On 3rd December 2019, Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India presents Uttar Pradesh (UP) the National award for Excellence for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs,Divyangjan) on behalf of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The award was received by Mahesh Kumar Gupta, additional Chief Secretary of UP on behalf of the State Government. The event was organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disability (DEPwD).Key Points:
i.Other honourees in the occasion include Thawar Chand Gehlot, Union Minister for social justice and empowerment, Krishnapal Gurjar, Union Minister of state for social justice and empowerment, public representatives, Ramdas Athawale, Ratanlal Kataria and senior officers of the ministry were also present.
ii.UP has received the award for the implementation of Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, the campaign was launched in the year 2014-2015 to provide attainable physical infrastructure and other communication facilities to PwDs. The state has also made most of the public buildings disabled-friendly in the past three years and has also installed the use of screen-reader and voice recognition usage in the Sugamya website for visually challenged people.
iii. Best District in providing rehablitation service was conferred upon Dharmapuri District, Tamil Nadu, Ujjain District, Madhya Pradesh, and Varanasi District, Uttar Pradesh.

About National award for Excellence for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities 2019 (PwDs,Divyangjan):
i.The award was given under 14 categories for Individuals, Institutions, Organizations, State/District etc, for their outstanding achievements and work done towards empowerment of PwDs.
ii.The award was given on the occasion of the International Day of Person with Disabilities (IDPD) on 3rd December 2019.
iii. There were about 850 applications out of which 65 persons were given the National award by the Vice President of India.
