In June 2025, Pakistan has been appointed as Chair of the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee (TSC) and Vice-Chair of 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) as part of its 2025-26 term as non-permanent member of United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
- Apart from it, Pakistan has been appointed co-chair of the Informal Working Groups on Documentation and on the General UNSC Sanctions Issues.
- As per the list of chairs of the subsidiary bodies of the UNSC, Denmark has been appointed as Chair of 1267 ISIL( Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the UNSC; while Russia and Sierra Leone have appointed as its Vice-Chairs.
About 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee (TSC):
i.In July 2011, UNSC unanimously adopted resolution 1988 (2011), focusing on the presence of terrorists & their sponsors in the region of Afghanistan.
ii.The committee includes all 15 members of UNSC and makes its decisions by consensus.
iii.The committee is mandated to monitor the implementation of the sanction measures; designate individuals and entities who meet the listing criteria as contained in relevant resolutions; conduct periodic reviews of the entries on the 1988 Sanctions list, among others.
v.Committee receives support from Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team pursuant to resolutions 1526 (2004) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and the Taliban and associated individuals.
iv.Asim Aftikhar Ahmad (Pakistan) has been appointed as chair of TSC for the period ending on December 31, 2025.
- While, Russia and Guyana have been appointed as two Vice-Chairs of TSC for 2025.
About 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC):
i.The UNSC adopted Resolution 1373 on September 28, 2001 in response to the terrorist attacks in the United States of America (USA) on September 11, 2001.
- Through this resolution, a dedicated CTC of the council was established and is assisted by Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED).
ii.The committee comprises all 15 members of UNSC, was tasked with monitoring implementation of resolution.
iii.The resolution requested countries to implement a number of measures aimed to enhance their legal and institutional ability to counter terrorist activities at home:
- Criminalize the financing of terrorism; freeze without delay any funds related to persons involved in acts of terrorism; deny all forms of financial support for terrorist groups; among others.
iv.Algeria has been appointed as Chair of 1373 CTC, while France, Pakistan and Russia have been appointed as its Vice-Chairs.
Note: India has served as the chair of the UNSC CTC for 2022 during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of UNSC.

i.UNSC is one of the 6 principal organs of the UN. It comprises total 15 member countries which includes 5 permanent members: the USA, China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom (UK) and 10 non-permanent members.

ii.In June 2025, UNSC has selected 5 new non-permanent members through secret ballot for a 2 year term starting on January 1, 2026 until December 31, 2027.
- Name of the newly elected non-permanent members in the council are: Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Liberia, Latvia and Colombia.
