World Vegetarian Day is annually celebrated across the globe on October 1st to promote compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism. The day celebrates the benefits of being vegetarian.
The World Vegetarian Day initiates the month of October as the Vegetarian Awareness Month which concludes on 1st November, World Vegan Day.
Background:
In 1977 The North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) declared the October 1st of every year as World Vegetarian Day and later the day was endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978.
Vegetarianism:
i.Vegetarianism is a practice of not eating any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish, or by-products of animal slaughter.
ii.The diet of Vegetarians contains various levels of fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts, and seeds.
History:
i.The term Vegetarian was coined in the 19th Century before which vegetarianism was referred to as the Pythagorean Diet.
ii.Pythagoras, the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician was an advocate of the vegetarian diet therefore the diet was named after him.
