Overview of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to Karnataka and Telangana on 10 May 2026
On 10 May 2026, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Karnataka and Telangana  to participate in the Art of Living’s 45th anniversary in Bengaluru (Karnataka) and inaugurate/dedicate projects worth around Rs 9,400 crore in Hyderabad (Telangana), including infrastructure, rail, and healthcare initiatives.

  • The visit included the inauguration of India’s first functional  Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park in Warangal, Telangana.

Highlights of the Visits:
Visit to Karnataka:  PM Narendra Modi participated in the 45th anniversary celebrations of The Art of Living and attended the 70th birthday celebrations of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Bengaluru.

  • He inaugurated the newly constructed Dhyan Mandir at the Art of Living International Centre (Bengaluru).

Visit to Telangana: PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for four-laning of National Highway-167 (NH-167) from Gudebellur to Mahabubnagar under the Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor at a cost exceeding Rs 3,175 crore.

  • He also laid the foundation stone for the Zaheerabad Industrial Area in Sangareddy district.
  • He dedicated Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)’s Malkapur Terminal Project in Hyderabad and  Sindhu Hospital in Hyderabad.

AIFF & Odisha Government Renew 5-Year MoU to Strengthen Youth Football Development
In May 2026, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Department of Sports and Youth Services (DSYS), Government of Odisha signed a renewed five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to continue and expand their elite youth football development partnership.

  • The MoU was signed by Vijay Yeddula, Director of Sports, DSYS and M. Satyanarayan, Deputy Secretary General of AIFF in the presence of AIFF Technical Director Syed Sabir Pasha.

DSYS–AIFF Partnership
Background: The collaboration began with an MoU signed in November 2023 under the AlFF-Fédération Internationale de Football Association (AIFF-FIFA) Talent Academy initiative, supported by FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme.
New Framework: The renewed agreement introduces a structured framework with defined roles, governance mechanisms, performance benchmarks, and financial commitments.
Focus: The academy will continue adopting international development standards, sports science, and professional football pathways to strengthen youth football development in India.
Roles & Support: AIFF will oversee technical and operational player development, while the DSYS will provide institutional, financial, and infrastructure support.

India Hands Over IUCAA Banner to SAAO to Strengthen Scientific Cooperation
In May 2026, India’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Prabhat Kumar, formally handed over the banner of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) to the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) during a ceremony held at the Royal Observatory in Cape Town, South Africa.
IUCAA–SALT Collaboration
Handover: The banner of IUCAA will be displayed at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), one of the largest optical telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere, symbolising the strengthening scientific and astronomical partnership between India and South Africa.
Collaboration Areas: The initiative promotes joint research, academic exchanges, and collaborative projects in astronomy and space sciences between India and South Africa.
Cooperation: SALT highlighted its collaboration with Indian researchers on a new camera detector and controller system, while South African scientists are also set to participate in astronomy meetings hosted by India during its 2026 BRICS chairship.
About IUCAA: The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), located in Pune, Maharashtra, focuses on research and education in astronomy and astrophysics.

RBI & ECB Signed MoU to Boost Central Banking Cooperation
In May 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Central Bank (ECB), to enhance cooperation in the field of central banking.
Key Details:
Signatories: The MoU was signed by Dr. Sanjay Malhotra, Governor of RBI and Christine Lagarde, President of ECB on the sidelines of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) meetings held in Basel, Switzerland.
Key Focus Area: The newly signed MoU, which updates the previous agreement signed in 2015, establishes a framework for a regular exchange of information, policy dialogue, and technical cooperation between the two institutions in areas of mutual interest in the field of central banking.
Significance: The renewed agreement is expected to bolster institutional engagement and collaboration on central banking practices and financial sector developments.

Delhi Metro Partners with Airtel Payments Bank to Launch RuPay ‘On-The-Go’ cards 
In May 2026, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has partnered with Airtel Payments Bank to launch co-branded RuPay ‘On-The-Go’ National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) for seamless digital payments and metro travel across India.

  • The announcement was made in the presence of Vikas Kumar, Managing Director(MD), DMRC and Anubrata Biswas, MD, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Airtel Payments Bank in New Delhi, Delhi.

About RuPay ‘On-The-Go’ Cards
Objective: The initiative aims to promote the Government of India (GoI)’s vision of ‘One Nation, One Card’ by enhancing interoperability, convenience, and cashless mobility solutions for commuters.
Key Feature: The card enables commuters to use a single open-loop card across metro systems, buses, and other transit networks nationwide.
Card Variants: The co-branded cards are available as Debit Cards and Prepaid Payment Instrument for Mass Transit Systems (PPI-MTS) cards, featuring EMV chip protection for secure online and offline transactions.
Sustainability & Digital Access: The cards are made using 99% recycled plastic to reduce carbon footprint, while users can digitally recharge them through the DMRC or Airtel mobile applications(apps).

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

SBI Research Projects India’s Q4FY26 Growth at 7.2%
In May 2026, State Bank of India (SBI) released its latest Ecowrap Research report. As per the report, India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is projected to reach nearly 7.2% in 4th Quarter (Q4: January-March) of Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), lower than the advanced estimates of 7.3% (projected in February 2026).

  • The report noted that despite global headwinds, the Indian economy has maintained robust growth momentum, supported by rural demand, fiscal stimulus, and urban consumption.

Key Projections:

FY26 & FY27: The report has further projected India’s GDP growth rate at 7.5% for the full FY26.

  • For FY27, India’s real GDP growth is estimated at 6.6%, mainly due to the ongoing economic implications of global geopolitical disturbances.

Nominal GDP: As per the report, India’s nominal GDP is estimated at around 12.2%, while for FY27, the nominal GDP is projected at nearly 11%, factoring in a deflator of approximately 4.5%.

Bank Credit: The report also highlighted that bank credit growth by Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) increased to 16.1%, compared to previous year’s growth rate of 11.0%.

  • In addition, total incremental credit growth stood at Rs 29.5 trillion.

National Panchayat Awards 2025: 42 Panchayats Recognised; Karnataka Tops with 6 Awards
In May 2026, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) announced the winners of the National Panchayat Awards 2025 (NPA-2025), recognising 42 Panchayats from across the country for their excellence in rural governance, sustainable development, sanitation, infrastructure, and grassroot level leadership.

  • Karnataka topped the NPA 2025 with 6 awards, followed by Odisha and Andhra Pradesh(AP) with 5 awards each.

About NPA 2025:
DDUPSVP: 34 Gram Panchayats (GP) span across 17 States and Union Territories (UTs) have been selected under Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) that also includes joint winners.

  • These awards have been linked to the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) 2.0 scores.

NDSPSVP: This year, 8 Panchayats have been selected as winners under Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (NDSPSVP-2025), comprising 3 under the Best District Panchayat category, 2 under Best Block Panchayat and 3 under Best Gram Panchayat (GP) category.
Prominent Winners: New Napam Gaon Panchayat (Assam) bagged India’s Best GP award under NDSPSVP 2025, earning a monetary prize of Rs 1.5 crore.

  • It is followed by Telcup (Bihar), Biraharu (Uttar Pradesh, UP)  ranked at 2nd and 3rd positions, with monetary prize of Rs 1.25 crore and Rs 1 crore, respectively.

Suvendu Adhikari Sworn-in as 9th CM of WB, 1st BJP CM in State
In May 2026, Suvendu Adhikari,  leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), officially sworn-in as the 9th Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal (WB), becoming the first leader from the BJP to hold the post in the state.

  • He succeeded Mamata Banerjee, who served as WB’s CM since 2011.

Key Highlights:
Administered by: Ravindra Narayana Ravi, Governor of West Bengal, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Suvendu Adhikari and five ministers at a ceremony held at Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Election Result: In the 2026 WB Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP won 207 of 294 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), which secured 80 seats.
Cabinet Induction: Along with CM Suvendu Adhikari, senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania, and Kshudiram Tudu were inducted into the initial council of ministers.

TVK founder C. Joseph Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister 
In May 2026, C. Joseph Vijay (Perambur constituency), the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister (CM) of Tamil Nadu and officially succeeded Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin.

  • The ceremony took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN), where Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath.
  • Udhayanidhi Stalin of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) represents the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency officially took office as the 19th Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Announcements: Immediately after assuming office at Fort St. George, Chennai. CM Vijay signed three major files:

  • 200 Units Free Electricity: For all domestic consumers using up to 500 units.
  • Singappen Special Task Force for women’s safety and
  • Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) to curb drug trafficking across Tamil Nadu.

SAIL Appoints Ashok Kumar Panda as New Chairman and MD 
In May 2026, Ashok Kumar Panda has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), under the Ministry of Steel(MoS), effective from 9 May 2026.

  • He succeeded Krishna Kumar Singh, who was holding additional charge as interim MD & CEO after Amarendu Prakash stepped down on 1 April 2026.

About Ashok Kumar Panda:
Profile: He joined SAIL in 1992 as a Management Trainee(Technical) and has over three decades of experience across multiple plants and units in operational, financial, and commercial domains.
Previous Roles:  Before becoming CMD, he served as Director (Finance) and Director (Commercial) in SAIL, Nominee Director on the board of International Coal Ventures Limited (ICVL), a joint venture(JV) of SAIL and represented the company on the boards of other Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
SAIL Target: SAIL is on track to reach a massive production capacity of 35 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum), up from its current 20 MTPA. 

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Indian Coast Guard Commissions Indigenous FPV ‘ICGS ACHAL’ in Goa
In May 2026, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Achal, the fifth in the series of eight new-generation Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV), at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa, marking a key milestone in strengthening coastal security and operational readiness.

  • The ship was formally commissioned into service by A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary & Director General(DG) (Acquisition), Ministry of Defence(MoD) in the presence of Inspector General(IG) Tekur Sashi Kumar, Commander, Coast Guard Region (North-West), and senior officials of central, state and GSL officials.

About ICGS Achal: 
Indigenous Development: Built by GSL at a cost of Rs 473 crore with over 50% indigenous components, ICGS Achal supports the Government of India (GoI)’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Operational Role: Achal, meaning ‘firm’, will strengthen coastal security and offshore protection with indigenous controllable pitch propellers and high-precision gearboxes for smooth operations in varying sea conditions.
Deployment: ICGS Achal will be based at Vadinar, Gujarat, under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (North West).
Command & Crew: The ship is commanded by Commandant (Junior Grade, JG) Naveen Kumar with a crew of 5 officers and 34 personnel trained for advanced maritime operations.

DRDO Successfully Conducts 1,200-Second Scramjet Combustor Test in Hyderabad, Telangana
In May 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), through its laboratory Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), successfully conducted a long-duration test of an Actively Cooled Full-Scale Scramjet Combustor at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) Facility in Hyderabad, Telangana, achieving a run-time of over 1,200 seconds.

  • The test was conducted to validate the combustor design and strengthen India’s Hypersonic Cruise Missile Development Programme.
  • Ground tests successfully validated the design of the advanced active cooled scramjet combustor and the capabilities of the state-of-the-art SCPT Facility.

Agni MIRV Missile Test:
Test: India successfully conducted the flight trial of an advanced variant of the Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha, targeting multiple locations across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), using a single missile system and thereby enhancing defence preparedness.
Capabilities: The missile was equipped with advanced navigation, precision guidance and re-entry technologies capable of withstanding extreme atmospheric temperatures, with reported re-entry speeds nearing Mach 24 under the advanced Agni-5 programme.

Shanghai Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 2: India Women’s Recurve Team Wins Gold
In May 2026, the 20th edition of the Shanghai Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 2, was held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, from 5th May to 11th May 2026, where India won two medals, including a gold by the women’s recurve team and a bronze medal by Sahil Jadhav in the men’s individual compound event.

  • Türkiye topped the medal tally with 6 medals (2 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze), followed by China with 5 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and South Korea with 5 medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 2 Bronze).

About Archery World Cup Stage 2:
Overview: The 2026 Hyundai Archery World Cup is the annual international archery circuit organised by World Archery and is being held from 7 April to 13 September 2026 in 5 stages.
 India’s Gold Medal:

  • Gold: India’s women’s recurve team comprising Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Kumkum Mohod won the gold medal after defeating China 5-4 (28-26) in the shoot-off final following a comeback from 2-4 behind, marking India’s first women’s recurve team gold at the Archery World Cup since 2021.

Bronze: Sahil Jadhav won the bronze medal in the Men’s Individual Compound event after defeating Denmark’s Martin Damsbo 147-144, securing his first career Archery World Cup medal.

OBITUARY

Australian Tennis Legend Mal Anderson Passed Away
In May 2026, Australian tennis legend Mal Anderson, former World No. 2 ranking, passed away at the age of 91 in Australia. He was born on 3 March 1935, Theodore, Queensland, Australia.
About Mal Anderson:
Profile: He began playing tennis on a dirt court and went on to become one of Australia’s leading and most respected tennis players during the 1950s and 1970s.
Historic Achievement: In 1957, he became the first unseeded player to win the United States(U.S.) National Championships(now the US Open) men’s singles title by defeating fellow Australian Ashley Cooper in the final.
Major Achievements: He won multiple Grand Slam doubles titles, including the 1973 Australian Open doubles title, represented Australia in Davis Cup-winning teams in 1957 and 1973, and finished runner-up at the 1972 Australian Open title.
Honours: He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame (2000) and Australian Tennis Hall of Fame (2001), and was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1972.

World Migratory Bird Day 2026 – May 9
World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is a United Nations (UN)-supported global campaign, observed twice in a year i.e. on the second Saturday of May and October, to raise awareness about challenges faced by migratory birds and encourage action to conserve their habitats.

  • This year, WMBD 2026 falls on May 9 2026 and October 10 2026.

Background: 
Origin: The initiative was initially started in the United States of America(USA) in 1993 as International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), established by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, Washington, D.C., the USA.
Organisers: WMBD is jointly organized by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and Environment for the Americas (EFTA).
1st Observance: The first official WMBD was celebrated on April 8–9, 2006, at the ‘Ol Ari Nyiro’ wildlife reserve in Laikipia, Kenya, hosted by conservationist Kuki Gallmann.
Global Poster: The UN unveiled the WMBD 2026 global poster created by Brazilian artist Luisa Lacerda, featuring embroidered artwork of seven migratory birds from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

International Argania Day 2026 – May 10 
The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of Argania is annually observed across the globe on May 10 to raise awareness about the Argan tree (Argania spinosa), native to Morocco, and highlight its role as a symbol of cultural heritage, resilience, and sustainable development.

  • 10th May 2026 marks the observance of 6th International Day of Argania.

Background:
UNGA Resolution: In 2021, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/75/262, proclaiming May 10 as the International Day of Argania.
Sponsorship: The resolution was submitted by Morocco and co-sponsored by 113 UN member states before being adopted by consensus.
First Observance: The first International Day of Argania was observed on May 10, 2021.
