United Nations Day 2025 – October 24

The United Nations (UN) Day is annually observed across the globe on 24th October to mark the anniversary of the day on which the UN Charter entered into force in 1945

UNGA Resolution: On October 31, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/168(II), officially designating October 24 of each year as UN Day.

About UN Charter :

Signing & Enforcement: Signed on 26 June 1945 at the UN Conference on International Organization (UNCIO) in San Francisco(the United States of America, USA) by 50 nations and came into force on 24 October 1945.

Origin of Name: The term “United Nations (UN)” first appeared in the Declaration by the UN on 1 January 1942, Washington, DC(USA), during the 2nd World War(WWII).

  • It was suggested by Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd USA President.

Symbols of the UN:

UN Emblem: Created in 1945 by Oliver Lincoln Lundquist during UNCIO, it shows a world map centered on the North Pole, encircled by a gold olive wreath on a smoke-blue field. The UN blue symbolizes peace.

UN Flag: Adopted by the UNGA on 20 October 1947 (Resolution A/RES/167 (II)), it features the UN emblem on a light blue background.

2025 Events:

Germany: On October 24, 2025, Dresden City Hall in Germany hosted a commemorative event with the theme  “Education Shapes the Future”, highlighting gender disparities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and exploring their global implications.

USA: International House Davis will host a community-focused event themed “Building Our Future Together”, featuring presentations by UC Davis Global Affairs SDG interns and an SDG-inspired art showcase, fostering dialogue, creativity, and community engagement.

Union Minister Jaishankar Releases postage stamp on UN’s 80th anniversary:

On 24 October 2025, Union Minister S. Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs(MEA), formally released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN at an event jointly organised by the MEA and India Post under the Ministry of Communication in New Delhi, Delhi.

Competition: The commemorative stamp emerged from a nationwide student contest that received nearly 7.4 lakh entries from across India.

  • The winning design by Shrestha Majumdar will feature on the stamp, while Anshika Jain and Rollie Sharma’s designs will appear on the First Day Cover and brochure.

Theme : The theme of the stamp highlights global peace, cooperation, and India’s role in multilateralism, reflecting the spirit of the motto “Building Our Future Together.”
