The United Nations (UN’s) World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) annually will be observed on July 15 to provide proper training to the youth and create skills for decent work, employment and entrepreneurship.

World Youth Skills Day provided a unique opportunity for young people, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, firms, employers’ and workers’ organizations, policy makers and development partners to discuss importance of skill development among youth

For the WYSD 2021, the theme was ‘‘Reimagining youth skills post-pandemic’’
Background:
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/169/145 on 18th December 2014 and decided to observe July 15 as World Youth Skills Day annually. Sri Lanka was behind the initiation of the resolution which was supported by G77 (Group of 77) and China.
- The first WYSD was celebrated on 15 July 2015.
Significance:
- The celebrations of WYSD 2022 will highlight the ongoing focus on the Transforming Education Summit (September 2022), and contribute to the work being done under its Thematic Action Track “Learning and skills for life, work, and sustainable development”.
- The summit is a youth-inspired global event of major importance for the future of millions of young people; it is prepared by, with and for youth.
Major Events:
YOUth matters: Celebrating skills for the future- it is organized by Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore in collaboration with UNESCO-UNEVOC, UNEVOC Centres, local and regional partners.
Skills in Action Photo Competition 2022– it is a photography competition, which capture green and digital skills in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
Efforts of India to Boost Skill Development:
i.The Government of India has taken various measures to boost skill development in India. It includes imparting necessary skills through development programs, apprenticeship programs and more.
ii.Important schemes related to skill development-
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY):
It was launched in 2015 to promote skill development among the youth of the country.
Advanced Vocational Training Scheme (AVTS):
It provides training in some selected areas through short-term modular courses that have durations of one to six weeks.
Skill Strength for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE):
The STRIVE government scheme was launched with assistance from the World Bank.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4: “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong opportunity for all”.
i.The proportion of young people Not in Employment, Education or Training
(the youth NEET rate) has remained high over the past 15 years. Women in NEET constituted around 30 per cent and men in NEET contributed around 13 per cent worldwide.
ii.It is estimated, the youth population will grow by more than 78 million between 2021 and 2030.
- It will adversely affect Low income countries and will account for nearly half of that increase.
Karnataka Skill Connect Portal was launched in Karnataka:
Karnataka’s Skill Development Ministry launched its Karnataka Skill Connect Portal (KSCP) on World Youth Skills Day.
- It is a digital platform which brings together academic institutions, various skilling agencies, potential workforce, and potential employers.
Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) will act as a knowledge bridge between the government and the industry and support the department of skill development with advisory and program management services to successfully build the KSCP platform.
