Sri Pejavara Adhokshaja Matha, one of the Ashta Mathas of Udupi associated with the Dvaita philosophy of Sri Madhvacharya.

• He was noted for performing the Paryaya of the Udupi Sri Krishna Temple five times, a rare distinction among the Udupi seers.

Award: He was conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2020 in the field of Social work.
Passed Away: He passed away on December 29, 2019.

NIT Srinagar Becomes First NIT in India with Campus-Based Astronomical Observatory
In September 2026, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), became the first NIT in India to establish a dedicated campus-based astronomical observatory, equipped with a 14-inch Celestron C14 EdgeHD aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.

• The NIT Srinagar Observatory for Astronomy and Astrophysics (NSOAA) was inaugurated on 22 September 2026 to promote observational astronomy, astrophysics research, student training and public outreach.

About NIT Srinagar Astronomy Observatory
Inauguration: NSOAA was inaugurated by Prof. Anurag Misra, Director of NIT Srinagar, and Prof. Nasir Iqbal, Registrar of the University of Kashmir.
Collaboration: The facility has been developed with scientific guidance and collaboration from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru(Karnataka), with Dr. Niruj Mohan Ramanujam associated as an advisor and collaborator.
Telescope System: The observatory features a 14-inch Celestron C14 EdgeHD Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a computerised equatorial mount and advanced imaging equipment, including planetary and cooled deep-sky cameras, LRGB (Luminance, Red, Green, Blue) filters, a 2.5x Barlow lens, and high-speed imaging capabilities.

Premier Energies Commissions India’s Largest Solar Cell Facility, Total Capacity Reaches 10.6 GW 
In September 2026, Premier Energies commissioned a 7 Gigawatt (GW) N-type TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) G12R solar cell manufacturing facility at Naidupeta, Andhra Pradesh (AP), increasing its total solar cell manufacturing capacity from 3.6 GW to 10.6 GW and making it the largest solar cell manufacturing capacity in India.
Premier Energies Solar Cell Facility
Facility Details: The 101-acre facility, developed with a capital expenditure of Rs 3,293 crore, has begun trial runs ahead of commercial production, with a capacity to produce around 88,000 solar cells per hour and achieve an average efficiency of about 25.8% after stabilisation.
Technology: The plant uses N-type TOPCon technology with digital manufacturing systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system for water recycling and reuse.
Capacity Expansion: Premier Energies plans to invest Rs. 12,500 crore over three years for expansion, including backward integration into ingot and wafer production and diversification into inverters, transformers, and battery energy storage systems.

• As of June 2026, the company had an order book worth Rs. 150 billion, with solar cells contributing 58% and modules contributing 40% of the total order value.

MDL Signs MoU with NSHIP-AP to Develop Greenfield Shipyard at Dugarajapatnam, AP
In September 2026, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park–Andhra Pradesh (NSHIP-AP) to develop Rs.15,000 crore Greenfield Shipyard at Dugarajapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP).

• The MoU was signed by Captain Jagmohan (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), MDL and Praveen Adhithya C.V., Managing Director (MD), NSHIP-AP, in the presence of N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister (CM), AP.

About Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster:
Project : The Dugarajapatnam Shipbuilding-cum-Port Cluster is being developed under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS) with an initial shipyard capacity of 1.2 million Gross Tonnes (GT) per annum, along with scope for future expansion.
Focus: The proposed shipyard will construct tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and other specialised large vessels.
Project Infrastructure: The estimated cost of the shipbuilding and ship repair yard is Rs 29,254 crore, while the proposed port, to be developed by the Government of India (GoI), is estimated at Rs 9,513 crore.
About NSHIP-AP: National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park-AP (NSHIP-AP) is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) jointly formed by the AP Maritime Board (APMB) and Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) to develop the shipbuilding cluster.

WMO’s State of Global Water Resources 2025 Report: Global Glacier Mass Loss Continues for Fourth Consecutive Year 
In September 2026, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released the State of Global Water Resources 2025 report, noting that 2025 marked the fourth consecutive year in which every major glaciated region recorded a net loss in ice mass, with global glacier loss estimated at 408 ± 132 gigatonnes, highlighting declining freshwater reserves and an increasingly erratic global water cycle. .

• Global glacier mass loss in 2025 was equivalent to a sea-level rise of 1.1 ± 0.4 millimetres (mm), with six of the seven largest annual losses recorded in the last seven years, and cumulative losses of 1,400 gigatonnes between 2023 and 2025.

Glaciers: Mountain glaciers have lost about 6.2% of their total ice mass between 2000 and 2025, with some regions witnessing declines of up to 40% over past decades.
Trend: The report confirms the fourth consecutive year of universal glacier mass loss, with six of the seven largest annual losses occurring in the last seven years, indicating accelerating climate change impacts.
Cumulative: Between 2023 and 2025, glaciers lost a cumulative 1,400 gigatonnes of water, equivalent to filling around 560 million Olympic-sized swimming pools or nearly one-third of annual global freshwater withdrawals.

India Tops Global Business Climate Survey 2026 Among 41 Markets: Swedish Chamber survey
In September 2026, India was ranked first in business climate among 41 global markets in the Global Business Climate Survey 2026, reflecting strong confidence among Swedish companies operating in India.

• Ireland and Vietnam ranked second and third, respectively.

S&P Global Ratings Raises India’s FY27 GDP Growth Forecast to 7.0% in Asia-Pacific Q4 2026 Outlook
In September 2026, the NewYork based S&P Global Ratings released its report titled- ‘Economic Outlook Asia-Pacific Q4 2026: Exports, Domestic Demand Will Shore Up Growth’, raising India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27) to 7.0% from 6.6% earlier.
Economic Outlook Key highlights
Forecast Upgraded: S&P Global Ratings raised India’s FY27 GDP growth forecast by 40 basis points (bps) to 7.0% from 6.6%, supported by robust industrial activity, healthy consumption, strong goods exports and accelerating government investment.
Growth Moderation: India’s economic growth is expected to moderate during the second half of FY27 as the boost from Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalisation and income-tax cuts gradually fades.
Future GDP Forecast: S&P Global Ratings projected India’s GDP growth at 7.2% in FY28, followed by 7.0% in FY29 and 6.8% in FY30.

Mastercard Exits Pine Labs, Sells 4.31% Stake Worth Rs 933 Crore via Block Deals 
In September 2026, Mastercard Incorporated (United States of America, USA-based payments company) exited Pine Labs Limited, Indian fintech powerhouse, by selling its entire 4.31% stake through block deals on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), amounting to Rs 933 crore involving institutional investors.
About Mastercard Exit from Pine Labs:  
Transaction: Mastercard Asia/Pacific Pvt Ltd sold 4.97 crore shares in 13 tranches at an average price of Rs 187.75 per share, resulting in a total deal value of approximately Rs 933.57 crore.
Buyers: The shares were acquired by domestic and global institutional investors, including ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company, Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund, Edelweiss Mutual Fund, Franklin Templeton, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and others.
Nature: The deal was a secondary share sale, meaning ownership transferred between investors without issuance of new shares by Pine Labs, reflecting investor exit rather than capital raising.

J&K Bank Signs Escrow Agreement to Sell 0.5% stake in PNB MetLife for Rs 120 Crores
In September 2026, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Bank signed an escrow agreement with MetLife International Holdings and Barclays group companies to sell PNB MetLife India Insurance shares amounting to nearly Rs 120.10 crore (Cr).
Key Details:
Stakes sold: The bank is selling its 0.5% stake in PNB MetLife India Insurance to MetLife International Holdings, reducing its overall stake from 3.03% to about 2.53%.
Agreement: As per the terms of the escrow agreement, for the deposit and transfer of the equity shares and purchase consideration.:

• Share escrow agent: Barclays Wealth Trustees (India) will act as the share escrow agent which covers the transfer of equity shares , and
• Cash escrow agent: Barclays Bank PLC which acts as the cash escrow agent, covers the purchase consideration.

About J&K Bank: It was established in 1938 and headquartered in Srinagar,(J&K). Its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is Amitava Chatterjee.

In September 2026, England fast bowler Mark Wood announced his retirement from International cricket at the age of 36, ending an 11-year international career. He was born on 11 January 1990 in Ashington, Northumberland, England.

• He finished his career as England’s sixth-highest wicket-taker in men’s T20I history with 54 wickets in 38 matches, alongside overall career figures of 119 Test wickets in 38 matches and 80 ODI wickets in 70 matches.

Vir Chakra Awardee Flight Lieutenant Alfred Tyrone Cooke Passed Away
In September 2026, Flight Lieutenant Alfred Tyrone Cooke (Retd.), a decorated fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Vir Chakra (VrC) awardee, passed away at the age of 87 in New Delhi, Delhi. He was born in 1939.
About Flight Lieutenant Alfred Tyrone Cooke:
Commission: He was commissioned into the IAF on December 19, 1961, through the 80th Pilots Course.
Military Career: He served as a fighter pilot with No. 14 Squadron (The Fighting Bulls), completed around seven years of service, and left the IAF in 1968.
Valor: During the 1965 India–Pakistan War, he shot down a Pakistani F-86 Sabre while flying a Hawker Hunter from Kalaikunda Air Force Station, West Bengal (WB).
Vir Chakra: He was awarded the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award, for displaying exceptional courage, leadership and devotion to duty during the Battle of Kalaikunda.

Starbucks to Set Up First India GCC in Chennai, Create 800 Jobs 
In September 2026, Starbucks Coffee Company, a United State of America(USA) based global coffeehouse chain, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu(TN) to establish its India’s first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai(TN). The centre is expected to create around 800 high-value technology jobs in its first phase.

• The MoU was exchanged between Starbucks and Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state’s investment promotion agency, in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister(CM) C. Joseph Vijay.

Key Highlights:
Global Operations: The Chennai hub will support Starbucks’ global business and technology operations and work with its teams in the US and other markets.
In-House Capabilities: Starbucks plans to bring some technology work currently handled by third-party service providers in-house.
Independent Operations: The GCC will operate independently of Starbucks’ Indian retail joint venture with Tata Consumer Products Limited (TCPL).
Global Capability Centre (GCC): A GCC is a specialised unit established by a multinational company to support its global operations. GCCs typically undertake functions such as Information Technology (IT), software development, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, finance, engineering and Research & Development (R&D).
