World Post Day 2022 - October 9United Nations(UN) World Post Day is annually observed across the globe on 9th October to mark the establishment of the Universal Postal Union(UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.

Purpose:

To create awareness about the importance of postal sector and its contribution to the social and economic development across the world.

  • The theme of World Post Day 2022 is “Post for Planet”.

Background:

The resolution C11/1969, adopted during the 1969 Tokyo Congress recommended to observe 9th October of every year, the anniversary of the foundation of the UPU as UPU Day.
Later it was decided to change the title UPU Day to “World Post Day”.

UPU’s International Letter-Writing Competition

The annual International Letter-Writing Competition(ILWC) organised by UPU since 1971 aims to promote literacy among children through the art of letter writing.
2022 ILWC marks the 51th ILWV event.
The 2022 theme of the competition is “Write a letter to an influential person about why and how to take action on climate change”.

About Universal Postal Union (UPU):

The Universal Postal Union (UPU), established in 1874, is the 2nd oldest international organization after International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
On 1st July 1948, UPU became a specialized agency of the UN.

Stamps:

A postage stamp is a small piece of paper issued by authorized vendors to customers who pay postage, the cost of moving, insuring, or registering mail.

UN Stamps:

UN is the only orgnisation in the world which is neither a country nor a territory that is permitted to issue postage stamps.
The 1st UN stamp was issued in on United Nations Day, 24th October 1951.
The UN stamps illustrates the aims and achievements of the UN and its family organisation.

India’s National Post Week 2022 – 9th to 13th October 2022

National Post Week is annually observed across India from 9th to 13th October to highlight the roles and activities of the India Post and the importance of postal services across India. India Post is the largest postal system in the world.

  • The observance of National Post Week is led by the Department of Post.

Events:

The Department of Post orgnaises various events and activities throughout the National Post Week to spread awareness about its role in India.

Observance during National Post Week 2022 – 9th to 13th October 2022: 

  • As part of the National Postal Week, the Department of Posts has celebrated the second of the week as Vittiya Shashakthikaran Diwas (Financial Empowerment Day) savings Bank, India Post Payment Bank and Postal Life Insurance for the financial empowerment of the common man.
  • 11th October 2022 – ‘Philately Day’: Celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Release of 9 Special Covers on the theme ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP).
  • 12th October 2022 – ‘Mails and Parcel Day’ – A Special Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Postmark cancellation will be done on all categories of inbound and outbound mail till 15th August 2023. Customer meetings will be organised for bulk customers to inform them about the new initiative taken under Parcel Tracker.
  • 13th October 2022 – ‘Antyodya Diwas’ – This will be celebrated to commemorate the contribution of the Department of Posts in the lives of the common man. Awareness cum Aadhar enrolment and updation camps will be organised in rural/remote areas and urban slums.
