IIM Udaipur Partners with MoSPI, NITI Aayog, Bhashini to Enhance India’s Data, Monitoring, & AI Ecosystem
In September 2025, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Udaipur (Rajasthan) signed strategic collaborations with Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI), National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, and Bhashini, to strengthen India’s capabilities in data, monitoring & evaluation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem.

Key Details of Partnership:
MoSPI: IIM Udaipur signed an MoU with MoSPI to tackle statistical challenges and promote data analytics, serving as a knowledge partner for MoSPI’s Data Innovation Lab.
NITI Aayog: IIM Udaipur signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with Development Monitoring & Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog to develop toolkits, training programs, and conduct evaluation studies, with its Centre for Development Policy and Management (CDPM) supporting India’s monitoring and evaluation ecosystem.
Bhashini:IIM Udaipur joined Bhashini under “Anusandhan Mitra” to develop regional hubs, strengthen datasets for under-represented languages, upskill students, and advance Indian language technologies.

DEPwD Partners Ministry of AYUSH to Launch Rs. 5.26 Cr Initiative for PwDsIn September 2025, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), has partnered with the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) to launch integrative rehabilitation initiatives for persons with disabilities (PwDs).

• The initiative was sanctioned during the 19th Governing Body Meeting of the National Fund for PwDs, chaired by Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary of DEPwD in New Delhi, Delhi.

Key Details of  Partnership:
Funding: A total of Rs. 5.26 crore has been sanctioned under the National Fund for PwDs. 
Implementation: The projects will be implemented through the national institutes such as the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) in Secunderabad(Telangana); Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTAR) in Odisha, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (AYJNISHD) in Mumbai(Maharashtra); and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (PDUNIPPD) in New Delhi.
Sanctioned projects: Key initiatives include the establishment of an AYUSH Centre for Research in Neurodiversity at NIEPID.

• At SVNIRTAR, Ayurvedic formulations like Raktamrut Vati will be studied for managing blood disorders.
• AYJNISHD will research the effects of Yoga on the mental and emotional well-being of students with hearing impairments and their families.
• At PDUNIPPD, projects focus on combining Yoga with occupational therapy for older adults, comparing Ayurvedic Panchakarma with physiotherapy for knee osteoarthritis, and testing Ayurvedic herbal treatments against insulin for diabetic adhesive capsulitis.

Alignment : The collaboration aligns with Rights of PwDs Act, 2016 and UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, promoting inclusive healthcare.

Overview of Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s Visit to UAE from September 18 to 19, 2025Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoC&I) visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 18 to 19, 2025 to enhance trade and investment ties and to expand cooperation in education, technology, and emerging sectors.

• Union Minister Piyush Goyal was accompanied by the large Indian business delegation which included representatives from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), and the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

Key Highlights of the Visit:
13th India-UAE HLJTFI:Union Minister Piyush Goyal co-chaired the 13th India-UAE HLJTFI along with Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Managing Director (MD) of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

• During the meeting, both countries reviewed the progress on the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEPA) which came into force in May 2022, the Double Taxation Treaty (DTT), and UAE-India Central Bank matters.

UAE-India Business Council (UIBC): During his visit to the UAE, Union Minister Goyal co-chaired the UAE-India Business Council (UIBC) roundtable with Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade of the UAE, held in Abu Dhabi, the UAE.

• During the meeting, India and the UAE have agreed to achieve USD 100 billion in non-oil, non-precious metals bilateral trade over the next 3 years.
• Both countries have identified new sectors of cooperation including, maritime, space, defense, and aerospace, data centers, pharmaceuticals, food processing, fisheries, textiles, leather, and home decors.

India Elected as Member of INTERPOL Asian Committee at 25th Asian Regional ConferenceIn September 2025, India was elected as a member of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) Asian Committee for the term 2025-29 during the 25th Asian Regional Conference held from September 18 – 19, 2025 at the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) in Singapore.

• This election, conducted through a multi-stage voting process, marks a significant enhancement of India’s role in international law enforcement cooperation.

India’s Membership:
Delegation: India was represented by a delegation from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Efforts: The successful election followed diplomatic efforts by Indian missions, the National Central Bureau (NCB-India), embassies, and high commissions engaging bilaterally and multilaterally.
Significance: It will enhance cooperative efforts to address pressing transnational challenges such as organized crime, cybercrime, human trafficking, terrorism, and drug trafficking.
Contribution: As a member, India will actively help shape the strategic and operational priorities of regional law enforcement initiatives.
Role of INTERPOL Asian Committee:
Purpose: The INTERPOL Asian Committee advises the Asian Regional Conference and facilitates deliberations by providing understanding of strategic and operational law enforcement issues in Asia.

WTO Report 2025: AI to Boost Trade by Nearly 40% by 2040In September 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) released its annual World Trade Report 2025 (WTR) titled “Making trade and AI work together to the benefit of all” at the annual WTO Public Forum in Switzerland. The report highlights that artificial intelligence (AI) could increase global trade by nearly 40% by 2040.
Highlights of WTR 2025:
AI Impact: As per the report, AI could lead to significant increases in global trade, which is projected to rise by 34% to 37% by 2040, with the largest growth expected in the trade of digitally deliverable services.

• The AI is also projected to generate substantial global Gross Domestic Product(GDP) increases, ranging from 12 to 13% across scenarios.
• Also, it was found that nearly 90% of firms using AI report clear benefits in trade-related activities, with 56% noting improved trade risk management.

Productivity: A recent estimate suggests that AI could boost annual growth in Total Factor Productivity(TFP) by approximately 0.68% points.
AI enabled Goods Trade: In 2023, global trade in AI-enabling goods – including raw materials, semiconductors and intermediate inputs valued at USD 2.3 trillion(tn).
AI Patents: WTO analysis states that a 10% rise in digital services trade links to a 2.6% increase in AI patent citations across countries.

PhonePe Received RBI’s Final Approval to Operate as PA
In September 2025, Walmart-backed PhonePe Limited (Formerly PhonePe Private Limited), one of India’s leading fintech companies has secured the final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as online Payment Aggregator (PA) under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act (PSS Act, 2007).

• Following this approval, the company will be able to expand its merchant network with a focus on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

In September 2025, Oil India Limited (OIL), a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Mines(MoM), to collaborate on exploration and development of critical and strategic minerals such as copper and associated minerals.

• The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. Ranjit Rath, Chairman & Managing Director(CMD) of OIL, and Sanjiv Kumar Singh, CMD of HCL.

Objective: Collaboration leverages OIL’s exploration expertise and HCL’s mineral processing capabilities to secure strategic resources essential for India’s energy security, industrial growth, and technological advancement.

• The Film Federation of India (FFI) announced India’s Oscar entry in Kolkata(WestBengal, WB), with N Chandra chairing a 14-member selection jury.

Story Overview: Homebound is a Hindi-language drama inspired by Basharat Peer’s 2020 New York Times essay titled “Taking Amrit Home”.

Teams & Archers: Six franchise teams comprising 48 archers, with 36 Indians and 12 international players.

• Each team will have 8 members (4 men and 4 women), with a maximum of 2 foreign players.

World Water Monitoring Day 2025 – September 18World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is observed annually across the globe on 18 September every year to raise awareness on water quality issues and encourage public participation in safeguarding water resources.

Background:
Establishment: WWMD was established in 2003 by the American Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) as a global educational initiative.

• The program was later renamed as the EarthEcho Water Challenge (EEWC), formerly known as the World Water Monitoring Challenge (WWMC), to enhance public awareness and engagement in global water conservation.

Inception: The inaugural World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) was celebrated on 18 October 2003.
Date Revision: Initially, WWMD was observed on 18 October to honour the United States of America(USA) Clean Water Act of 1972.

• In 2007, the official date was changed to 18 September to enable wider global participation, especially in regions where water bodies freeze in October.

Key Developments of WWMD: In 2006, the coordination of WWMD was transferred from the ACWF to the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA).

• In 2015, the coordination of WWMD was taken over by EarthEcho International, an environmental non-profit organisation

Program: A flagship program that empowers youth as community scientists to test local water, share data globally, and promote actions to protect waterways.

Background:
Adoption: On 8 December 2024, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/78/122, proclaiming 20 September of every year as World Cleanup Day.
Recommendation and Facilitation:This observance was recommended by the United Nations Habitat Assembly in its resolution 2/3 on 9 June 2023.

• The resolution also calls on the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to support and facilitate the observance of World Cleanup Day.

First Observance: The day was first celebrated on 18 September 2024.
2025 Event: 
Focus: This year’s focus is on textile and fashion waste, one of the most visible and fast-growing environmental challenges.
Event: The UN-Habitat and its partners are commemorating the day with a dialogue event at the United Nations Office and a community cleanup in Nairobi(Kenya).
Key Facts: Every second, a garbage truck of clothes is dumped or burned. The fashion industry produces 92 million tonnes(MT) of textile waste annually, straining waste systems, polluting waterways, and driving the climate crisis.

Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE):
Led by the South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) and supported by the World Bank(WB), the initiative aims to reduce marine plastic pollution and encourage innovation in plastic use and production.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA): Also called the Clean India Mission, launched in 2014 to make India cleaner and eliminate open defecation and litter.

Indian Railways Renamed Ahmednagar Railway Station as ‘Ahilyanagar’ in Maharashtra
In September 2025, Indian Railways(IR) officially renamed the Ahmednagar Railway Station of Pune Division in Maharashtra to Ahilyanagar as a tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th-century Maratha queen renowned for her contributions to public welfare and governance.

About Ahilyanagar Railway Station: 
Approval: The renaming was implemented after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved the proposal submitted by the Maharashtra government.
Background: This decision aligns with the Government of Maharashtra’s move to rename Ahmednagar district as Ahilyanagar district.
Implementation: The new name Ahilyanagar will be reflected across all platforms, timetables, and signage, while the railway station code ‘ANG’ will remain unchanged.
