The former Army Chief General and a former Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura, K.V. Krishna Rao died at military hospital in New Delhi. He was 92.
About Gen K V Krishna Rao:
1923 born Kotikalapudi Venkata Krishna Rao played a key role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. He started his career as an army officer during World War II, during which served in Burma, North West Frontier and Baluchistan.
- He was the 14th Chief of the Army Staff.
- Rao participated in the 1947-48 war against Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.
- He was a founder Instructor of the National Defence Academy during 1949-51.
- He commanded an Army Division in the 1971 war with Pakistan in the eastern theatre.
- He was instrumental in the capture of Sylhet area and liberation of North-East Bangladesh.
- He served as Deputy Chief of Army Staff at Army Headquarters during 1978-79.
- General Krishna Rao was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff on June 1, 1981.
- He retired as Chief of the Army Staff in 1983 and was appointed Governor of Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura in June 1984.
- He was governor of Jammu and Kashmir for the first time from July 11, 1989 to January 19, 1990 and then from March 13, 1993 till May 2, 1998.
Awards:
He was awarded the Param Vishist Seva Medal for displaying outstanding leadership and courage.
