The United Nations (UN) organized the first official International Delegate’s Day on April 25, 2020 and this year it is a special observance because it also marks the 75th anniversary of the San-Francisco Conference, an event that laid the foundations of the United Nations (UN).
Key Points:
i.The day is celebrated in order to raise awareness of the role of representatives and delegates of the Member States to the United Nations.
ii.On April 2, 2019 the United Nation General Assembly passed its resolution A/RES/73/286 and proclaimed April 25 as International Delegate’s Day.
iii.History of the day: On April 25, 1945, delegates from fifty countries came together for the first time in San Francisco after the devastation of the second world war and their aim is to set up an organization that would restore world peace & impose rules on the post- war world order.
iv.850 delegates took part in the conference, as they represented 80% of the world population, two months later on June 26, 1945, the charter of the United Nations was signed by representatives of the 50 countries that attended the conference.
v.The agreement resulted in the creation of the United Nations, an organization that now comprises 193 Member States.
vi.Poland, which did not have a government at the time of the conference, signed the charter later, hence bringing the Founding Member States to 51.
vii.About Delegates: The delegates represent their countries in meetings at the United Nations (UN). The delegates are appointed by their countries and they follow the interests of the government they serve.
viii.Delegates bring the United Nations to life as they regularly represent their home countries in an array of UN meetings. Delegates negotiate agreements, form alliances, and struggle for compromises.
