WhatsApp Partnered with CyberPeace Foundation to Create Awareness about Cyber Safety Among Students

WhatsApp,-CyberPeace-Foundation-jointly-unveil-online-safety-programme-for-children,-educatorsIn order to create awareness on cyber safety among students, WhatsApp Inc.(WhatsApp) and CyberPeace Foundation have entered into a partnership. The partnership targets to reach about 15,000 students in 5 Indian states namely, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra by the end of 2020 under the first phase of a pan-India programme.

  • This initiative is built on a previous partnership under the ‘e-Raksha’ programme, which has reached many students.

Points to be Noted

Training 

To enhance online safety for children, CyberPeace Foundation in consultation with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and state police authorities will provide training to teachers, parents and students by using a curriculum co-created by Whatsapp and CyberPeace Foundation.

Establish ‘CyberPeace Club’ 

The participants, at the end of these training sessions will establish a ‘CyberPeace Club’ to create a ‘repository’ of guidance that other students can refer to increase online child safety.

Curriculum

The curriculum focuses on developmental skills and provides consultations with education boards, and governments at the state and national level. 

Key Point

The initiative, apart from creating awareness on cyber safety, is expected to improve the education system in India against cyberattacks.

i.The educational partnership is part of WhatsApp’s multi-year campaign on safety, which focuses on digital literacy and creating awareness. 

ii.In an effort to protect and promote child rights, Whatsapp intends to engage with key organisations like National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) , UNICEF and Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD)
