On 27th August, 2020 NITI Aayog launched the India Component of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)-Transport Initiative for Asia (TIA). The NDC-TIA India team will focus on establishing a multi-stakeholder dialogue for decarbonizing transport and providing technical support on GreenHouse Gas emission reduction measures in India. India’s Think-Tank NITI Aayog will be the implementing agency in India.
NDC-TIA is part of International Transport Forum (ITF)’s work on Decarbonising Transport in India that also includes Decarbonising Transport in Emerging Economies – India component.
Supporting Agencies:
It is supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
Key Points:
i.The NDC-TIA team will have a duration of 4 years.
ii.The team will work closely with Government agencies, local decision-makers, researchers, industry experts, think tanks and civil society organisations.
iii.The main objective of the programme intends to support the development of policies and regulations to promote electric vehicle charging infrastructure uptake and smooth wide scale adoption of EVs in India.
iv.They will provide policy recommendations on electric vehicle (EV) demand and supply policies, evaluating business models through cost-benefit analysis.
v.The programme aims to directly support the country’s NDC targets through the transport sector.Â
vi.With increasing urbanisation, the fleet size i.e. the number of sales of vehicles is increasing rapidly. It is projected that the total number of vehicles will be doubled by 2030.
About NDC Transport Initiative for Asia:
i.The NDC-TIA aims to provide a consistent strategy of effective policies for decarbonising transport.
ii.The project engages in China, India and Vietnam over the period 2020-24.
iii.The Goal of NDC-TIA is to make contributions to achieve NDC and increase ambition in transport sections of long-term strategies and 2025 NDCs.
