United Nations(UN)’s Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week is annually observed across the globe from 24th October to 31st October to review and celebrate the progress made towards “Media and Information Literacy for All”.
- The year 2021 marks the 10th Global MIL Week and this also marks the first UN-recognised Global MIL Week
- Global MIL Week 2021 is hosted by South Africa and co-organised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The theme of 2021 Global MIL Week is “Media and Information Literacy for the Public Good”.
UN Recognition:
The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/75/267 on 25th March 2021 and proclaimed 24 to 31 October of each year as “Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week”.
Background:
i.The idea of Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week was initiated in 2011 in Fez, Morocco.
ii.The observance of the Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week began in 2012.
- The annual Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week is led by UNESCO in cooperation with the UNESCO MIL Alliance, the UNESCO-UNAOC MIL and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) University Network, and other partners.
Events:
The 2021 Global MIL Week features the 11th MIL and Intercultural Dialogue Conference and the 6th Youth Agenda Forum.
Media and Information Literacy:
i.According to the UN, the quality of information determines the perceptions, beliefs and attitudes. The source of this information can be other persons, the media, libraries, archives, museums, publishers, or other information providers including the information on the Internet.
ii.UNESCO supports the development of MIL competencies among people through capacity-building resources, like curricula development, policy guidelines and articulation, and assessment framework.
