NATIONAL AFFAIRS

DPIIT releases new series of WPI and PPI with base year 2022-23: MoC&I
In June 2026, the office of Economic Adviser under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I) released the revised series of  “Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI)” with base year 2022-23.
Transition to PPI
Index Revision: The new WPI series will replace the existing 2011-12 base year series.

  • It also released a new series of Output Producer Price Index (OPPI), Trial Input Producer Price Index (IPPI) and Service PPI of seven services: Banking, Securities Transaction, Insurance, Management of Pension Funds, Railways, Air (Passenger), and Telecom.

Index Transition: The revised WPI (base year 2022–23) will continue to be published alongside PPI for five years.

  • After this transition period, WPI will be discontinued, and PPI will become the primary producer-price measure.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi Launches WT-MARUT Portal; Targets 100 GW Wind Capacity by 2030 
On 15 June 2026, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched WT-MARUT (Wind Turbine Materials and Resources Utility Tracker), India’s first Wind Turbine Supply Chain Management Portal, at the Global Wind Day Conference 2026 held in Goa.

  • The platform is designed to strengthen domestic wind manufacturing, improve supply-chain transparency, and support India’s goal of reaching 100 Gigawatt (GW) of wind energy capacity by 2030.

About WT-MARUT Portal: 
Features: It provides component sourcing visibility, supplier qualification mechanisms, collaboration tools, export readiness support and secure hosting of industry data within India.
Implementation: The platform was developed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) with support from the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA).
Other Releases: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, MNRE, also released the Wind Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) Portal, a Coffee Table Book of Pawan Urja (wind energy), and a series of Knowledge Reports and State-wise Policy Reports prepared by leading industry and knowledge partners.

IIT Hyderabad to Set up ‘CODENE’,  India’s first Nuclear Engineering Design Centre 
In June 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H),Telangana, will establishCODENE (Centre for Design and Engineering in Nuclear Energy)’, India’s 1st Centre of Design Excellence in Nuclear Engineering at its campus in Hyderabad, Telangana.
About CODENE:
Background: The initiative is part of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between IIT-H, Coastal Engineering and Equipments (India) Pvt. Limited (CEEPL India), and France’s Dassault Systemes SE,  during Bharat Innovates 2026 held in Nice, France.
Focus Areas:  The centre will focus on next-generation reactor technologies, nuclear safety systems, computational modelling, and advanced materials, while also strengthening capacity building through training in nuclear science and engineering.
Technology: The proposed facility will use advanced 3D modeling and digital twin technologies of Dassault Systemes.
Significance: The new centre is expected to bolster India’s capabilities in nuclear engineering design and generate skilled workforce for the country’s expanding nuclear energy programme.

DIBD Partners with GEM to Enable Multilingual Access to Public Procurement
In June 2026, Digital India BHASHINI(BHASha INterface for India) Division (DIBD), under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and Government e Marketplace (GeM), National Public Procurement Portal under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under ‘BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan – A BHASHINI Sahayogi Program’

  • The initiative aims to strengthen multilingual digital capabilities across India’s public procurement ecosystem through the BHASHINI Platform.

Key Details of MoU:
Aim: The initiative aims to enable multilingual access, governance, and service delivery on GeM platforms using voice-first technology and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), supporting communication across 22 official Indian languages and other regional languages.
Collaboration: GeM and BHASHINI will jointly develop and deploy multilingual digital public resources through initiatives such as BHASHINI Udyat, Mitra, Appmitra, Sahyogi, and Pravakta.

  • The collaboration will enable translation Application Programming Interface(APIs), domain-specific language models, multilingual glossaries, voice-enabled tools, voice bots, and linguistic datasets to strengthen multilingual capabilities across the GeM ecosystem.

Features: Encourages data contributions through Bhashadaan, awareness campaigns, capacity-building initiatives, supports development and sharing of language resources for multilingual procurement across the GeM ecosystem.

ASI and Denmark Sign MoU for Underwater Survey of Oresund Shipwreck near Karaikal 
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)’s Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW) and the National Museum of Denmark: Njord – Center for Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage, Copenhagen, Denmark, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct a non-invasive underwater survey near Karaikal, Puducherry, to locate and document the wreck of the Danish ship Oresund in 1619 CE.

  • The initiative aims to strengthen Indo–Danish cooperation in underwater heritage research and study early 17th-century maritime links through the first Danish ship known to have reached India.

About Indo–Danish Underwater Archaeology Collaboration:
Significance: The Oresund is the first Danish vessel to reach India and, after wrecking near Karaikal, provides key evidence of early European maritime presence, Danish East India Company-era activity, and Indo–Danish cultural interactions.
Project Scope: The collaboration enables the application of advanced non-invasive scientific and technological methods to locate and identify potential shipwreck remains, while supporting the documentation, protection, and scientific study of underwater cultural heritage.

NBA Reconstitutes Agrobiodiversity Expert Committee; with Padma Shri Dr P L Gautam as its Chair 
In June 2026, the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), reconstituted the Expert Committee on Agrobiodiversity with Padma Shri awardee Dr. P. L. Gautam, a renowned agricultural scientist and  former Chairperson of the NBA and the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA), as its Chair.
About Expert Committee on Agrobiodiversity:
Legal Status: The expert committee was reconstituted under Section 13(1) of the Biological Diversity (BD Act, 2002), for a period of one year.
Co-Chair: The NBA has also appointed Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson of Protection of PPVFRA as the Co-Chair of the Committee.
Key Responsibilities: NBA has outlined the responsibilities of the committee like: advising the authority  on integrating biodiversity considerations into the agriculture sector and promoting sustainable agricultural practices; examining  issues relating to the seed sector under the BD Act, 2002;  reviewing  guidelines for international collaborative research involving biological resources and others.

Indian Army Receives 106 Peacekeeper (Agniveg) Jet-Powered Kamikaze Drones from SMPP
In June 2026, the Indian Army (IA) has received 106 jet-powered Peacekeeper (Agniveg) drones, including 100 operational drones and 6 training drones, from defence manufacturer SMPP Limited.

  • Kamikaze drones, or loitering munitions, are unmanned systems that destroy targets by striking them directly.

About Peacekeeper (Agniveg) Jet-Powered Kamikaze Drones:
Partnership:  The Peacekeeper drone, developed with KB Indela, Belarus, has been partially localized in India, and an upgraded 750 kilometer per hour(kmph) variant has been proposed.
Agniveg:  It is a turbojet-powered kamikaze drone designed for long-range precision strikes against high-value enemy targets.
Features: The drone has an operational range of 180 kilometer(km), a maximum speed of 450 km per hour(kmph), and1 a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of less than 5 metres(m). It can operate effectively in jammed, spoofed, and  Global Positioning System(GPS)-denied environments.
Role: The drone can strike strategic enemy targets, bridging the gap between artillery and long-range missile systems.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

Jio Platforms Enters WIPO Global Top 20 Patent Rankings, Becomes Only Indian Company on List
In June 2026, Jio Platforms(JPL) , the technology arm of Reliance Industries Limited(RIL), entered into the global top 20 in the latest Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT) rankings for 2025 released by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

  • It is the only Indian technology innovator to break into the Global Top-20 coveted list.
  • China topped the world in 2025 PCT filings with 73,718 applications, while India ranked 12th globally with 3,070 PCT applications.

Key Findings:
Top Countries: The top five origins accounted for over 78.2% of all PCT applications filed in 2025.

  • China topped the global rankings in 2025 PCT applications, followed by the USA (52,617) and Japan (47,922).

Top PCT Patent Applicants: For the ninth consecutive year, Huawei Technologies (China) remained the world’s top Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applicant, filing 7,523 applications in 2025.

  • It was followed by Samsung Electronics (Republic of Korea) with 4,698 applications and Qualcomm (USA) with 3,227.

Top Research Applicant: With 342 published applications, China’s Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology remained the leading applicant among government and public research organizations (PROs) in 2025.

BANKING & FINANCE

SEBI Introduced Revised Framework for ETFs Effective from September 01, 2026
In June 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) revised the trading framework for Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), introducing dynamic price bands to determine their base price.

  • As per SEBI’s circular, the new trading rules for ETFs will come into effect from September 1, 2026.

Key Changes:
Equity and Debt ETFs: Replacing the existing fixed 20% price band based on the Net Asset Value (NAV) for equity ETFs and debt ETFs, the revised framework introduced  dynamic price band (excluding overnight and liquid ETFs) with initial limit of 10%, which can later be expanded  up to 20% after a cooling-off period.

  • The price band will further be expanded by 5% increments if prices hit the upper threshold during the trading session.

ETF for Commodity: For commodity ETFs tracking gold and silver, the updated framework prescribed dynamic price bands with an initial limit of ±6%, which can be expanded in stages of 3% following a cooling-off period based on market movements.
Pre-Open Call  Auction: The revised norms introduced a pre-open call auction mechanism specifically for commodity ETFs to enhance better price discovery, while domestic ETFs trade only during Indian market hours.

Lt Vishal Kumar Awarded Sword of Honour and President’s Gold Medal at IMA Passing Out Parade 2026 
In June 2026, President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the Sword of Honour and President’s Gold Medal to Lieutenant (Lt) Vishal Kumar, at the Passing Out Parade of the 158th Regular Course of the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, Uttarakhand, for securing first place in the overall Order of Merit and emerging as the best all-round officer cadet.

  • Academy Under Officer Prince Raj secured the Silver Medal for second position, while Senior Under Officer Tejas Bhatt won the Bronze Medal for third position in the overall Order of Merit.

About Lt Vishal Kumar:
Background: Lt Vishal Kumar, hailing from Patna, Bihar, who cleared the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination on his first attempt, completed three years of training at NDA, and subsequently joined IMA, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Achievement: As Academy Cadet Adjutant (ACA), one of the highest cadet appointments at IMA, he excelled in academics, military training, physical fitness, leadership, and extracurricular activities, emerging as the top cadet of the 158th Regular Course.
Sword of Honour: The award is presented to the best all-round gentleman cadet of the IMA, while the President’s Gold Medal is awarded to the cadet securing first position in the overall Order of Merit.

Sarvam AI Becomes India’s 130th Unicorn After Raising USD 234 Million
In June 2026, Sarvam AI, India’s full-stack sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup, became India’s 130th unicorn after raising  USD 234 million (i.e. nearly 2,210 crore) as part of its USD 300 million Series B funding round.

  • Following this, the company’s  valuation reaches USD 1.5 billion, making it India’s only AI startup to achieve this feat.

Key Details:
Milestone: With the latest funding round, SarvamAI became the fifth startup to join India’s unicorn club in 2026, following KreditBee, Neysa, Juspay, and Aerospace.
Investors: HCL Tech and Bessemer Venture Partners led the funding round, with participation from existing investors Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners.
Acquisition: As part of the deal, HCL Technologies Limited (HCLTech) will acquire a minority stake (10.46%) in SarvamAI worth Rs 1,427.25 crore (approximately USD 150 million).

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

DRDO successfully conducts flight-test of indigenously developed Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile 
In June 2026, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight-test of the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) with an expected range of up to 1,500 km from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.

  • The missile successfully met all mission objectives, validating key technologies in propulsion, guidance, navigation and control, and warhead delivery, during trials conducted by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur using a mobile articulated launcher.

Key Details of Trial:
Validation: The missile’s performance was monitored through radar, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations deployed along the flight path.
Development: LRLACM is an indigenously developed missile with all sub-systems developed by various DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry partners.

  • Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bengaluru, Karnataka is the Nodal Laboratory.

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan Released Book ‘Agatthiyar- The Unifier’
In June 2026, Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan released the book ‘Agatthiyar – The Unifier’, authored by O. Shama Bhat and Dr. M. N. Sudha and translated into Tamil by Professor Kalyani, at a function held at in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The book was published by Kalaimagal magazine.

Key Details of Book:
Key Focus: The book highlights the life, teachings, and philosophical contributions of the revered sage Agatthiyar.
Themes: It focuses on Agatthiyar as a unifying figure in ancient Indian knowledge traditions, emphasizing his contributions to language, medicine, spirituality, and cultural integration, while also highlighting his role in promoting harmony among diverse schools of thought in Indian civilisation.
Legacy: Agathiyar is credited with foundational contributions to Tamil grammar and Sangam literature, with his legacy associated with the Pothigai Hills, Tamil Nadu (TN), and the River Kaveri.

Global Wind Day 2026 – June 15
Global Wind Day, also known as World Wind Day, is observed annually on 15 June to raise awareness about the importance of wind energy and its potential as a clean, renewable, and sustainable source of power.

  • 2026 Theme: “Our Wind, Our Community.” 

Background:
First Observance: World Wind Day was first observed in 2007 by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) to promote awareness about the benefits and potential of wind energy across Europe.
Global Expansion: In 2009, World Wind Day evolved into a global observance through a partnership between the EWEA and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), extending its reach.
Organisers: This annual event is coordinated by WindEurope (formerly the European Wind Energy Association,EWEA) in partnership with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), along with various national Renewable Energy (RE) associations.
2026 Events: The Government of India(GoI) hosted the Global Wind Day 2026 Conference on 15 June 2026 in Goa.

Asean dengue day 2026 – June 15
ASEAN Dengue Day (ADD) is observed annually across the globe on June 15 to raise awareness and strengthen regional efforts against dengue through preventive measures, scientific advancements, and community participation.

  • Theme: “ASEAN United: Zero Dengue Deaths – A Future We Build Together by 2030”

Background: 
Adoption: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) endorsed the observance of ADD during the 10th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting in 2010.
Inauguration: The first official ADD was observed on June 15, 2011, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Partnership: Since 2012, the WHO has partnered with ASEAN to mark the day.
Observance in India: National Dengue Day is observed annually on May 16 in India.
2026 Event:The 9th Asia Dengue Summit (ADS) 2026 was held in Singapore from 15–17 June 2026.

STATE NEWS

Indian Army Signs MoU with Bharti Airtel to Expand Mobile Connectivity in AR
In June 2026, Indian Army (IA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharti Airtel Limited to expand mobile communication infrastructure in Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh (AR).

  • The initiative will improve access to government services, education, healthcare, and financial inclusion while enhancing operational communication for troops deployed in forward areas.

About IA–Bharti Airtel MoU:
Development: Improved connectivity will support education, healthcare, financial inclusion, Electronic (e)-governance, better communication, and boost tourism, local business, and entrepreneurship.
Security: Upgraded infrastructure will enhance military communication, situational awareness, and logistics support in forward areas.
Significance: The initiative promotes military–civil integration for development in border regions and aligns with Viksit Bharat @2047.
Uniform Reforms: The IA released the ‘Army Uniforms–2026 Pamphlet’, introducing the Bandi Jacket for formal wear and a Battle Jacket to replace the winter uniform by June 2029.

  • They also include changes in ceremonial sword usage and the removal of the term ‘Royal’, reinforcing India’s indigenous military identity.

Kerala CM V D Satheesan Inaugurated Free Bus Travel Scheme ‘Priyadarshini’ for Women & Transgenders 
In June 2026, the Chief Minister (CM) of Kerala V D Satheesan, inaugurated the ‘Priyadarshini’ free bus travel scheme across Kerala, enabling women and transgender persons to travel free of cost on 3,125 ordinary Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses across the state.

  • The scheme aims to enhance mobility, reduce transportation costs, and promote the socio-economic empowerment and social inclusion of women and transgender persons.

About the Launch of Priyadarshini Scheme: 
Eligibility: All women and transgender persons are eligible for the scheme irrespective of income, caste, social status, or age.
Implementation: Beneficiaries receive zero-value tickets through an Electronic Ticket Machine (ETM) while travelling on designated KSRTC buses.
Significance: The scheme is the first major welfare promise implemented under the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government’s Indira Guarantees programme, with the Kerala Government reimbursing KSRTC for revenue losses at an estimated cost of over Rs.60 crore per month and Rs.800 crore annually, while placing Kerala alongside Tamil Nadu (TN), Andhra Pradesh (AP), Karnataka, and Telangana in providing free bus travel for women and transgender persons.
