On November 17, 2020, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired its Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha for the Second Time. It demonstrated the warhead’s performance on proximity detection.
i.The weapon system consisted of all indigenously developed subsystems, and all the objectives of the test were fully met.
ii.The first test conducted on November 13, 2020 showcased the Radar and Missile’s capabilities.
Objective of QRSAM:
QRSAM has been designed to protect moving armoured vehicles from aerial attacks.
Key Points:
i.The flight test was conducted in deployment configuration of a weapon system consisting of Launcher, fully Automated Command and Control System, Surveillance System and Multi-Function Radars.
ii.The missile has a range of 25 -30Kms.
iii.It is an indigenous Missile System developed by DRDO in association with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
iv.The missile accurately hit the high performance Jet Unmanned Aerial Target drone “Banshee” – which simulates an aircraft.
Meggitt BTT-3 Banshee:
i.“Banshee” is a British target drone developed for air defence systems training.
ii.It has three variants Banshee 300 (Sea skimmer), Banshee 400 (Reconnaissance) and Jet Banshee (Faster Drone).
iii.It has been deployed in over 40 countries for Air Defence training.
