About James Dewey Watson:
Overview: He was a renowned American molecular biologist and geneticist.
DNA Structure Finding: In 1951, Watson joined the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge(USA), where he and Francis Crick, using X-radiation (X-ray) data from Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins, discovered the DNA double-helix in 1953, showing how adenine pairs with thymine and cytosine pairs with guanine.

IMPORTANT DAYS
International Day of Radiology 2025- November 8
International Day of Radiology (IDoR) or World Radiography Day is annually observed across the globe on 8 November to honor the vital role of radiographers and radiological technologists in healthcare.
- 8 November 2025 marks the 14th IDoR.
Exam Hints:
- Event: International Day of Radiology (IDoR) 2025
- When: November 8
- Edition: 14th IDoR
- Established: 2011 as a follow-up to the European Day of Radiology (EDoR)
- First Observed: 8 November 2012.
- Significance: Date Marks the anniversary of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays (1895).
Background:
Establishment: The IDoR was established in 2011 as a follow-up to the European Day of Radiology (EDoR), which was held once on 10 February 2011 to mark Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s death anniversary.
Formation of IDoR: The European Society of Radiology (ESR), in collaboration with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR), replaced the European Day of Radiology (EDoR) with the International Day of Radiology (IDoR).
Official Confirmation: The date, 8 November, was officially confirmed as the observance day during the RSNA annual meeting held on 28 November 2011 in Chicago, USA.
Significance: The day coincides with the anniversary of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895, a landmark in the history of radiology.
- She was a German physicist and the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics (1901).
First Observance: IDoR was first celebrated on November 8, 2012.
About Radiology:
Definition: Radiology is a medical specialty that employs imaging technology to detect and treat conditions affecting the human and animal body.
Types: Radiology is broadly classified into two types:
- Diagnostic Radiology, which uses imaging techniques such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound, X-ray and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound to detect diseases.
- Interventional Radiology, which employs imaging guidance for minimally invasive treatments and procedures.
Key facts:
Global Health Concern: Unsafe medical care is among the top 10 causes of death and disability worldwide.
Impact in LMICs: Each year, around 13.4 crore adverse events occur in hospitals across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to unsafe care, leading to about 26 lakh deaths.
Impact in High-Income Countries: In developed nations, one in every ten patients faces risks during hospital care, with nearly half of these incidents being preventable.
