The Government of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under the Scheme Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) with the State of Uttar Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL).

Key Highlights about UDAY Scheme

  • It aims to supply adequate power at affordable rates and to ensure a sustainable permanent solution of electricity problem.
  • Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have already signed the MoU under UDAY. Now Uttar Pradesh has joined the list.
  • UDAY will help the UP government in improving their financial system.
  • The State Government and the DISCOMs makes efforts to improve the operational efficiency of the DISCOMs, and thus reducing the cost of power supply.
  • The Central government will provide enticement to the State Government and to the DISCOMs for improving the infrastructure of Power in the State and to help in lowering the cost of power.
  • In the UDAY Scheme Uttar Pradesh will obtain an overall net benefit of approximately Rs.33000 crore, by savings in interest cost, reduction in AT&C and transmission losses, interventions in energy efficiency and coal reforms during the period of spin.
  • Efficient use of Energy is also one of the main focus areas of UDAY
  • The DISCOMs will encourage the use of energy-efficient LED bulbs, agricultural pumps, fans & air-conditioners, efficient industrial equipment through Perform, Achieve, and Trade (PAT).
  • The scheme will provide quick availability of power to approx 490 villages and 143.54 lakh households in Uttar Pradesh
  • 24×7 Availability of power will boost the economy and promote industries by improving employment opportunities in the state
