MoHUA Launched Jal Diwali – ‘Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign’Jal Diwali -Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign launchedMinistry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched Jal Diwali – Water for Women, Women for Water’ awareness campaign under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), flagship scheme of MoHUA, in partnership with National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM).

  • Jal Diwali, the first phase of the Water for Women, Women for Water campaign, will be held from 7th to 9th November 2023.
  • Odisha Urban Academy is the knowledge partner of this campaign

About the Campaign:
i.The campaign empowers women in water governance by offering firsthand insights into water treatment processes and safe drinking water distribution through visits to local Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) in their cities.
ii.The campaign aims to instill ownership and responsibility for water infrastructure.
Phase I:
i.The Phase I will include the participation from all states and Union Territories(UTs) — except the 5 states under Model Code of Conduct. Around 15000 Self Help Groups (SHG) women across India are expected to participate in the campaign.
ii.Focus areas:

  • Familiarizing the women with functioning of Water Treatment Plants & water testing facilities
  • Promote inclusivity & involvement through souvenirs & articles created by Women SHGs
  • Familiarizing & educating the women about AMRUT scheme & its impact on water infrastructure

Expected outcomes:
i.Women in the program will learn about water treatment plants and quality testing.
ii.Women SHGs will create souvenirs to promote active involvement in water management.
iii.Program will educates women about AMRUT scheme and water infrastructure impact.
iv.Participants gain insights into clean water provision and quality testing.

Union Finance Minister inaugurates 1st Global Conference on Cooperation in Enforcement Matters (GCCEM) in New DelhiUnion Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurates the first Global Conference on Cooperation in Enforcement Mattersi.The first Global Conference on Cooperation in Enforcement Matters (GCCEM) was held in New Delhi, Delhi from 30th October to 1st November 2023. The conference was inaugurated by Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance (MoF).

  • The theme of 1st GCCEM was ‘It takes a Network to fight a Network’.

ii.The conference was organised by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), under Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in consultation with World Customs Organisation (WCO), Brussels in Belgium.
iii.The Union Minister of State (MoS) Pankaj Chaudhary,  MoF was the Guest of Honour and Secretary General, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, WCO was the Special Guest at the Inaugural Session.
iv.The Union Finance Minister also launched phase IV of ‘Operation Sesha’ by Indian Customs in collaboration with RILO Asia-Pacific and RILO Middle-East to curb the illegal trade of Timber including Red Sanders.

UK Government Hosted World’s 1st Artificial Intelligence Safety Summit 2023 World's first Artificial Intelligence Safety Summit begins The United Kingdom (UK) Government hosted the world’s 1st global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire (UK) on November 1-2, 2023. This 2-day summit brought together Ministers and representatives from various countries, including the UK, the United States of America (USA), and India, among others.

  • This summit aimed to unite world leaders and prominent tech industry giants focussed on devising a comprehensive, collaborative strategy to mitigate risks and combat the misuse of AI technologies.
  • The Summit also witnessed the signing of the Bletchley Declaration by 28 countries and the launching of the world’s 1st AI Safety Institute.

Delegates from 28 nations, including India, the USA, China, and the European Union have signed the world’s 1st agreement known as the “Bletchley Declaration,” during the ‘AI Safety Summit 2023’ and pledged to cooperate, to promote the safe use of AI tools.
During the AI Safety Summit 2023, UK Prime Minister (PM) Rishi Sunak launched the world’s 1st AI Safety Institute in the UK to examine, evaluate, and test new types of AI. The launch represents the UK’s commitment to the global initiative on AI safety testing.

UN and IAEA Collaborating on New Collection to Honour Marie CurieUN and IAEA collaborating on new collection coming to stamp counterUnited Nations(UN) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) collaborated to create a new stamp collection  and first-day envelopes to honour Marie Curie (Maria Salomea Skłodowska-Curie) on her 156th birth anniversary which was observed on 7th November 2023 .
Stamp and Envelop:
i.United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA), the postal agency of the United Nations, has released a definitive set of stamps featuring Marie Curie portrait and first-day envelopes adorned with a new IAEA distinctive cachet.
ii.The commemorative envelope also honors the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP).
Note: 
i.UNPA is the only postal authority that issues stamps in three different currencies namely United States Dollars(USD), Swiss francs and euros.
ii.The stamps may be used for postage when used on mail sent from the United Nations offices in New York, Geneva or Vienna.

i.Marie Curie was born on 7 November 1867.
ii.She is a Polish-born physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity.
iii.She is remembered for discovering radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to finding cancer treatments.
iv.She is also the only person ever to receive two Nobel Prizes in different fields of science: for physics in 1903 and for chemistry in 1911.
MSCFP:
i.The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) is an international fellowship programme offered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
ii.The program aims to support talented female scientists pursuing doctoral degrees in nuclear science and technology.

Canara HSBC Launched ‘GAIN’ Life Insurance Plan for Customers of Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank
Canara HSBC Life Insurance, an insurance company sponsored by Canara Bank and HSBC, has launched a new guaranteed income plan named the ‘Guaranteed Assured Income’ (GAIN) for the customers of Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) in Mangaluru (Karnataka).

  • It is a Non-Linked Non-Participating Individual Life Insurance Savings cum Protection Plan that ensures guaranteed benefits as well as regular income to take care of both long-term and short-term financial goals.
  • It offers a guaranteed regular income stream with the flexibility to get the premiums back at the end of the policy term. This policy is available in all the 629 Branches of KVGB.

IndusInd Bank launches ‘Platinum RuPay Credit Card’ with UPI Integration
IndusInd Bank Ltd launched the ‘IndusInd Bank Platinum RuPay Credit Card’ in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), enabling customers to make payments through the RuPay network using Point of Sale (POS) devices and e-commerce websites.

  • IndusInd Bank RuPay credit card customers can now conveniently initiate the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments by simply linking their credit cards with the UPI-enabled Apps.
  • With the integration of the card on UPI, individuals can make transactions seamlessly on both online and offline platforms and earn accelerated rewards on their UPI transactions.
  • Users can convert reward points into statement credit, and air miles, or choose from multiple voucher options through IndusMoments.
  • This collaboration aims to combine the universal prevalence of UPI in India with the advantages of credit cards.

India’s SEA Signed MoU with Brazil’s ABIOVE for Supply of Soya Oil to India
The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), a cooking oil industry body, and ABIOVE, the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for close cooperation in soyabean oil supply to India.

  • The agreement aims to cooperate with the supply, use, and trade of soybean, soya meal, and soyabean oil as well as oilseeds, oilseed products, and edible oils market.
  • The MoU targets technology exchange for improved oilseed cultivation, emphasizing amplified agricultural productivity.
  • The focus lies in fostering scientific and technical alliances, particularly in oil meals and vegetable edible oils, mutually benefiting both organizations.

Signatories: The MoU was signed by Ajay Jhunjhunwala, President of SEA, and Andre Meloni Nassar, President of ABIOVE.
Note:

  • Specifically, India imports 3.5 to 4.0 million tonnes of soybean oil mainly from Latin America. Brazil is one of the major suppliers of soyabean oil to India.

Heeralal Samariya sworn in as Chief IC of CIC by President Draupadi MurmuHeeralal Samariya sworn in as CIC chief by President Draupadi MurmuOn 6th November 2023, Heeralal Samariya sworn in as the Chief Information Commissioner (Chief IC) of the Central Information Commission (CIC). He becomes the first Dalit Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer to hold the post.

  • Draupadi Murmu, President of India, administered the oath of office at the function at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, Delhi.
  • He succeeds Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha, whose tenure as chief of CIC ended on 3rd October 2023.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi and Minister of State (Independent Charge), Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Other Appointments:
Heeralal Samariya administered the oath of office to Information Commissioners(IC) of CIC Anandi Ramalingam and Vinod Kumar Tiwari, Indian Forest Service (IFS) Officer, at a swearing-in ceremony organized in CIC in New Delhi, Delhi.

Tenure of Chief IC and ICs:
The Chief Information Commissioner and an Information Commissioner shall hold office for such term as prescribed (3 years) by the Central Government or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier, and shall not be eligible for reappointment.

i.Heeralal Samariya was an 1985 batch IAS officer of  Telangana Cadre. He has been serving as the Information Commissioner in CIC since 2020.
ii.Previously, he served as the Secretary in the Ministry of Labor and Employment(MoLE) and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Chemical & Fertilizers.
iii.He has also served as the Commissioner Commercial Taxes in Telangana.
About Central Information Commission (CIC):
i.The CIC was established by the Central Government in 2005, under the provisions of the Right to Information(RTI) Act, 2005.
ii.CIC led by Chief IC can have a maximum of 10 ICs.

  • At present, there are only 2 ICs.

Power and Functions of CIC:
i.CIC will receive and inquire into a complaint from any person regarding information requested under RTI.
ii.It can order an inquiry into any matter if there are reasonable grounds (suo-moto power).
iii.While inquiring, the Commission has the powers of a civil court in respect of summoning, requiring documents etc.

Goverdhan S. Rawat & Ajay K. Sood Appointed as Dy MDs of NABARDRawat and Sood named deputy MDs of NABARDThe Government of India has appointed Goverdhan S. Rawat and Dr. Ajay Kumar Sood as Deputy Managing Directors(Dy MDs) of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), an apex development bank administered by the Ministry of Finance.
Details of the appointment: 
i.Goverdhan S. Rawat has been appointed for a tenure of 5 years with effect from the taking over charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
ii.Ajay Kumar Sood will hold the post till his superannuation on 31st August 2027. 
iii.Prior to the appointment, Goverdhan S. Rawat served as the Chief General Manager of NABARD, Maharashtra Regional Office(RO) in Pune and Dr. Ajay Kumar Sood served as the  Chief General Manager of NABARD, Himachal Pradesh Regional Office in Shimla.
Note: The appointment follows the approval of the proposal by Department of Financial Services, under the Ministry of Finance.
About Goverdhan S. Rawat:
i.He joined NABARD as an officer in 1992.
ii.His areas of work was spread across Project Appraisal, Infrastructure Financing, District Credit Planning, Rural Development, Consulting Services, Board Secretaries and Human Resource (HR).
iii.He has served as Nominee Director on the Boards of Pithoragarh Kshetriya Gramin Bank, Agricultural Finance Corporation(AFC) India Limited and NABSAMRUDDHI Finance Limited.

  • NABSAMRUDDHI Finance Limited is the subsidiary of NABARD.

About Ajay K. Sood:
i.He Joined NABARD in 1996 as Assistant General Manager.

  • Before that, he served as Scientist with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

The Government of India has appointed Sanjay Kallapur and R. Narayanaswamy as part-time members of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), India’s independent accounting regulator for 3 years.

  • Sanjay Kallapur was on the Board of Directors of IDBI Bank.
  • From 2018 to 2021, he served as an International Council Member-at-large for the American Accounting Association.
  • He is a member of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Corporate Reporting Consortium.
  • R. Narayanaswamy has worked for the Steel Authority of India from 1980 to 1984.
  • From 2005 to 2011, he presided over the audit committee of Indian Railway Finance Corporation as an independent director and Chairman.
  • From 2014 to 2017, he served as an independent director and Chairman of Bank of Baroda.

Note: With these 2 appointments, NFRA now has 9 Part-Time Members.

Cricket: Punjab Defeats Baroda to Win Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023The Punjab cricket team won its maiden domestic Twenty20 (T20) IDFC First Bank Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy(SMAT) 2023-2024 title by defeating the Baroda team in the final held in Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium in Mohali, Punjab.
Highlights:
i.The victory for the Punjab team was the first domestic title since their Ranji Trophy victory in the 1992-93 season.

  • The Punjab team will get a cash reward of Rs 80 lakhs each from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the PCA (Punjab Cricket Association).

ii.Ashutosh Sharma playing for Railways team scored 11-ball fifty against Arunachal Pradesh team in the group stage match. It has broken the record of Yuvraj Singh’s 12-ball fifty, which he scored against England in the inaugural World T20 in 2007 in (South Africa).
iii.This edition made the record of hitting the most number of sixes (1503) in the history of SMAT.
Awards:
Anmolpreet Singh(Punjab) was awarded the player of the match in the finals for his century(113 runs) which was also the first-ever century in the SMAT finals.
Abhishek Sharma(Punjab) has received the Player of the series award for scoring 485 runs and taking 2 wickets.
About Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy:
i.The 16th edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was played from 16 October to 6 November 2023 in Ranchi(Jharkhand), Jaipur(Rajasthan), Mumbai(Maharashtra), Dehradun(Uttarakhand), and chandigarh, Mohali(Punjab).

  • The 2023 edition witnessed the participation of 38 teams grouped into five groups.

ii.History:The domestic T20 tournament was named after the former Indian test cricketer Syed Mushtaq Ali(1914- 2005)and it was organized by the BCCI.

  • The first edition was held in the year 2006-07 and was won by the Tamil Nadu cricket team against Punjab in the finals.
  • The previous edition (15th) was won by Mumbai against Himachal Pradesh in the finals.

Note –

  • Delhi’s Hrithik Shokeen became the first tactical substitute – known as “Impact Player” – in the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
  • IDFC First Bank secured the title sponsorship rights for all BCCI matches, domestic and international, for the next three years. The bank will pay Rs 4.2 crore per match for the sponsorship.

International Day of Radiology 2023 – November 8International Day of Radiology (IDoR) - November 08 2023 International Day of Radiology (IDoR) or World Radiography Day is annually observed across the globe on 8 November to raise awareness about the contribution of radiology towards safe patient care, and to improve public understanding of the vital role radiologists and radiographers play in the healthcare continuum.

  • IDoR was created to mark the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a German physicist & the winner of the 1st Nobel Prize in Physics (1901), in 1895.

8 November 2023 marks the observance of the 12th International Day of Radiology(IDoR).
Background:
i.The IDoR was established in 2011 as a follow-up to the European Day of Radiology (EDoR).
ii.On November 28, 2011, during the annual RSNA meeting in Chicago, the United States of America (USA) November 8 was officially confirmed as the IDoR by ESR, ACR, and RSNA.
iii.The IDoR was 1st observed in 2012, as a joint initiative of ESR, the RSNA, and the ACR.
