Jal Jeevan Mission Completes 7 years: Rural Tap Coverage Rises from 16.7% to over 82%
On August 15 2026, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) completed seven years of implementation, with rural tap-water coverage rising to over 15.91 crore (Cr) households.

  • More than 2 lakh villages across the country have now been declared as ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certified under the JJM.

About Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM):
Objective: The JJM launched by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on 15 August 2019 aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024, targeting 55 litres per person per day.

  • The Union Cabinet later extended the JJM deadline to December 2028, ensuring comprehensive water supply infrastructure.

Implementation: The mission is implemented by the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS), specifically under the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation(DDWS).
Funding Pattern: It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). The Funding Pattern between Central and states are:

  • 90:10 for Himalayan and North-East (NE) states
  • 100% by central government for Union Territories (UTs)
  • 50:50 for other states.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi Inaugurates CBDC-Based DBT For PMGKAY Beneficiaries In Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli
In August 2026, Union Minister  Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD), formally inaugurated a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of food subsidies under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) for the Union Territories (UTs) of Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, marking the first large-scale adoption of CBDC in a central government-backed  welfare programme.

  • Following the launch, UTs of  Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli  became the first State/UT in the country to operationalize food subsidy transfers to all PMGKAY beneficiaries directly into their CBDC wallets. 

About CBDC-Based DBT For PMGKAY:
New Disbursement Process: Under the new system, the central government will transfer the food subsidy directly into the eligible beneficiary’s Digital Rupee wallet, instead of a conventional bank account, following which,  beneficiary can  use the purpose-bound digital subsidy to purchase foodgrains from empanelled merchants through a secure, traceable and real-time digital payment mechanism.
About PMGKAY: The GoI launched the PMGKAY, recognised as the world’s largest food security program, in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the objective of providing free food grains to over 80 crore vulnerable citizens of the country.

  • The scheme is managed by the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DoFPD), MoCAF&PD.

NITI Aayog Releases Report on Regulatory Framework for India’s Professional Services Sector
In August 2026, the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) released a 3rd report under its Services Thematic  series, titled “India’s Services Sector: Insights on Regulatory Regime in Professional Services”,  providing the assessment of  India’s regulatory framework for professional services.

  • The report was formally launched by Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, at a meeting of the High-Powered ‘Education to Employment and Enterprise’ Standing Committee held in New Delhi, Delhi.

Key Findings:
Aim: To identify challenges and policy measures to strengthen the professional services sector and unlock the potential of India’s skilled Contribution to Services Exports: As per the report, Professional services account for nearly 1/4th (25%) of India’s total services exports.
Four-pronged Strategy: The report suggested a four-pronged strategy which includes, harnessing emerging trends to transform professional services, elevating professional services within the wider services value chain, adopting global best practices, and promoting continuous professional development.
Regulatory Barriers: The report outlines several regulatory barriers in India  that can impede the growth of  the sector, which include nationality and residency requirements, educational qualifications, licensing rules, recognition of foreign qualifications and restrictions on the permitted forms of business establishment, among others.

MoD Signs Rs.1,577 Crore Contracts with TASL and NIBE for Loiter Munition Systems
In August 2026, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed contracts worth approximately Rs.1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and NIBE Private Limited for the procurement of Loiter Munition Systems for the Indian Army (IA).

  • The contracts were signed in the presence of Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, MoD in New Delhi, Delhi, with both manufacturers required to complete delivery within 12 months.

About Procurement Framework:
Objective: The procurement aims to strengthen the IA’s battlefield and precision strike capabilities, enhance the operational preparedness of artillery units, and modernise combat capabilities through indigenous defence systems.
Framework: The procurement, including Loiter Munition Systems with munitions and accessories, is being executed under the Buy (Indian) category via the Fast Track Procedure (FTP) to boost indigenous defence manufacturing and support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Order Allocation: The order has been allocated to TASL (L1 Vendor) for 64% of the order, including the supply of 54 munition systems and 540 loitering munitions, while NIBE (L2 Vendor) will supply 30 munition systems and 300 loitering munitions under 36% of the order.

NIELIT Launches Cyber Kushti 2026 National Cybersecurity AI Hackathon To Test Human Judgment Skills 
In August 2026, the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), launched Cyber Kushti 2026, a national cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI) hackathon.

  • The initiative was launched as part of the technical programme of the 3rd National Conference on Cyber Security, Digital Forensics and Intelligence (NCCDFI 2026) held at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, Delhi.

About Cyber Kushti 2026:
Objective: The hackathon aims to evaluate and recognise human judgment in cybersecurity by testing decision-making in AI-driven scenarios beyond simple vulnerability detection, with registration open until 10 September 2026.
Organiser: The initiative was organised by NIELIT in collaboration with the Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) Foundation under the National Security Database (NSD), with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) as knowledge partner.
Features: Participants receive a standard Security Assessment Package containing AI-generated findings, logs, source code, and scans with genuine, duplicate, and false vulnerabilities requiring evaluation and justification.
Participation: The competition features three rounds: Akhada (15 September 2026), Dangal (24 September 2026), and the Kesari final (9 October 2026) and is open to students and independent researchers in teams of three, with free registration from 15 August to 10 September 2026.
Awards: Winning team receives “Cyber Kesari 2026” title and Gada, while runners-up receive “Rustam” and “Pahalwan”; participants get certificates and NSD credits.

About NIELIT: It is a society that provides Information Technology and Electronics training at various levels, headquartered in New Delhi, Delhi, established on 9 November 1994, and headed by Director General (DG) Madan Mohan Tripathi.

NABARD Launches RSVC-AMRIT Platform for Rural Innovation
On 15 August 2026, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India (GoI), Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, launched the RSVC-AMRIT platform, developed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (OPSA), to strengthen rural innovation and technology transfer.

  • The launch event was  attended by Dr. Shaji Krishnan V., Chairman, NABARD, along with representatives from various stakeholder organisations.

Key Highlights of the RSVC-AMRIT Platform: 
Digital Ecosystem: RSVC-AMRIT serves as the digital backbone of the RuTAGe Smart Village Centre (RSVC) ecosystem, enabling technology discovery, validation, deployment tracking, monitoring and knowledge management.
Technology Transfer: The platform connects innovators, startups, technology providers, academic institutions, funding agencies and rural communities to promote grassroots technology adoption.
RSVC Initiative: The initiative transfers affordable technologies in sectors like agriculture, rural enterprises, renewable energy, education, water and sanitation, with NABARD supporting 8 RSVCs and developing Accelerated Medium for Rural Innovations and Technologies (AMRIT) as a national repository of rural innovations and best practices.
Implementation: NABARD will establish RSVCs through partnerships with OPSA, NABFOUNDATION, and corporates under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, with NABFOUNDATION as the implementation partner.

About NABARD: NABARD, established in 1982 and headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, is India’s apex development financial institution for agriculture and rural development, headed by Chairman Dr. Shaji Krishnan V. (Shaji K.V.).

MIDHANI Becomes First Indian Company to Secure GE Aerospace S400 Lab Approval
In August 2026, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), a state-owned defence and aerospace materials manufacturer under Ministry of Defence(MoD), became the first company in India to secure Independent and International Metallic Material Laboratory (S400) approval from an American aerospace company GE Aerospace for conducting a wide range of chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical testing of high-performance metallic materials and aerospace alloys.
About S400 Approval: 
Overview: It is a specialised material testing laboratory specification and certification programme developed by GE Aerospace to approve and audit Certified Material Test Laboratories (CMTLs) and ensure quality and process control standards for testing high-performance aerospace alloys.
Ecosystem & Capabilities: The approval enables MIDHANI to expand into advanced aerospace materials such as superalloys and titanium alloys, while strengthening its capabilities in metallic material testing, aerospace-grade qualification, and quality assurance systems.
Recognition: The achievement reflects MIDHANI’s technical excellence, commitment to global quality standards, and advanced materials testing capabilities.
About MIDHANI: Established in 1973, MIDHANI is a Miniratna Category-I Schedule-B Public Sector Undertaking(PSU) and is headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana.

CCRAS-NIIMH Signs MoU with SEMIRI for Digitization of Medical Manuscripts 
In August 2026, the National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH) under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sevadhi Museum & Indological Research Institute (SEMIRI) (Kumaranalloor, Kottayam, Kerala) for the systematic digitization and preparation of a descriptive catalogue of its collection of medical manuscripts. 

  • The collaboration aims to preserve, document and improve accessibility to India’s traditional medical knowledge heritage..

Key Details of MoU:
Objective: The partnership aims to protect valuable manuscript resources related to Kerala’s traditional medical and intellectual heritage.
Key Role of CCRAS-NIIMH: NIIMH will provide technical and scholarly expertise for manuscript digitisation and preparation of descriptive catalogues.
Descriptive Catalogue: The catalogue will record important manuscript details such as title, author, subject, script and language as per the Ayush Manuscripts Advanced Repository format.
Support Collaborative Research in Manuscripts: The initiative will create an accessible digital resource to support future research, critical editions and scholarly publications on Indian manuscript heritage.
About NIIMH: The National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), located in Hyderabad, Telangana, is a peripheral institute of CCRAS under the Ministry of Ayush. It works towards the documentation, preservation, research and promotion of Indian medical heritage, including manuscripts, rare books and historical records related to Indian systems of medicine.

RBI Imposes Rs. 59.20 Lakh Monetary Penalty on IndusInd Bank for Regulatory Non-Compliance
In August 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of Rs.59.20 lakh on IndusInd Bank Limited for non-compliance with certain provisions of RBI directions on Interest Rate on Deposits and Securitisation of Standard Assets.

  • This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers conferred on RBI under the provisions of Section 47A(1)(c) read with section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

About RBI Action:
Reasons for Penalty: The RBI identified two major regulatory violations by IndusInd Bank: payment of interest on certain current account deposits in violation of RBI directions and undertaking activities in the nature of Synthetic Securitisation of standard assets against RBI guidelines.
Compliance: The penalty was imposed following the Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE) conducted by the RBI with reference to IndusInd Bank’s financial position as of 31 March 2025.
About IndusInd Bank Limited: Established in 1994, it is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and carries the tagline “We Make You Feel Richer”.

SpaceX Sets record with Two Falcon 9 Launches Just 38 minutes Apart
In August 2026, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation(SpaceX) launched two Falcon 9 rockets, with one carrying eight Globalstar satellites from Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, the United States of America (USA) and another carrying the classified  United States Space Force (USSF)-366 mission for the US Space Force from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the USA, setting a company record with a shortest launch gap of just 38.5 minutes.
Key Details of Launch:
About Globalstar Satellites: As per SpaceX, the 1st Falcon 9 launch vehicle successfully deployed all 8 satellites for Louisiana(the USA)-based  telecommunications company Globalstar into the designated Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

  • Globalstar Booster (B1090) landed back successfully at Cape Canaveral’s Landing Zone 40 nearly 8 minutes after the launch, marking its 14th space mission.

About Classified USSF-366: The 2nd Falcon 9 rocket used for USSF-366 completed its 1st stage landing around 8.5 minutes after the launch, landed on SpaceX’s droneship “Of Course I Still Love You” in the Pacific Ocean, marking its 18th mission.

  • The USSF-366 mission was conducted for the USSF and is believed to involve a classified national security payload.

Kawa UAV Conducts Maiden Flight of Divyastra Mk3 Loitering Munition
In August 2026, Kawa UAV Pvt. Ltd. (Hoverit) successfully conducted the maiden flight of Divyastra Mk3, India’s first indigenous jet-powered loitering munition, at Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP), developed with an indigenous jet engine by DG Propulsion.
Key Highlights: 
Indigenous Development: Divyastra Mk3 was developed completely in India without imported jet engines or foreign critical subsystems, supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing.
Features: The platform uses a jet engine instead of conventional propeller propulsion, offering higher speed, extended range and reduced reaction time for enemy defence systems during combat operations.
Development Milestone: The system achieved its maiden flight within 1 year of programme initiation, highlighting rapid indigenous defence innovation.

Magnus Carlsen wins Esports World Cup Chess Title 2026 for Second Consecutive Year
Norwegian chess Grandmaster (GM) and World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, representing Team Liquid, won the Esports World Cup Chess title 2026 for the second consecutive year in Paris, France, from  August 11 to 15, 2026, defeating Belarusian GM Denis Lazavik 2–0 (3–1, 3–1) in the final and remaining completely undefeated throughout the tournament.

  • Hikaru Nakamura (United States of America, (USA) Team Falcons) secured third place with USD 145,000, while Alireza Firouzja (France, Team Falcons) finished fourth, earning USD 100,000.

About Esports World Cup Chess 2026:
Overview:  The Esports World Cup Chess 2026 is a global esports chess tournament, featuring top international players competing in an online-integrated competitive format.
Edition: It marked the second edition of the event, following the inaugural 2025 edition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

National Award-Winning Sculptor Chandrashekhar Shilpi Passed Away at 75
In August 2026, renowned sculptor and master craftsman Chandrashekhar Y. Shilpi, passed away in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, at the age of 75. He was born in Kakkera village in Yadgir district, Karnataka.

  • He was known for preserving traditional sculptural heritage through intricate wood, stone, and Panchaloha art rooted in classical Indian temple architecture, particularly in the Kalyana Karnataka region.

About Chandrashekhar Y. Shilpi:
Training: He underwent 18 years of Gurukul training in wood sculpture at Gonal village under master craftsman Nadoja Naganna Monappa Badiger and later self-learned stone and Panchaloha sculpting techniques.
Art & Works: His creations, ranging from temple doors, pillars, mantapas, wooden halls, ornamental frames, and deity idols were inspired by Chalukya, Hoysala, Chola, Rashtrakuta, and Pallava traditions and followed the principles of Shilpa Shastra and Vastu Shastra, with works across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu (TN), Andhra Pradesh (AP), Maharashtra, and abroad.
Roles: He served as a member of the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy (1998–2001) and contributed to selection committees for major sculpture awards.
Awards: He received the National Award for Master Craftspersons 2024, Karnataka Rajyotsava Award 2014, and Karnataka Shilpakala Academy honorary award 2012.

Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Scheme Formally Launched in West Bengal
On 16 August 2026, Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal(WB), formally launched the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium, Kolkata, WB along with the Mukhyamantri Swasthya Bima Yojana to expand healthcare coverage.

  • The launch event was attended by Union Minister of State(MoS) Anupriya Patel, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

About Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY:
Overview: It is a centrally sponsored health assurance scheme launched by the Government of India(GoI) in September 2018 under the Ayushman Bharat(AB) initiative.

  • It is implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
  • The scheme provides health coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to eligible families.

Coverage: The scheme will be available across around 2,000 government and private hospitals in West Bengal, covering all citizens aged above 70, including around 35 lakh elderly beneficiaries in the state.
State Health Scheme: The Mukhyamantri Swasthya Bima Yojana was launched to provide health insurance coverage to families not covered under Ayushman Bharat, targeting around 80 lakh families in WB.

Meghalaya CM  Conrad K. Sangma Inaugurates CoE for Eri Silk Weaving 
On 14 August 2026, Meghalaya Chief Minister (CM)  Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Eri Silk Weaving at the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex (ITTC), Ri Sai, Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi district, as part of the 12th National Handloom Day(August 7) celebrations and the culmination of National Handloom Week.

  • Eri Silk, also known as Ryndia, is an indigenous silk variety originating from Meghalaya.

About CoE for Eri Silk Weaving:
Objective: The Centre aims to preserve and promote traditional Eri weaving skills and techniques while ensuring their transfer to future generations.
Features: The CoE promotes Ahimsa Silk training, design development, innovation, tourism, and artisan support.
Women Empowerment: Meghalaya’s handloom sector supports over 50,000 households, with women contributing more than 70% of the workforce, especially in Ri-Bhoi district.
Sector Strengthening: Meghalaya has promoted the Eri silk sector through Umden-Diwon Eri Silk Village (2021), Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for Ryndia and Khasi handlooms (2024–25), and government support via looms, yarn and the Cluster Development Programme (CDP).
