The United Nations(UN)’s World Creativity and Innovation Day is annually observed across the globe on 21st April to create awareness about the importance of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development.
Background:
i.People and organisations of more than 50 countries across the globe commemorate the 21st April of every year as ‘World Creativity and Innovation Day’. The day was first commemorated on 21 April 2002.
ii.The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/71/284 on 27th April 2017 and proclaimed the 21st April of every year as the World Creativity and Innovation Day.
- The first UN-recognised ‘World Creativity and Innovation Day’ was observed on 21st April 2018.
Significance:
i.The World Creativity and Innovation Day offers a platform to embrace the idea that innovation is essential for harnessing the economic potential of nations.
ii.It also signifies that Innovation, creativity and mass entrepreneurship provide new momentum towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Importance of creativity and innovation:
i.Creativity and innovation can harness economic growth and job creation, and expand the opportunities for everyone, including women and youth.
ii.Culture and creativity account for 3.1% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 6.2% of all employment.
iii.According to the UN, Exports of cultural goods and services doubled in value from 2005 to reach USD 389.1 billion in 2019.
World Creativity and Innovation Week 2023 – 15 to 21st April
i.World Creativity and Innovation Week(WCIW) is annually observed across the globe from 15th to 21st April, since 2001, to encourage and enable new thinking to create new futures.
ii.The observance begins on 15th April which marks the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci(1452- 2nd May 1519) and ends on 21st April World Creativity and Innovation Day.
- The WCIW 2023 was observed from 15th to 21st April 2023.
