World Archery Championships 2023: India won Gold for the 1st time & Topped Medal Tally with 4 medals

World Archery Championships GermanyIndia topped the medal tally with 4 medals(3 gold and 1 bronze) at the 52nd edition of the Hyundai World Archery Championships 2023, held in the Berlin Olympic Park in Berlin, Germany from 31st July to 6th August 2023.

  • India won the gold medal for the first time since its 1st edition that held in 1931.
  • South Korea secured 2nd position in the medal tally with 3 medals(2 gold and 1 bronze) followed by Germany,Poland and Türkiye in 3rd position each with 2 medals (1 gold and 1 silver).
  • This event marks the first major qualifier event in archery for the 2024 Paris Olympic.

India’s first-ever gold medal in World Archery Championships:

i.The Indian women’s compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur won the gold medal beating Mexico in the final.

  • This marks India’s first-ever gold medal in the World Archery Championships.

ii.Jyothi Surekha Vennam also won the bronze medal at the women’s individual compound event defeating Ipek Tomruk of Türkiye.

Aditi Gopichand Swami -Youngest world champion:

i.Aditi Gopichand Swami(aged 17) became the world champion by winning the gold medal in the women’s compound event defeating Andrea Becerra of Mexico.

ii.She also became the youngest archer to win an individual event at the senior world championships.

iii.Previously She won the Under-18 compound world title at the Youth World Championships in Limerick, Ireland in July 2023.

Ojas Pravin Deotale – World champion in men’s compound:

i.Ojas Pravin Deotale(aged 21)won the gold medal(world champion) in the men’s individual compound event defeating Lukasz Przybylski of Poland.

In the semi-finals,Ojas(world rank 9 in compound men) defeated Mike Schloesser(World rank 1) of the Netherlands.

ii.He became the first Indian male archer to win a gold medal at the world championships.

Note:

Previously,India won a total of 3 silver medals at the World Archery Championships 2021 in Yankton, South Dakota, The United States of America(USA).

i.The World Archery Championships are a series of competitions in Archery organised by the World Archery Federation (WA).

ii.The biennial event was organized for the first time in the year 1931.

iii.India made its debut in the World Archery Championship in 1981, Italy.

  • Upto 2021 edition, India had won a total of 11 medals(9 silver and 2 bronze)
