World Sports Journalists Day is annually observed across the globe on 2nd July to recognise the efforts and devotion of the sports journalists across the globe. The day also celebrates the achievements of the sports journalists.
The day is celebrated across the globe by the International Sports Press Association (Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive, AIPS).
The term ‘Sports journalism’ refers to the reports on sporting topics, one of the essential elements of news media organizations.
Background:
World Sports Journalists Day was established by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in 1994 to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of AIPS.
- AIPS was founded on July 2, 1924, during the Summer Olympics which was held in Paris, France.
Significance of APIS:
i.AIPS represents the international sports media with a total of 161 members National Sports Journalist Association(NSJA)’s from across Africa, America, Asia and Europe.
ii.The partners of the AIPS include the International Olympic Committee(IOC), Fédération Internationale de Football Association(FIFA), International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) among others.
iii.In 2014, AIPS became the very first Global Impact Partner of the Special Olympics.
