Significance: September 2 marking the foundation day of the International Coconut Community (ICC), an intergovernmental organization of coconut-growing countries established in 1969 under the aegis of UNESCAP. India is one of the founding members of the ICC.

Coconut: It is the fruit of the coconut palm (Cocos Nucifera), one of the most widespread and economically important palms.
Origin: Coconut palms are native to coastal regions of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, but are now cultivated across the tropics, including the Caribbean, Central America, Africa, and the Pacific Islands.

Top Global Producers (2025):The leading coconut-producing countries are Indonesia, the Philippines, and India.

India’s Contribution: India remains one of the largest producers of coconuts, contributing around 31% of global production in 2025.

Top Coconut-Producing States in India (2023-24):The leading coconut-producing states were Karnataka, Tamil Nadu(TN), Kerala, Andhra Pradesh(AP), and West Bengal(WB).
 2025 Events:

Event: On September 2, 2025, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare(MoAFW)  virtually inaugurated the national-level World Coconut Day celebrations organized by the Coconut Development Board (CDB) at Angamaly, Kerala.

Scheme: He launched the revised CDB schemes covering cultivation, processing, value addition, marketing, and exports.

Award: The Export Excellence Awards were presented to outstanding coconut exporters, and new CDB publications were released.
