National Family Health Survey 2019-21 (NFHS-5) & Rural Health Statistics Publication for Year 2020-21 (RHS 2020-21) Released
The National Report of the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)– National Family Health Survey 2019–21 (NFHS-5), was released by Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India (GoI) at the ‘Swasthya Chintan Shivir’ held in Ekta Nagar(previously known as Kevadia), Gujarat.
National Family Health Survey (NFHS):
The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) is a multi-round, large-scale survey that is conducted in a representative sample of households across India.
NFHS So Far: NFHS-1 Was Held In 1992–93 And Included All States Except Sikkim; NFHS-2 was held in 1998–99 and included all states; NFHS-3 was held in 2005–06; and NFHS-4 was held in 2015-16.
National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) 2019-21
i.In India, 17 field agencies conducted NFHS-5 fieldwork in two phases, collecting data from 636,699 households in 707 districts (as of March 2017) across 28 states and 8 Union Territories (UTs), encompassing 7,24,115 women and 1,01,839 men to provide disaggregated estimates up to district level.
Rural Health Statistics publication for the year 2020-21 (RHS 2020-21)
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has also launched the Rural Health Statistics publication for the year 2020–21 (RHS 2020–21), as on 31 March 2021, on the occasion of Chintan Shivir.

Pashupati Kumar Paras Union Minister MOFPI launched 3 One District One Product Brands and 5 Products On 5th May 2022, Pashupati Kumar Paras, Union Minister, Ministry of Food Processing Industries(MOFPI) launched the 3 One District One Product (ODOP) brands under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme in New Delhi, Delhi.
- The New 3 ODOP Brands are, Madhurmithas; Anaras; and Pind Se and the 5 products are Jaggery Powder, dried spicy pineapple, Mango Pickle, Masala Paste and Lemon Honey.
- The ODOP brands are developed under the ODOP concept under the PMFME scheme.
i.Following the launch of the 3 new brands and 5 products, a total of 10 ODOP brands and 14 products have been launched under the MoU between MOFPI and NAFED under the PMFME scheme.
ii.All the ODOP products are available on E-commerce platforms, and prominent retail stores across India.

India’s Solar Installations Crossed A Record 10 Gw Capacity In 2021
India installed a record 10 GW of new solar capacity in 2021, a big jump of 210% year-over-year (YoY) compared to 3.2 GW installed in 2020, according to Mercom India Research’s recently released Q4 & Annual India Solar Market Update report.
- The report was released by Mercom Communication India, a subsidiary of US based Mercom Capital Group.
MERCOM’s Findings
i.Highest ever capacity of solar installations in a year in India.
ii.The cumulative installed solar capacity stood at 49.3 GW. The country also has a development pipeline of over 53 GW.
iii. In 2021, Rajasthan added the highest utility-scale solar capacity with 4.5 GW, followed by Gujarat with 1.2 GW and Uttar Pradesh with 885 MW. The top three states in 2021 contributed to around 79% of the installations in 2021.
iv.India’s installed renewable energy capacity, including large hydro projects, stood at 150.9 GW, accounting for a 38.4% share in the overall power mix at the end of December 2021.
v.Newly installed solar capacity in 2021 reached a record high, making up 62% of the total power capacity additions in 2021.
vi.ReNew Power was the top utility-scale solar developer followed by Adani Green whereas Tata Power Solar was the top rooftop solar installer, accounting for 20% of all the installations.

SVAMITVA Scheme marks 2nd year Anniversary
Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas – SVAMITVA scheme marked its 2nd year anniversary on 24th April 2022. The scheme was launched by the Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on 24th April 2020 on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day 2020.
- PM Modi hailed the SVAMITVA scheme as a mantra for development & improving trust in the villages with the help of modern technology.
Note:
Annually India celebrates April 24 as the National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) to celebrate the constitutional status accorded to the Panchayati Raj system in the country. The day is organized by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR).
Key Points:
i.The SVAMITVA scheme is being implemented in a phased manner across India and it has covered around 6 lakh 62 thousand villages of India.
ii.Under this scheme, more than 36 lakh 68 thousand property cards have been distributed and have completed the drone survey in over one lakh 31 thousand villages.
About Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) Scheme:
i.SVAMITVA, is a Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MPR) launched nation-wide on National Panchayati Raj Day, 24th April 2021 after successful completion of pilot phase of scheme (2020-2021), which was implemented during 2020–2021 in the States of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and select villages of Punjab and Rajasthan.
ii.The Scheme is a reformative step towards digitalising land ownership at the grassroots, transforming rural India by mapping land parcels using drone technology and providing ‘Record of Rights’ to village household owners with issuance of legal ownership cards.
iii.There are about 6.62 lakh villages in the country which will be eventually covered under this scheme. The entire work is likely to be spread over a period of five years.
Objectives:
i.To bring financial stability to the citizens in rural India by enabling them to use their property as a financial asset for taking loans and other financial benefits.
ii.Creation of accurate land records for rural planning.
iii.Determination of property tax.
iv.Creation of survey infrastructure and Geographic Information System (GIS) maps that can be leveraged by any department for their use.

Highlights of PM Narendra Modi visit to Germany, Denmark and France
On May 02-04, 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi visited three European Nations viz. Germany, Denmark and France which marked his first visit abroad in 2022.
i.In the first leg of his visit, he visited Germany, and held bilateral talks with Olaf Scholz, Federal Chancellor of Germany in Berlin to enhance and intensify cooperation in a broad range of areas. They also exchanged views on regional and global matters of mutual interest.
ii.After the Germany visit, PM Narendra Modi visited Copenhagen, Denmark at the invitation of its PM Ms. Mette Frederiksen. There he participated in the 2nd India-Nordic Summit which was hosted by Denmark. He also addressed the Indian community and interacted with Denmark’s Royal Family i.e. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II.
iii.PM Narendra Modi paid a brief visit in Paris to meet Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of France as both nations are celebrating 75 years of their diplomatic relations in 2022.

AWL Becomes India’s Largest FMCG company Surpassing HULAdani Wilmar Limited (AWL) became the largest Fast Moving Consumer Goods Company (FMCG) in India beating Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), after the announcement of its Quarter Four results for the Financial year 2022 (Q4FY2022).
- AWL has reported the total operational revenue of Rs 54,214 crore in the Financial Year 2022 whereas HUL reported the revenue of Rs 51,468 crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2021-22.
Key Points:
i.In Q4FY22 (January-March 2022), the AWL has seen a 40 percent jump in revenue from operations to Rs 14,960 despite a 26 percent i.e. Rs 234.29 crore hit in net profit in the same period.
ii.The edible oil business of AWL contributed 84 percent of its total revenue in FY2022, which stood at Rs 45,401 crore, approximately 47 percent year-on-year increase from Rs 30,818 crore in FY2021.
iii.AWL’s Industry essentials business primarily represented by AWL’s oils derivatives business that caters to production of beauty, personal and skin care items, grew 42 percent to Rs 6,191.5 crore in FY 2021–22, up from Rs 4,366 crore in FY 2020–21.

i.Since May 2, 2022, the share price of AWL has fallen 8 percent from Rs 783 per share to Rs 724 per share. Also, its market capitalization has also come below Rs 1 Lakh Crore that it had achieved last week.
ii.Adani Wilmar Ltd (AWL) on May 3, 2022 announced the acquisition of several brands, including the renowned ‘Kohinoor’ brand from McCormick Switzerland GMBH, ZÜRICH, Switzerland to strengthen its leadership in the food business.

Tata Power Solar Systems Secures India’s Largest Solar EPC Order from SJVN Ltd.
Tata Power Solar Systems Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power, has won India’s largest single solar EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) order of 1 GW (gigawatt) for around Rs. 5500 crores from the public sector undertaking SJVN Limited.
The EPC order has been structured so that the company can use Indian-made cells and modules.
About the Solar EPC Project:
i.The project will be developed under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and will be completed within a period of 24 months.
ii.The project, which is spread out over 5,000 acres in Bikaner (Rajasthan), intends to eliminate 22,87,128 kg of carbon emissions and generate roughly 2,500 million units per year.
iii. With this 1GW order, the company’s order book has surpassed Rs. 12,000 crores, with a total portfolio of more than 9.3GW for utility-scale renewables projects.

On May 5, 2022, The Des Moines-based World Food Prize Foundation has conferred the World Food Prize 2022 to National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Cynthia Rosenzweig, an American agronomist and climatologist, in recognition of her modelling of the climate crisis’ impact on food production
- The 2022 World Food Prize Laureate was announced by Barbara Stinson, President of the World Food Prize Foundation during a ceremony hosted by the United States(US) Department of State.

i.Her modelling work has provided a foundation for decision-makers around the world to create strategies to mitigate climate change and adapt our food systems to a changing planet, which has helped communities worldwide address the consequences of Earth’s changing climate.

Peperomia Albertiae: New plant species discovered in Idukki, Kerala
Researchers at the Postgraduate and research department of Botany at St Albert’s college in Kochi, Kerala has discovered a new plant species, Peperomia Albertiae, in Idukki district of Kerala.
- The plant was identified by Arjun Thomas at Chokramudi Kudi at Bison Valley in Idukki under the guidance of Associate Professor J Jameson during a botanical expedition focusing on vascular epiphytes of tropical forests of the South Western Ghats.
- The study report on the new species was published in the March edition of the Kew Bulletin Official Journal of the Royal Botanic Gardens, England.
- Arjun Thomas and J Jameson were the authors of the study report.
About Peperomia Albertiae:
i.The new species was named ‘Peperomia Albertiae’ to reconcile the work carried out by the researchers of St Albert’s College which completed 75 years in the field of higher education.
ii.The new species belongs to the genus of Peperomia and it is an epiphytic plants belonging to Peperaceae family which comprises both pepper and betel plants.

Indian archers – Padma Shri Tarundeep Rai and Ridhi has won the gold medal under the Recurve Mixed Team category at the Antalya 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup stage 1 held from 18th to 24th April 2022 at Antalya, Turkey.
Tarundeep Rai was a part of the gold medal winning team at the 2010 Shanghai Archery World Cup.
- The Indian trio – Abhishek Verma, Rajat Chauhan and Aman Saini has also won the Gold medal in compound men’s team competition.
- This was the first team gold for both Rajat Chauhan and Aman Saini.

iii.He was appointed the CMD of Indian Airlines after his retirement and later he has also served as the Chairman of Air India.

International No Diet Day 2022 – May 6
International No Diet Day(INDD) is annually observed across the globe on 6th May to celebrate body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity. The day also promotes healthy lifestyle with a focus on health at any size.
The day aims to raise awareness about the potential dangers of dieting and unlikelihood of success
Symbol: a light blue ribbon is the symbol of the INDD.
Background:
i.International No Diet Day was created by Mary Evans Young, Director of the British anti-diet movement “Diet Breakers”, in 1992.
ii.The first INDD was observed in the United Kingdom(UK) in 1992.
iii.The INDD was originally intended to be a UK based event which later became a global annual event.
Objective of INDD:
- Raise awareness about weight discrimination
- Honour the victims of eating disorders and weight-loss surgery
- Highlight the facts about dieting and its false predictions
- Help end weight discrimination, sizeism and Fat phobia.
Dieting:
The word “diet” originates from the Greek word “diaita”, which means “manner of living”.
Potential Dangers of dieting:
i.Dieting can lead to unhealthy changes in body composition, hormonal changes, reduced bone density, menstrual disturbances, and lower resting energy expenditure
ii.Reducing or eliminating carbohydrate intake can result in damage to the digestive system, causing constipation, diarrhea and others.

Maharashtra’s Jivhala Scheme: 1st of its kind Loan Scheme for Prisoners in India launched
The Maharashtra Department of Prisons initiated India’s 1st-of-its-kind loan scheme namely ‘Jivhala’ for inmates serving sentences in jails across the state for more than 3 years. It is offered by Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank.
- Its pilot was launched by Maharashtra’s Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil on the occasion of Maharashtra Day- May 01, 2022 at Yerawada Central Prison in Pune (Maharashtra), and will gradually be extended to nearly 60 prisons across the state.
- Jivhala means affection in Marathi.
Reason behind the Launch of this Scheme:
The majority of the inmates are sole breadwinners, and their incarceration has left their families without a source of income. Therefore, this loan will be disbursed in the name of the inmate, and will be issued to designated family members for education, medical treatment, legal fees, or any other expenses.
i.In the initial phase, a loan of Rs 50,000 will be given at a 7% interest rate. Of the interest the bank earns, 1% will be given back to the system as a contribution to the Prisoners’ Welfare Fund.
ii.The loan will be provided without any mortgage or guarantor.
iii.The loan amount will be deducted as Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) from the prison accounts of inmates.
- It should be noted that, in the prison, an inmate is categorized as skilled, semi-skilled or un-skilled and assigned work in industrial and manufacturing units inside the prison, and are paid daily wages.

Haryana Launches ‘e-Adhigam’ Scheme To Distribute Three Lakhs Tablets To StudentsThe Haryana State Government launches ‘e-Adhigam’ scheme under which nearly 3 lakh students will be receiving tablet computers to aid their online education. Under the scheme, Class 10 and Class 12 students of Haryana Board will be eligible to receive free tablets with 2GB internet data.
- Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched Advance Digital Haryana Initiative of Government with Adaptive Modules (Adigham) scheme at Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak, Haryana.
E-Adhigam Scheme
i.To push for digital technology penetration to education, the state government of Haryana has launched a new scheme to distribute free tablets to students in the state.
ii.Targeted beneficiaries for the scheme are the students studying in the Class 10, 11 and 12 of the State.
iii. A tentative estimate shared by the state education department states that a total of 3 lakh students are expected to receive free tablets under this new scheme.
Note – India set to implement New Education policy by 2030, but the state target is 2025.

Kerala Govt to Launch ‘Shaili App’ For Diagnosing, Controlling Lifestyle Diseases
The government of Kerala is set to launch an Android App ‘Shaili’, aimed at diagnosing and controlling lifestyle diseases among the people in the state of Kerala.
- The app has been set up as part of the population-based screening project launched by the Kerala State Health Department under the ‘Nava Kerala Karma plan’.
- Under the health-screening project, the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers have been tasked with collecting information from persons over the age of 30 in their respective areas about any lifestyle diseases or risk factors they may have.
Key Points:
i.In the view of rising lifestyle based diseases the app would help to provide an accurate picture of such ailments both locally and at the State-level enabling the government to control such diseases and formulate appropriate health plans.
ii.The app would primarily collect information about diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung diseases as well as other lifestyle-related ailments and cancers. Along with the causes for these lifestyle diseases will also be collected.
iii.Based on the information collected, the health status of the individuals would be scored and those with a score of above four would be asked to visit the nearest health centre for a check-up for lifestyle diseases.
