NTPC Limited (formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), Bhopal for the implementation of Narmada Landscape Restoration Project (NLRP). NTPC Ltd & United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide the funds in equal proportions for the implementation of the project.
The project will be implemented in Khargone District of Madhya Pradesh along the catchments of tributaries of River Narmada between the Omkareshwar & Maheshwar dams.The tenure of the project will be 4 years.
Objective -To impact the water quality & quantity in the tributaries of River Narmada.
Implementation Partners:
i.IIFM, Bhopal will jointly implement the project along with Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
ii.IIFM is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), whereas GGGI is an intergovernmental organisation providing sustainable and inclusive economic growth in developing countries.
Key Points:
i.The improvement in water quality of River Narmada will be of great benefit to the city of Indore as it draws around 60% of its municipal water supply from the River.
ii.The project seeks to build an incentivisation mechanism to support the forest and farm communities of Narmada basin and also to maintain sustainable landscape practices.
iii.The project is also expected to open new ways to manage watersheds to maintain water quality and supplement the Smart Cities Mission by introducing smarter ways of purification of urban water supplies.
