The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has announced the winners of the India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) organised under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM), MoHUA.
- Indore topped the National Smart City Award, followed by Surat and Agra in second and third place respectively.
- Madhya Pradesh topped the state award, followed by Tamil Nadu in second place, and Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in third place.
- Chandigarh has awarded best Union Territory award.
Note: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, will felicitate the winners of ISAC 2022 awards on 27th September 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Key Points:
i.In the Project Awards category, Coimbatore took the top spot for built environment, Ahmedabad for the culture and Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) themes, Jabalpur for economy, Chandigarh for governance and mobility, Indore for sanitation, water and urban environment, Vadodara for social aspects.
ii.Hubbali Dharwad for the innovative idea theme and Surat for Covid innovation theme.
About ISAC Awards:
i.The 4th edition of the ISAC was launched in April 2022 during the ‘Smart Cities-Smart Urbanization’ event in Surat, Gujarat.
- Previous ISAC editions were held in 2018, 2019, and 2020, with the exception of the 2021 edition, which was cancelled due to COVID-19.
ii.The ISAC recognizes and reward the cities, projects and innovative ideas that are promoting sustainable development across the 100 smart cities, as well as stimulating inclusive, equitable, safe, healthy and collaborative cities, thus enhancing quality of life for all.
Selection Procedure:
i.The ISAC 2022 award had a two-stage submission process consisting of ‘Qualifying Stage’, which involved overall assessment of the city’s performance, and the ‘Proposal Stage’
- A total of 64 awards were given in six categories including National and Zonal City Awards, State Awards, UT Award, Partners Awards(3 different themes), Innovation Award(2 different themes) and Project Awards(10 different themes).
ii.ISAC 2022 were received 845 nominations from 80 qualifying smart cities.These nominations were evaluated in 5 stages.
iii.During the five stages of the evaluation, the top 12 proposals from each award category were identified by a jury of the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).
- The final top 3 proposals have been identified for each award category by the Apex Committee of the Smart Cities Mission from the top 6 proposals.

About Smart Cities Mission(SCM):
i.The Smart Cities Mission was launched on June 25, 2015, aims to provide basic infrastructure, a clean and sustainable environment, and a good quality of life to their residents through the use of’smart solutions’.
ii.The 100 Smart Cities have taken up projects across diverse sectors including mobility, energy, water, sanitation, solid waste management, vibrant public spaces, social infrastructure, smart governance.
- Under the SCM, the Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCC) is operating in all 100 Smart Cities.
iii.6,041(76%) of the total proposed projects under SCM have been completed, and the remaining 1,894 projects worth 60,095 crore will be finished by 30 June 2024.
