The National Energy Conservation day is annually celebrated across India on 14th December to create awareness among the general public about the importance of energy conservation for the present and the future.
Every year the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), an agency of the Government of India, under the Ministry of Power organises the National Energy Conservation day with an aim to showcase the achievements of India in energy efficiency and conservation.
Background:
i.To create awareness about the importance of the conservation and efficient use of energy, the Government of India implemented the Energy Conservation Act in India in 2001.
iii.BEE, under the ministry of power formulated the policies regarding the use of Energy.
Objective of BEE:
- To reduce the energy intensity of the Indian economy.
- To promote and advocate energy conservation and energy efficiency.
National Energy Conservation Awards:
i.The National Energy Conservation Awards were instituted for the first time on 14th December 1991, the National Energy Conservation Day.
ii.The award is annually presented to the various sectors (Industries, Transport, Buildings, Institutions, Appliances) of the economy to recognise the outstanding efforts on Energy conservation in India.
iii.The award was instituted with an aim to motivate industries and other institutes to adopt measures to use energy efficiently.
Note:
The 30th National Energy Conservation Awards function which was scheduled to take place on 14th December 2020 has been postponed due to covid-19 pandemic.
