global energy consumptionOn June 17, 2020, According to the 69th  edition of “Statistical Review of World Energy 2020”, which collects and analyses energy data for 2019 , released by UK (United Kingdom) based oil and gas company BP plc, India was the 2nd  major market after China to increase primary energy consumption in the year 2019.

  • Primary energy consumption comes under total energy consumption, which also includes oil, natural gas, coal, electricity, carbon emissions, renewables, hydro and nuclear energy.

India’s position at total energy consumption: On the other hand, India’s energy consumption in 2019 was the third largest (34.06 EJ-an increase of 2.3%) only after China (141.70 EJ) and United States (94.65 EJ). Despite, the rate of growth in energy consumption in the year 2019 has been slower than in 2018.

Key findings from the bp Stats Review 2020 include:

Energy developments:
-The growth in consumption of primary energy globally has been down to 1.3 % in 2019 as compared to a 2.8 % increase in consumption in 2018.
-The renewable energy and natural gas occupy the leading position in the growth in energy consumption. While primary energy consumption in the world has increased to 583.90 Exajool (EJ).

Carbon emissions:
-Carbon emissions from energy use has been increased by 0.5%, only partially reversing some of the sudden big increase in 2018 (2.1%) &less than half 10-year average growth of 1.1% per year,

Oil consumption:
            – Global oil consumption during this period increased by 0.9 million barrels per day(bpd) or 0.9 %, which is slightly lower than the 10-year average of 1.3 % per annum .
            – India has been the 3rd largest country in terms of oil consumption with a growth of 1.59 lakh barrels per day. It ranked third after China’s consumption of 6.81 lakh barrels per day and Iran’s 1.83 lakh barrels per day.

Natural gas:
-Natural gas consumption sees a uptick of 78 billion cubic meters (bcm), or 2%, down the line of exceptional growth seen in 2018 (5.3%). But the share of gas in primary energy increased a record high of 24.2%.

Coal:
        – Global Coal consumption fell by 0.6% and its share in primary energy fell to its lowest level in 16 years (27%) led by a sharp drop in OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) demand. However, coal remained the largest source of energy for power generation with over 36% of global power.

Renewables, hydro and nuclear energy:
-Renewable energy (including biofuels) posted a record increase in consumption in energy terms (3.2 EJ). This was also the largest increment for any source of energy in 2019.
          – Hydroelectric consumption increase by a below average of 0.8%, with growth led by China (0.6 EJ), Turkey (0.3 EJ) and India (0.2 EJ).
-While, the Nuclear consumption witnessed a increase of 3.2% (0.8 EJ) with China (0.5 EJ) and Japan (0.1 EJ) provided the largest increments.

Electricity:
            – Electricity generation witnessed a increase of only 1.3% – around half its 10-year average. China accounted for more than 90% of net global growth.
