World Veterinary Day - April 29 2023World Veterinary Day (WVD) is annually observed across the globe on the last Saturday of the month of April to raise awareness about the veterinarians and their utmost devotion to animal health, welfare, and public health.

  • The day is celebrated to honour and recognise the efforts of veterinary professionals across the globe in augmenting animal health and welfare.

World Veterinary Day 2023 is observed on 29th April 2023. 

  • WVD 2022 was observed on 30th April 2022.
  • WVD 2024 will be observed on 27th April 2023.

The theme of World Veterinary Day 2023 is “Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in the Veterinary Profession”. 

The annual observance of World Veterinary Day is led by the World Veterinary Association (WVA), a federation of more than 80 veterinary medical associations representing over 500,000 veterinarians across the world on 6 continents.

Background:

i.World Veterinary Association (WVA) founded World Veterinary Day (WVD) on 29th April 2000.

ii.Since then, the last Saturday of April is annually observed as World Veterinary Day across the globe.

  • Every year the WVD is celebrated with a different theme which highlights the distinct aspect of veterinary medicine.

Significance of  Veterinarians:

Veterinarians are the only doctors who are professionally trained to safeguard the health of both animals and the populace.

They address the health and safety needs of every single species of animal.

They also play a major role in environmental protection, research, food safety, and public well-being.
