India concludes historic Asian Games campaign with 107 medalsIndia finished Fourth in the medal tally of the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 with 107 medals (28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze).

  • The 19th edition of the Asian Games marks India’s record for the highest medal tally so far, surpassing the previous record medal tally of 70 medals (16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze) at the Jakarta Asian Games 2018.

India’s Highest medal haul in disciplines:

i.India won the highest number of medals in the Shooting event with 22 medals (7 Gold, 9 Silver, and 6 Bronze).

  • It was followed by Athletics 29 medals (6 Gold,14 Silver, and 9 Bronze) and Archery 9 medals (5 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze).

Indians Get Paris 2024 Olympic Quotas:

Through the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, 74 Indian players have secured their place to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Deotale became the first Indian archer to win three gold medals in the Asian Games 

i.Nagpur’s (Maharashtra) Ojas Pravin Deotale won three gold medals in Archery including men’s individual, men’s compound team event along with Abhishek Verma and Prathamesh Jawkar, mixed team event along with Jyothi Surekha Vennam

  • He was the first Indian archer to win three gold medals in the Asian Games so far.
  • Deotale’s gold medal in the compound mixed team event along with Jyothi was India’s first gold medal in the compound mixed team event so far in the Asian Games.

ii.Jyothi Surekha Vennam from Vijayawada also won three medals including gold in Women’s Compound Individual, Women’s Compound Archery Team along with Aditi Swami & Parneet Kaur, and Mixed team compound archery team.

Note: Compound archers Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale won the most gold medals (three each) for India in the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022.

Parul Chaudhary Wins  gold & silver:

Parul Chaudhary won two medals including gold medal in the women’s 5000m race and the silver medal in the 3000m women’s steeplechase.

  • Parul Chaudhary holds the national record for the 5000m with a time of 15:10.35.

Sunil Kumar – Bronze medal Winner in Greco-Roman wrestling:

i.Sunil Kumar won the bronze medal in Greco-Roman(87kg division) wrestling.

  • This was India’s first medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the Asian Games since the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010 when Ravinder Singh and Sunil Kumar Rana won bronze medals in the same event.
  • Sunil Kumar has also won the gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2020 Asian Championships in China.

Avinash Sable- Gold Medal in 3000m Men’s steeplechase & silver medal in the men’s 5000m race:

i.Avinash Sable was the first Indian to win the gold medal in the 3000m men’s steeplechase event in any Asian Games.

  • Avinash finished the race in 8:19.50 minutes, breaking the previous Asian Games record of 8:22.79 minutes by Iran’s Hossein Keyhani in 2018.

ii.Avinash also won the silver medal in the men’s 5000m race.

  • Sable’s medal was India’s first in the men’s 5000m since Raj Kumar’s bronze medal in 1982.
  • Bahrain’s Birhanu Yemataw won the gold and Bahrain’s Dawit Fikadu won bronze in the men’s 5000m race.
  • India’s Gulveer Singh secured fourth place in the event.

Arjun and Sunil won bronze in the men’s double 1000m canoe event:

i.Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam won the bronze in the men’s double 1000m canoe event.

  • This was India’s first Asian Games medal in the canoe event since 1994 and also the second medal in the canoe event in the Asian Games so far after Indian duo Siji Sadanandan and Johnny Rommel won the bronze in the 1994 Hiroshima edition.

Note: The canoe is a light narrow boat with both ends sharp that is usually propelled by paddling.

Indian Men’s 4x400m relay team wins gold:

i.Indian Men’s 4x400m relay team including Anas Muhammed Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh won the gold medal.

ii.Indian women’s 4x400m relay team including Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi and Subha Venkatesan won the silver medal.

iii.Indian mixed team 4x400m relay team including Vithya Ramraj, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, Rajesh Ramesh and Subha Venkatesan won the silver medal.

Harmilan Bains Wins silver in the women’s 800m race and women’s 1500m race:

i.India’s Harmilan Bains won silver in the women’s 800m and 1500m event.

  • Harmilan Bains’s mother Madhuri Singh had also won the silver medal in the women’s 800m event at the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

Tejaswin Shankar Wins silver in men’s decathlon:  

i.Tejaswin Shankar won the silver medal in the men’s decathlon.

  • He set a national record in the men’s decathlon by finishing with 7666 points, surpassing Bhartinder Singh’s 7658 points in 2011.
  • Tejaswin Shankar is also a national record holder in the high jump with a 2.29m jump in 2018.

Note:

The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events including 100m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500m.

Javelin throw: Neeraj Chopra and Annu Rani win gold Medal 

i.Neeraj Chopra won his second consecutive gold medal in the men’s Javelin throw in the Asian games with a best throw of 88.88 metres.

  • India’s Kishore Kumar Jena won the silver medal with the best throw of 87.54 metres in the men’s Javelin throw.

ii.India’s Annu Rani won the gold medal in the women’s Javelin throw with the best throw of 62.92m.

  • This has been Annu Rani’s second medal in the Asian games since she won the bronze medal in Incheon(South Korea) in 2014.

Sepaktakraw – Indian Women’s team Wins Bronze medal:

Indian Women’s team including Ayekpam Maipak Devi, Oinam Chaoba Devi, Khushbu, Elangbam Priya Devi, Khushbu and Elangbam Leirentombi Devi won the Bronze medal in the sepaktakraw.

  • This was the second medal in sepaktakraw(regu team event)in the Asian games since the Indian men’s regu team won bronze in 2018.
  • The ball is made of rattan or synthetic plastic weighing from 150 to 160 grams (g).

Note: Sepaktakraw or kick volleyball is like Volleyball but played with feet, knees, Head, and chest.  And the match is played by two regus (teams) each made up of three players.

Tennis:

i.Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee won bronze medal in women’s doubles.

  • This was India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in women’s doubles.

ii.Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni won the silver medal in the men’s doubles event.

iii.Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event.

Roller skating:

i.Indian women’s team including Sanjana Bathula, Karthika Jagadeeswaran, Heeral Sadhu, and Aarathy Kasturi Raj won the bronze medal in the women’s Speed Skating 3000m Relay event.

  • This was India’s first-ever medal in the Asian Games speed skating category.
  • Sanjana Bathula became the youngest Indian to win a medal at the Asian Games at the age of 15 years, three months, and 11 days old.

ii.Indian men’s team including Anand Kumar Velkumar, Siddhant Kamble, and Vikram Ingale won the bronze medal in the men’s Speed Skating 3000m Relay.

Hockey: 

i.The Indian men’s hockey team won the gold medal by defeating Japan in the final.

  • This was India’s fourth Asian Games gold medal including Bangkok (1966), Bangkok(1998), Incheon(2014), and Huangzhou(2022).
  • With this win Indian men’s hockey qualified directly to Paris Olympics 2024.

ii.Indian women’s hockey team won the bronze medal by defeating Japan in the match for third place.

  • This was India’s fourth bronze medal in women’s hockey at the Asian Games after Seoul (1986), Doha (2006), and Incheon (2014).
  • The Indian women’s hockey team won the silver medal at the last edition at Jakarta 2018.

Badminton:

i.Indian duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the gold medal in the men’s doubles of badminton by defeating South Korea’s Choi Solgyu & Kim Wonho in the finals.

  • This was India’s maiden gold medal in badminton at the Asian Games.
  • This was also Chirag-satwik’s fifth title of 2023, after their wins at the Swiss Open, Asia Championships, Indonesia Open, and Korea Open.

ii.Indian men’s team won the silver medal in the men’s team badminton event.

  • Men’s team including HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen, Mithun Manjunath, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Dhruv Kapila, MR Arjun, Rohan Kapoor and Sai Pratheek K.
  • This was India’s first medal in a badminton team event at the Asian Games since securing a bronze in 1986.

iii.India’s H.S. Prannoy won the bronze medal in the badminton men’s singles event.

Cricket:

i.The Indian men’s cricket team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad was awarded a gold medal after the final was called off due to rain.

  • This was the Indian men’s cricket team’s maiden title in the Asian games.
  • Afghanistan won the silver while Bangladesh bagged bronze in the men’s cricket.

Kabaddi:

i.The Indian men’s kabaddi team won the gold medal by defeating Iran in the finals.

  • This was India’s eighth men’s kabaddi title at the Asian Games.

ii.The Indian women’s kabaddi team also won the gold medal by defeating Chinese Taipei in the final.

  • The Indian women’s kabaddi team’s medal was the 100th medal for India in Hangzhou Asian Games 2022.
  • This was the Indian women’s kabaddi team’s third gold medal in the Asian games.

Other Indian record holders:

i.Vithya Ramraj won the bronze medal in women’s 400m hurdles.

  • She equalled P.T. Usha’s 400m hurdle national record with a timing of 55.42 seconds in Heat, which was set in 1984.

ii.Jaggy Shivdasani, 65 years, seven months, and twenty days old, became the oldest Indian to win an Asian Games medal.

  • Jaggy Shivdasani was part of the men’s bridge team including Sandeep Thakral, Rajeshwar Tiwari, Sumit Mukherjee, Raju Tolani, and Ajay Prabhakar Khare won the silver medal.
  • Bridge is a team card game played by two teams of two players, with partners sitting opposite one another.

Next Edition:

The 20th edition of Asian Games will be held in Japan in 2027.

New Medal Events:

Breaking or breakdancing made entry into this edition Asian Games, where Katsuyuki Banai (Japan) won the gold medal in the men’s category while Liu Qingyi(China) won the gold medal in the women’s category.

15 world records were broken during the Asian Games:

Two world records were made by Indians,

i.Sift Kaur Samra won gold in the women’s 50m rifle 3-position individual event by breaking the World Record with a score of 469.6 ahead of China’s Zhang Qiongyue.

ii.Shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale, and Akhil Sheoran clinched gold in men’s rifle 3P team event.

  • The Indian trio broke the World Record after achieving a cumulative 1769 points.
