WHO’s Global TB Report 2023: Globally 7.5mn People were Diagnosed with TB in 2022
According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report 2023, 7.5 million people across the globe were newly diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) in 2022, the highest ever since records began in 1995.

  • However, it also highlights a positive global recovery in TB diagnosis and treatment services in 2022, indicating a reversal of the negative impact caused by COVID-19 disruptions.

Assessment:
The report assessed data from 192 countries and areas (out of 215) with more than 99% of the world’s population and TB burden.
Highlights:
i.India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, responsible for over 60% of the global decline in new TB cases in 2020 and 2021, surpassed 2019 levels of diagnosis in 2022.
ii.Globally, an estimated 10.6 million people developed TB in 2022, up from best estimates of 10.3 million in 2021 and 10.0 million in 2020.
iii. Most people who developed TB were in the WHO regions of South-East Asia (46%),
Africa (23%) and the Western Pacific (18%).
iv.TB-related deaths in 2022, including those with HIV (Human immunodeficiency Viruses), were 1.3 million, a decrease from 1.4 million in 2021.

  • TB remains the leading cause of death among people with HIV.

v.COVID-19 disruptions led to nearly half a million additional TB deaths during the 2020-2022 period.
vi.In 2022, 410,000 people developed multidrug-resistant TB(MDR-TB) or rifampicin-resistant TB(RR-TB); only 2 in 5 accessed treatment.

  • The report noted that MDR-TB remains a public health crisis.

Insufficient Progress to meet global TB targets set in 2018:
i.Despite progress in 2022, global TB targets set in 2018 were unmet due to pandemic disruptions and conflicts.
ii.TB-related deaths decreased by 19% from 2015 to 2022, falling short of the WHO’s 75% reduction goal by 2025.
iii.TB incidence rate dropped by 8.7% from 2015 to 2022, far from the WHO’s 50% reduction target by 2025.

v.UN High-Level Meeting on TB targets for 2018-2022 were not achieved; only 84% of 40 million people targeted for TB treatment and 52% of 30 million people targeted for preventive treatment were reached.
New Targets:
The 2023 UN High-Level Meeting on TB reaffirmed 2018 commitments and set new goals for 2023-2027, including 90% coverage for TB prevention and care, rapid TB tests, comprehensive benefits for patients, a safe new TB vaccine, and closing funding gaps by 2027.
