24 coastal villages from 6 districts of Odisha have been officially recognised as ‘Tsunami Ready’ by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
- This Tsunami Ready Recognition Certificates was presented during the 2nd Global Tsunami Symposium in Indonesia on 11th November 2024.
- These villages are located in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam districts.
Key Points:
i.These 24 coastal villages were recognised by the National Tsunami Ready Recognition Board.
- The 24 villages conducted various activities like training of stakeholders, community awareness programmes, preparation of tsunami management plans, conducting mock drills and identification of evacuation routes to improve disaster preparedness and community resilience in tsunami-prone areas.
ii.The members of the board include scientists of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and officers of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
iii.The board member visited these coastal villages for verification of the 12 indicators on which they were judged in September 2024.

Additional info:
i.Additionally, Tsunami Ready Recognition Certificates were renewed for 2 villages – Noliasahi in Jagatsinghpur district and Venkatraipur in Ganjam district. They were recognised as Tsunami Ready in 2020.
ii.Now Odisha has 381 Tsunami-prone coastal villages and habitations.
iii.The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) is working towards making the coastal communities of all tsunami-prone habitations as ‘Tsunami Ready’.
