World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2025 India tops medal tally with 134 medalsIndia concluded the 2025 World Para Athletics Grand Prix held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi (Delhi), securing the top spot on the medal table  with 134 medals, including 45 Gold, 40 Silver, and 49 Bronze.

  • The Neutral Para Athletes contingent finished 2nd with 26 medals, comprising 13 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze.
  • Uzbekistan claimed 3rd place with 4 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals.

About the 2025 World Para Athletics Grand Prix:

i.The 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix made history as India hosted its first-ever international para-athletics event.

ii.The competition, held from 11 to 13 March 2025, featured 150 Indian athletes competing across 90 events, with participation of  283 athletes representing 20 countries.

iii.Top nations, including Germany, Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

Note: The World Para Athletics Grand Prix will be an annual event in India until 2028, as confirmed by the World Para Athletics Federation.

Highlights:

i.Indian Para Javelin Thrower Rinku Hooda clinched a gold medal in the javelin throw F46 category with a throw of 60.26 meters (m).

  • This victory followed his recent success at the 22nd National Para Athletics Championships 2024 and a silver at the Asian Para Games 2022.
  • He outperformed Sri Lanka’s Gamini Ketawala (56.88m) and Uzbekistan’s Elyorbek Elmatov (43.01m).

ii.Indian Para Athlete Sagar Thayat clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Shot Put F11–F20 category with a throw of 11.47 m, followed by Janka Singh (silver) with a 9.91m throw, and Balaji Rajendran Harsana (bronze) with a 9.89m throw.

iii.Indian para athlete Preeti Pal earned a silver medal in the women’s 100m (T35, T36, T38, T44) with a time of 14.85 seconds (s).

  • She also added a bronze in the 200m (T35–T38) event, contributing to India’s leading medal tally of 134.

iv.Suchitra Parida, a para-athlete from Odisha, clinched the gold medal in the Women’s F-55 Javelin Throw with a throw of 15.93 m.

  • She outperformed Kazakhstan’s Viktoriya Vorobey (14.64m) and India’s Pooja (13.81m), securing the top position on the podium.

India’s Dominance in Field Events:

i.In the Women’s Discus throw F56–F57 Para Athletes Fatima, Suman Bala, and Asha Jalandar secured gold, silver, and bronze, respectively.

ii.Bhavani Munniyandi (India) added another bronze in the Women’s Long Jump T38, T44, T61, as Vanessa Low (Australia) claimed the gold.

iii.India’s sprinters Vinay won silver in the men’s 200m T35, while Abhishek Babasaheb Jadhav secured bronze respectively with 29.58 seconds and 31.55 seconds

iv.In the Men’s 5000m T11–T12, Para Athletes Sharath Shankarappa won gold, Saurabh Sharma secured silver, and Ankur Dhama won bronze respectively.
