Women's Entrepreneurship DayThe Women’s Entrepreneurship Day(WED) is annually observed across the globe on 19th November to celebrate, empower and support the Women Entrepreneurs in business across the globe. The day highlights the achievements of Women Entrepreneurs and focuses on the challenges they face. The WED was first observed in 2013.

The day is organised by the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization(WEDO) or #ChooseWomen founded by Wendy Diamond, recipient of Ellis Island Medal of Honour.

Aim:

  • To create awareness about the 250 million Women and girls living in poverty, who deserve the opportunities in life.
  • To inspire and empower the 4 billion women across the globe.

Virtual Summit 2020:

As a part of the WED celebration WEDO organised the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day virtual summit 2020.

The speakers of the summit includes, Wendy Diamond, CEO and Founder of WEDO, Satya Tripathi, Assistant Secretary-General of United Nations(UN), Janki Lalani, Managing Director of Goldman Sachs,Pennelope Beckles, Chairwoman of UN Women

Key Points:

i.In the median Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, the gender gap in the labour force participation is around 14%, for median middle income countries it is around 26% and 13% for median low income countries.

ii.It is estimated that closing the gender gap will add a 28 trillion USD to the global Gross domestic product (GDP).

Efforts of United Nations Development Programme(UNDP):

i.In more than 46 countries, UNDP has prioritised gender responsive social protection and women’s economic recovery which includes micro, small, and medium enterprises(MSME), digital solutions, and cooperative development.

ii.According to the COVID-19 global Gender tracker of the UNDP, around 130 countries have adopted 504 fiscal and economic measures to support business to survive the pandemic and around 10% of these measures were aimed to strengthen women economic security by directing the resources to female dominated sectors.
